Tiananmen Square is a city square in the centre of Beijing, China, named after the Tiananmen (Gate of Heavenly Peace) located to its north, separating it from the Forbidden City. The square contains the Monument to the People's Heroes, the Great Hall of the People, the National Museum of China, and the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong.

The Forbidden City is a palace complex in central Beijing, China. The former Chinese imperial palace from the Ming dynasty to the end of the Qing dynasty (the years 1420 to 1912), it now houses the Palace Museum. The Forbidden City served as the home of emperors and their households as well as the ceremonial and political center of Chinese government for almost 500 years.
-Jingshan Park
Jingshan Park is an imperial park covering 23 hectares immediately north of the Forbidden City in the Imperial City area of Beijing, China. The focal point is the artificial hill Jingshan, literally Prospect Hill.
-Wangfujing Street
Wangfujing (Chinese: 王府井; pinyin: Wángfǔjǐng; literally: Prince's Mansion Well) is one of the most famous shopping streets of Beijing, China, located in Dongcheng District. The majority of the main area is pedestrianised and very popular shopping place for both tourists and residents of the capital. Since the middle of the Ming Dynasty there have been commercial activities in this place.

The #city #trip #Beijing was part of our #China #Tour in October 2016. Please find the summary of the China Tour here:
We arrived in Beijing by plain in the afternoon and walked to the Tiananmen Square, one of the largest squares in the world. The #Tiananmen Square is really impressive. The Tiananmen Square is named after the Tiananmen (Gate of Heavenly Peace).
The next day we visited the Temple of Heaven Park. In the park the #Chinese people were dancing, sporting and playing cards or other games. Maybe it was nicer to see these active Chinese people than the Temple of Heaven itself.
After lunch we travelled by subway to the Forbidden City in the center of Beijing. The Forbidden City was the Chinese imperial palace in the Ming and Qing dynasties (1420-1912). These days the Forbidden City was forbidden for everybody who was not part or not working for the imperial family.
Of course we have eaten the Peking Duck (Beijing Roast Duck) for dinner.
After 2 days hiking on the Great Wall of China (see we continued the Beijing trip with a visit of the Summer Palace. The emperors went to the Summer Palace to escape from the crowded city and. Now there are more than 200.000 visitors a day.
We left Beijing by night train.

The living conditions here in the past were very bad, very cold in winter and very hot in summer, a lot of flies and mosquitoes, but not enough water. Everybody had to go to the same public toilet. Whenever it rained, the courtyard became very muddy, very dirty and a disorderly environment.

Of course we want to have Beijing more beautiful for the 2008 Olympics and welcome our friends from all over the world to come here with our warm hearts and tidy environment. However, our work is not just for the Olympics. We put the interests of our citizens first by cleaning the environment, repairing or reconstructing those old and dangerous houses. The living conditions were extremely bad for people who used to live here (near the wall).

Many residential compounds and buildings have been constructed on the outskirts of Beijing city. Our plan is to gradually move people from the city to there so that the population in the old living area in the city centre can be reduced. Then we will have better conditions to reconstruct our city. The reconstruction work of those old courtyard houses will be in accordance with the original appearance so that the traditional style of the constructions can be copied as it was in the past.

STORYLINE:
This park might not be the best in the Chinese capital, but it's a firm favourite with 48-year-old Beijing driver, Bai Wenchun.
Bai often walks through the park and stands where his bed used to be. For 44 years he lived by this old wall, before being moved out last July.
The old wall is an historical treasure and was used as part of Beijing's city defence in China's Ming Dynasty (1368-1645). But after more than 600 years, the wall has been seriously damaged by erosion and settlement.
In late 1950s some people started building their simple houses against the wall and gradually it became a residential area, with 2-thousand-600 families living here.
For many years, Beijing authorities have faced the difficult task of removing residents from these protected sites and resettling them elsewhere. The conditions in these crowded living areas were often no better than those refugee camps.
Beijing authorities began redeveloping the city after it announced its bid for the 2008 Olympics. A lot of Hutongs (alleys) and their houses were destroyed to make way for roads and new developments.

The Temple of Heaven and Tiantan Park are located in southern Dongcheng District and it's possible to enter from 4 gates (East, West, North and South Gates).
The through ticket cost 34 CNY and it included the 3 scenic spots: the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, the Echo Wall and the Circular Mound Altar.
The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is a circular building and it was built on three levels of marble stone. It's where the Emperor prayed for the good harvests.
The Echo Wall has a perimeter of 193 meters. The wall is flat and it allows the sound waves to pass smoothly. If there are two people standing at the opposite side of the wall and one person whispers some words, the other one will be able to hear it.
The Circular Mound Altar is a circular stone altar. Every year on the day of the winter solstice during the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1911) the emperors would offer sacrifice to Heaven.

9 Dragon-Wall inside the Forbidden City - Beijing - China
This video shows you one of the 3 9 dragons walls that are left over in China. This one is located in the special area within the Forbidden City and it will cost you an additional 10 Yuan fee to get to that part. See the location for the exact place of this wall. This Nine-Dragon Wall was built in 1772 (the 38th year of Emperor Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty), when the palace Ningshou gong was converted. It's 67 feet long and 11.5 feet tall. That's 29.4 meters long, 3.5 meters high & 0.45 meter thick. In terms of its artistic value and architectural design, nothing better exists than this. Though this Nine-Dragon Wall is nothing but a screen wall, it fully demonstrates the magnificence of the Forbidden City, as well as the pride and honor of the imperial family. Ordinary people’s screen walls were generally built with bricks, but the Nine-Dragon Wall used colored glaze. What's most striking and magnificent about the wall is the nine dragons. In Chinese culture, dragons signify a supreme status, and are an extraordinary mascot. That’s why emperors in ancient times often referred to themselves as a true dragon, and a son of heaven. Only emperors were qualified wear robes with dragon-shaped designs, and use the anything with paintings of dragons. The other 2 existing 9 dragon-walls can be seen in Datong, in the Shanxi province, 800 miles away, and in the Beijing Beihai Park.
