ALASKA DAY IN SITKA - 2018
Is was in Sitka that Russia transferred the territory of Alaska into the hands of the USA on October 18th, 1867. Here that event is commemorated and celebrated in a variety of ways, including but not limited to, a smoked salmon competition, a memorial service, a pie sale, a parade, a SAR (Search and Rescue) Demonstration, a brew fest with Baranof Island Brewing Company, and a bag piper performance all of which took place on Alaska Day 2018 and were captured in this video. Enjoy!

Totem Park | Sitka National Historical Park, Alaska
If you only have a short time in Sitka, Alaska, I highly suggest taking a FREE walk through Totem Park. It's an easy 1-mile loop with breathtaking views of a volcano and gorgeous Alaskan landscapes, and you learn about Tlingit and Haida native culture through all the totem poles and informative signs. I also recommend spending some time in the visitor center (also free) where you can learn even more and see totem poles being carved!
This is one of the top things to do in Sitka. If you'd like to see more things to do in Sitka, check out this video:

Our Gear:
Canon G7X Mark II: (it’s amazing and basically sees in the dark)
Canon G7X: (the original is almost as good, but less expensive)
Joby Gorillapod: (fantastic versatile bendy tripod – this is the slightly smaller “action” version that’s easier to travel with and comes with a mount for a camera and a gopro)
Macbook Air: (we edit everything on Final Cut Pro on a Macbook Air, which is light and easy to travel with)
External Hard Drive: (the videos are a little too big for the macbook air to handle, so I edit everything off an external hard drive)

Walking in Sitka, Alaska - What to Do on Your Day in Port
This is a quick video of our port call in Sitka, Alaska. The City and Borough of Sitka (Tlingit: Sheetʼká, Russian: Ситка), formerly Novo-Arkhangelsk, or New Archangel under Russian rule, is a unified city-borough on Baranof Island and the south half of Chichagof Island. The Russians settled Old Sitka in 1799, calling it Fort Saint Michael.
In terms of land area, it is the largest city-borough in the U.S., with a land area of 2,870.3 square miles (7,434 square kilometres) and a total area (including water area) of 4,811.4 square miles (12,461 square kilometres).
It rained the whole time we were there. We walked to the Sitka National Historic Park. It has a lot of tall totem poles. We saw several Bald Eagles but not much other wildlife.

Sitka, AK - Climbing & Exploring Harbor Mt. (july 2015)
Took a short journey with my brother to the top of Harbor Mt. in Sitka, AK! This was about a 3 hour hike. We drove between 4.5 - 4.6 miles to the parking lot and from there a mile to the top of the mountain. The trail is beautifully designed and well maintained. As we got closer to the top of the peak the trail got narrower and steeper, but nothing was too complicating or impossible. Anyone can climb it! Harbor Mt. is a perfect location for anyone who wants to take a full glance at Sitka and the mountains behind. Thank you for watching!

Backing music by Nuertful , a version of 'One Directions' - ''They Don't Know About Us'' Nuetful has a great channel on Youtube . You can more of his music there. The journey to Sitka alaska is like no other port I can think of for sheer grandeaur , before you arrive to the beautiful Sitka, sailing in the footsteps of Captain Cook . Cruising through Alaska’s Inside Passage and passing close to the extinct volcano of Mount Edgecumbe named by Captain Cook in 1778. An unexpected benefit of Alaska Cruise For Dummies, Sitka faces the Gulf of Alaska, and is on Baronof Island .
Sitka , Alaska .One of the highlights of an Alaska Cruise , Sitka once the capital of Russian America and formerly known as New Archangel while under Russian Rule.
Sitka Alaska was initially settled by the Tlingit Indians.
The Kiksadi Clan of the Tlingit Indians chose what is now called Baranof Island as their home, establishing a community at what is present-day Sitka. The Tlingits lived undisturbed until 1799, when Russian explorers arrived in Alaska and Alexander Baranof, Manager of the Russian-American Company, built a fort a few miles to the north. After a series of clashes, the Tlingits attacked and destroyed the Russian outpost in 1802. But Baranof retaliated and soon pushed the natives from the area. The Russians renamed the settlement New Archangel. The Russian Orthodox Church spread its influence into the area and built fortress-like structures on a hilltop overlooking the shoreline.
Rich wildlife resources in Alaska allowed the Russian-American Company to flourish - for a time it was the most profitable fur trader in the world. .
In 1867, the United States purchased Alaska from the Russians for $7.2 million. The transfer ceremony occurred in Sitka Alaska . Today, the Sitka culture is a blend of Tlingit, Russian and American. Certainly a unexpected benefit of Alaska Cruises, and no of Alaska Cruise Holiday for Dummies.
