Nothing screams spring like a day trip to the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival in April. This month-long celebration has miles of tulip farms to explore.
In this video you can watch the tulip fields as the crops of RoozenGaarde/Washington Bulb Co., Inc. and Tulip Town. The fields are different each year due to crop rotation. Both RoozenGaarde and Tulip Town also have displays of tulips in gardens for visitors to view and photograph. The fields are generally not for “picking,” just admiring and taking pictures. Often there are paths around the fields, but generally they don’t want you walking in the rows of flowers, as the bulbs are fragile. Tulips are usually for sale at the entrances, so you can take some home.
Getting There
It’s easy to get to the Skagit Valley. Travel north on I-5 for approximately 60 miles. The tulips are generally grown in a 15-mile triangle bordered by Highway 20, the Skagit River, and the Swinish River Channel.

RoozenGaarde has a colorful 4-acre display garden with over 250,000 bulbs and an authentic Dutch windmill. Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for military with I.D., children ages 5 and under are free; parking is free with admission. RoozenGaarde is open daily from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Sorry, no pets permitted in the garden.

Check out the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival & Seattle Cherry Blossom Festival with us! Today, we're going to check out this festival and all the history surrounding it, then we'll head back down to Seattle and we'll be checking out the cherry blossom trees at the Washington Arboretum Park and also the University of Washington quad. Like much of Washington's population, the cherry trees and tulips aren't native to this state. Nevertheless, they've both become cultural staples of the region and continue to grow every year. There's a lot to see so let's get started.
Now we're in Tulip Town, it's one of the main attractions for the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. One of the most striking sights here at Tulip Town is this windmill right here and this windmill is a result of the owner of Tulip Town, his name is Tom De Goede, and in 2003 he visited his family's home in Holland. This windmill is an exact replica of his family's windmill in Holland.
How did a festival like this end up in Skagit, Washington of all places? Well, in 1893 an English immigrant named George Gibbs bought $5 worth of tulip bulbs and he planted them on Orcas Island. A couple of years after he planted them, he dug them up and realized the massive potential for tulip bulbs in the Pacific Northwest region.
In 1899, Gibbs contacted the United States Government about growing tulip bulbs in the area and the U.S. Government said okay, we're interested, so in 1905 they shipped him 15,000 bulbs directly from Holland and that experiment was so successful that the U.S. Government set up their own 10 acre parcel in Bellingham strictly to grow tulip bulbs.
The Bellingham Tulip Festival ran from about 1920 to 1930. The Great Depression came along and kind of stopped the festival, so what the growers did is they moved from Bellingham further down to here in Skagit where we have the festival now.
For many years local growers displayed their tulip bulbs in showcase gardens and then in 1984 the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce established the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. Initially, it was a three-day festival and now it's kind of morphed into a month-long event where you got sporting events, a street fair, and you've got art displays throughout the area.
We're here now at Roozen Garden, a famous flower and bulb shop and also one of the major sponsors of the tulip festival here in Skagit, Washington. Roozen Garden was started by the Roozen family and the Washington Bulb Company in 1985. Their business of selling tulips, irises, and a number of other flowers is the largest of its kind in the world. Fresh cut flowers are available for purchase or for shipment anywhere in the United States year round. Roozen Garden is truly one of a kind and much more than a simple flower shop.
We are now heading back into Seattle and we are going to check out the Washington Park Arboretum and the cherry blossom trees, see if they're blossoming there. We are in Seattle's Washington Arboretum Park and behind me, you can see a nicely blooming cherry blossom, so how did these cherry blossom trees get to Seattle? How did they get to the state of Washington? They are not a native plant to here.
Well, in 1912 the Mayor of Tokyo, Japan gifted 34 cherry blossom trees to Washington. He also gifted a number to other states but Washington got 34 and originally those 34 were planted right here in Washington Park Arboretum. Then in the 1960s, 31 of those trees were moved to the Quad and moved to the University of Washington that we'll take a look at in this sequence also, but this is kind of where it all started.
Throughout the park, there are these cool descriptive plaques that give you a little bit of the history of how the trees got here and just the history of the botanical gardens in general. If you're a fan of a little bit quieter area, not quite as crowded as the University's Quad, this is a great place to come.

The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival is a Tulip festival in the Skagit Valley of Washington state. It is held annually in the spring, April 1 to April 30.
Around 1883, George Gibbs, an immigrant from England moved to Orcas Island, where he began to grow apples and hazelnuts. Nine years later, he purchased five dollars worth of flower bulbs to grow, and when he dug them up a couple years later and saw how they had multiplied, realized the potential for bulb growing in the Puget Sound region. He contacted Dutch growers in Holland to learn about the business, only to find the Dutch to be highly secretive about their commercial practices. However, when he shipped off a few a bulbs to Holland, the impressed Dutch growers traveled to Orcas Island to see for themselves how tulips could grow outside Holland.
In 1899, Gibbs wrote to the United States Department of Agriculture regarding the commercial prospects of bulb growing in the region, and they took interest. In 1905, they sent Gibbs 15,000 imported bulbs from Holland to grow as an experiment, under a contract. The experiment was so successful that the United States Department of Agriculture established their own 10-acre test garden around Bellingham in 1908, which proved successful enough for the Bellingham Tulip Festival to begin in 1920 to showcase and celebrate the success of the bulb industry.
The Bellingham Tulip Festival was discontinued in 1930, due to the Great Depression and bulb freezes in 1916, 1925, and 1929 that brought heavy losses to the growers. Subsequently, the growers moved south into Skagit County.[2]
In 1946, William Roozen arrived to the United States, leaving behind a successful bulb growing business spanning six generations in Holland. After working on several different farms, Roozen started his own in Skagit County in 1950, and in 1955 purchased the Washington Bulb Company, making him the leader among the four flower-growing families in the area, and the Washington Bulb Company the leading grower of tulip, daffodil, and iris bulbs in North America.[3] The farm operates a public display garden and gift shop called Roozengaarde,[4] which, alongside the DeGoede family's Tulip Town, is a major attraction during the Tulip Festival.[5]
Local tulip growers showcased their bulbs through display gardens for decades prior to the formation of an official festival. The Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce established the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival as a 3-day event in 1984 to add festivities during the bloom month.[6] The event has since grown to a month-long event and coincides with street fairs, art shows and sporting events.[7]

The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival is one of the destination events for the Pacific Northwest, held from April 1-30. Every spring hundreds of thousands of people come to enjoy the celebration of spring as millions of tulips burst into bloom. As with all things governed by Mother Nature, the tulips bloom according to their own schedule sometime during the festival. The tulips allow us to share our corner of the world and showcase Skagit Valley agriculture. We depend on a strong volunteer base to keep our office up and running and to put on our festival activities. This year Skagit Valley Senior Village has stepped up to sponsor our Volunteer program which logged nearly 1,400 hours in 2014.
Our festival is designed as a driving tour for the visitor as there is no one site that you go to for your visit. The fields of tulips are scattered throughout the Skagit Valley as are the many events and activities that comprise the festival. The tulip fields are the crops of RoozenGaarde/Washington Bulb Co., Inc. and Tulip Town and the fields are different each year due to crop rotation. Both RoozenGaarde and Tulip Town also have displays of tulips in gardens for visitors to view and photograph. We hope you enjoy taking in one of the many events and activities that happen only during April.
As the festival continues on its journey – now for 32 years – we welcome people from across the United States and from around the world. If you're planning to go see the rows of tulip fields, make sure you know what to expect during the festival, which officially starts April 1 and lasts all month. The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival always starts the first of April with the slogan “Bloom dates according to Mother Nature.” This year’s chilly winter means blooms are a bit later than in past years. That’s good news, according to Cindy Verge, executive director of the festival. “Cooler weather lets the tulips come up gradually, as they’re meant to. During the last few years’ warm winters, they grew too fast and were short and not as sturdy,” she said. “Growing slower makes them taller and stronger, and they should be in full bloom with perfect timing in the middle of April.”

This video is of the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival in 2015. We took a trip up to the Roozengaarde in March. Such a beautiful area that I had to bring along the selfie stick so I could get close up to the flowers. Keep in mind that I only had the selfie stick for a few days so I was still extremely awkward with it. So I kept in all of the awkward moments...lol. I did also get a few comments on the selfie stick which was cool.
Skagit Valley Tulip Festival Washington Welcomes Visitors With Amazing Colors And Millions Of Tulips
The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival Washington is an annual explosion of color that attracts visitors from all over Northwest Washington and British Columbia. The display of flowers is located west of Mount Vernon between Anacortes and Burlington Washington.
As you can see in the video there are fast fields of color to explore as well as a show garden loaded with a wide variety of Tulips as well as other flowers.
Ironically the Tulips are not planted for their flowers, it is the bulbs they are after. The bulbs are cultivated, harvested, and then sold online year round and around the world.
There are over 3,000 recognized variety of Tulips.
During the great Tulip Mania craze in the 1600's in Holland the value of some tulip bulbs was around $40,000, making many people very rich until the market crashed and a lot of people became very poor. Eventually the Dutch Government decided to void all contracts made during the Tulip Craze to help get their economy back on track.
The many lessons learned from the tulip craze have helped identify and avert similar market manias with other commodities.
The tulips generally bloom April 1st until Mid May. Be sure to check out the Tulip Festival for yourself.
