Chilkoot Lake Wildlife Viewing Tour to Haines - Skagway, Alaska
Your tour begins with a high-speed catamaran ride along the steep-walled fjords that connect Skagway to Haines. Over a dozen unnamed waterfalls drop hundreds of feet from both sides of the boat. Bald eagles and harbor seals are often seen on this journey.
Upon arrival in Haines, meet your expert naturalist guide for a drive to Chilkoot Lake State Park. This park has it all: a turquoise lake surrounded by snowy mountain peaks, a salmon-filled river flowing into the sea, and important Tlingit cultural sights. Bald eagles, harbor seals, and brown bears are often seen here.
May, June, and July feature wildflowers and eagles. Beginning in August, pink salmon - the smallest and most abundant of the Pacific salmon varieties - begin their run up the Chilkoot River to spawn. This is the best opportunity to see brown bear as they are often witnessed feeding along the banks of the river. When bears are present, every effort will be made to give you safe bear viewing.
As you drive through the park, your guide knows the best places to stop for scenery and the possibility of wildlife spotting. Your guide is equipped with a powerful spotting scope to bring the wildlife in close, and explain how the animals fit into the Chilkoot's complex ecosystem.
Your guide will select a scenic spot to enjoy a picnic lunch on your way back to Haines. Make sure you bring your camera to take advantage of the numerous photo opportunities.

RV in Alaska - Skagway
The last stop we will make in Alaska before heading back down to the lower 48 is in Skagway. This old mining town (gold rush of 1898) is now primarily a tourist attraction. It is a National Historic Park and well worth seeing. One of the main attractions is the White Pass and Yukon Railroad trip that takes you just into Canada to see the path that the miners had to take to get to the gold fields in the Klondike. Spectacular scenery along this narrow gauge railroad built in 1898. On cruise day the streets come alive with the throngs from as many as four cruise ships docked at once. Otherwise, it is a bucolic little town with its own special charm.
Port Overview - Skagway, Alaska
Birthplace of the Alaskan Gold Rush, Skagway is the starting point for the historic White Pass Railroad and is located just north of the massive glacier filled icefield.

Port of Call from the cruise ship Star Princess.
From the website:
The port of Skagway is a popular stop for cruise ships, and the tourist trade is a big part of the business of Skagway. The White Pass and Yukon Route narrow gauge railroad, part of the area's mining past, is now in operation purely for the tourist trade and runs throughout the summer months. Skagway is also part of the setting for Jack London's book The Call of the Wild, Will Hobbs's book Jason's Gold, and for Joe Haldeman's novel Guardian, moreover, John Wayne's film North to Alaska was filmed nearby.
Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve Rafting Tour to Haines - Skagway, Alaska
Your trip begins with a 45-minute ferry ride along the steep-walled fjords connecting Skagway to Haines. Over a dozen unnamed waterfalls drop hundreds of feet from the cliff sides on both sides of the boat. Marvel at the scenery and look for humpback whales, harbor seals, and bald eagles.
Upon arrival in Haines, meet your expert guide and enjoy a riverside drive along the Haines Highway. The drive is incredibly scenic: glacier-clad mountains thrust to the sky, colorful wildflowers line the road, green riverside channels provide habitat for moose, bear and trumpeter swans. The highway was declared a National Scenic Byway in 2009. Arrive at the river in the heart of the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, approximately 40 minutes away.
After boarding your raft, enjoy a scenic float down the Chilkat River through the famous Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, home of the world's largest concentration of Bald Eagles. You are immersed in the Alaskan wilderness, floating the silent river. As there are no rapids (white water) on the river, it makes for a very relaxing float. Depending on the flow of the river, the float portion lasts about 1 1/2 hours.
Along the way, your professional guide will explain the natural history of the area, Chilkat Indian Heritage, and share some exciting stories from life in the Alaskan wilderness. The number of eagles you will see is dependent on the food available to the eagles (i.e. the fish runs). During the early months of the summer season you will often see parent eagles sitting on nests, eaglets in nests and the parent eagles flying to the nest with food for their young. Thousands of bald eagles travel here to feed on salmon in the fall and winter. During very warm days, the eagles are often seen catching the thermals and soaring above the mountain peaks.
Paddling is not required, as your expert guide will push the raft along, explaining the intricate balance of nature that makes this a unique and special place. Don't leave your camera behind for this adventure!
After rafting, enjoy a picnic lunch on your way back to Haines. Board the Fast Ferry to Skagway and return to your ship with memories of an unforgettable adventure.

Starting off in Whitehorse, Yukon we drove through Haines Junction, Yukon, along the Haines Pass to Haines, Alaska. We camped at the Chilkoot State Park for night number one. The following day we rode through Haines on the bikes before hopping on the ferry to Skagway, Alaska. After setting up camp we rode around town a bit before enjoying dinner at the Skagway Brewing Co.
