Skaneateles Lake mansions get big tax breaks meant for farms
Two of Syracuse’s wealthiest and most savvy real estate developers use tax breaks meant for rural farmers to secure big property tax breaks at their Skaneateles Lake mansions.
Bob Congel, the developer behind Destiny USA, and Michael J. Falcone, the founder of Pioneer Companies, are taking some of the largest agricultural exemptions in New York state on their private family properties. That’s because they lease acres of land around their mansions to grow corn, hay and grapes.
An analysis by Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard shows how a state law intended to protect rural farms has been exploited by wealthy and savvy homeowners.

Skaneateles is a perfect place for a Finger Lakes getaway vacation, as my wife and I learned in the summer of 2014.
Skaneatles is pronounced variously as Skinny Atlas or Skanny Atlas. No matter what you call it, any place that has the most beautiful body of water in the world, William Seward, Harriet Tubman, feminist icons, septuagenarians true to their school, a beautiful place for you and your baby to get your swerve on, athletic horses, wonderful kind people, a visionary artist whose work keeps developing, abundant wildlife, and Doug's Fish Fry, is our kind of place.
As another Doug once put it, We shall return!

Some clips of the Skaneateles Majors from Hugh Major's home movies. Begins at a Major reunion, possibly Marcellus Park -- Uncle Bob and Uncle Bud and their families, and Aunt Lizzy and others unknown to me are there. Looks like the toddlers at the picnic really like beer. I dimly recall some sort of contest in which the kids were called on to entertain the adults -- Cousin Timmy won by putting on a girdle. I put in every clip I could find that shows Aunt Lizzy, including her on visits with us to see my brother Billy at Rome State School. Last dim shot of Lizzy (talking with others in front of her house) looks like it was taken when Hugh Major family visited her in summer of 1970, not long before before she died. First part narrated by me, second part is silent.

It’s June 2015 and Nancy and I have returned to Lake Skaneateles, rain or shine the most beautiful body of water in the world, where just about everyone and everything is nice. Even the insects that occasionally swarm about your head are neighborly and never bite. We had a marvelous time exploring the region, meeting new people and having many adventures. And miraculously, I managed to stay out of the Auburn Correctional Facility!
