ORF - Lange Nacht der Museen 2018 - Museum St. Anton am Arlberg
Eine landesweite Initiative ist alljährlich die Lange Nacht der Museen – auch das Ski- und Heimatmuseum in St. Anton öffnete seine Pforten.
In diesem Rahmen wurde unter anderem die Sonderausstellung anlässlich des bevorstehenden 80. Geburtstags von Karl Schranz eröffnet.
Die Ausstellung ist ein Zeichen des Dankes an St. Antons großen Sohn.
Der Jubilar selbst blickt bei der Ausstellungseröffnung auf Höhen und Tiefen seines Lebens zurück.
Auch sein Bruder erinnert sich an die gemeinsame Kindheit mit dem großen Bruder Karl Schranz.
Konzipiert wurde die Ausstellung von Christof Thöny in Zusammenarbeit mit Manuel Matt.
Im Rahmen der Langen Nacht der Museen wurde auch der neu konstituierte Museumsverein präsentiert.

St. Anton am Arlberg is an Austrian village in the Tyrolean Alps. It's known as a gateway to the Arlberg ski region and is often called the “cradle of alpine skiing” for its role in inventing the sport. The Museum St. Anton am Arlberg chronicles local ski history in a traditional chalet. Lifts and cable cars provide access to the slopes of Valluga and Rendl. A network of mountain trails branches out from the town.

St Anton, Austria Is A Winter Paradise
Austria’s Arlberg region is home to St. Anton, which is in the Tyrolean Alps. St. Anton is a quaint village that's filled with Tyrolean style architecture housing chic hotels, nearly 100 restaurants, and some 20 different bars serving locally distilled schnapps for après sessions.
This area is considered the birthplace of alpine skiing, the après ski scene and is also where Europe's first cable car was built.The resort is quick to stay up to speed too, with the recent opening of the futuristic Galzig gondola, with a transparent shell that shows the ferris wheel type system.
When it comes to skiing, St Anton boasts more than 170 miles of marked trails and more than 110 miles of backcountry trails. And With 320 snowmaking machines roaring, there is guaranteed snow from the beginning of December to April.
When it comes to terrain, this is not a mountain for beginners. More than half of the runs are for intermediate and expert skiers only, and even some of the reds (the equivalent of blues in the U.S.) may be too steep for less confident snow riders.
When it comes to food, the town is home to no less than 90 restaurants.
On the slopes, try Himmeleck, which Translates to “Heavens Edge” Look for delicious entrees and the classic Tyrolean soup which is best enjoyed from the massive sundeck outdoors.
Another favorite is the Hospiz Alm- which you can ski to or take a bus or drive to for diiner. Here, you don’t want to miss the wiener schnitzel or the Kaiserschmarrn for dessert- a caramelized pancake served with lingonberry jam. It’s served in a cast iron pan, and mixed with a liquor before it’s set to flame by staff donning bow ties and lederhosen. Make sure to check out the wine cellar here too- which has the world's largest private collection of Bordeaux and Burgundy varietals.
The Museum Restaurant was built as a home in 1912 and is filled with ornate details in an elegrant setting. The local book trout with almond butter, parsley potatoes and mixed green salad is what to order. Save time after to check out the museum upstairs which traces the history of skiing in the area.
For lodging, check out The Hotel Schwarzer Adler, a four-star hotel that was recently re-designed in an alpine boutique style. The bar on seating areas offer a place to wind down in a cozy social atmosphere.
Austria in Winter: Walking Around St. Anton am Arlberg
The Euro is still too high against the U.S. dollar for us to think of shopping but it was still fun to walk around the pedestrian only area, window shopping.
But, we could still afford to tank up daily on those wonderful, scrumptious, Austrian sweet rolls including my favorites. Cheese strudel (Topfenstrudel) and snail-shaped rolls filled with nuts, butter and cinnamon (schnecken). Yum, yum, yum.....
Austria in Winter: Top of The Galzig Bahn - St. Anton
The Galzig Bahn is a new state-of-the-art method of zooming to the top of the mountain. Loading from the bottom of St. Anton operates on a ferris wheel principle...get on and revolve to the top until the Galzig Bahn shoots straight up the mountain.
But the fun all takes place at the top. Fantastic cafeteria, restaurants, bars, lawn chairs to tan, music and even escalators between levels.

Appartements Kohlereck sells fast on our site. Overlooking the Arlberg Mountains and St. Anton, Appartements Kohlereck is a 15-minute walk from the village centre and the train station. The free ski and hiking bus stops right in front. Ski and boot storage, as well as a heater is available.
All apartments have a flat-screen cable TV, a kitchen or kitchenette, and a bathroom. Most have a balcony. On request, fresh bread rolls are delivered every morning.
Private parking, including a bicycle garage, is available free of charge at Kohlereck Appartements. In winter, a sauna and an infrared cabin can be used free of charge, while in summer they are available at a surcharge.
The Arl.Rock sports and adventure park can be reached in a 15-minute walk. In winter, ski passes can be bought on site. The ski bus takes guests to the Galzigbahn, Kapallbahn and Rendlbahn Cable Cars.
