Thy Will Be Done (Night 3) - The Homes in Ashes in the Shenandoah
This is the first presentation of three, given in Shepherdstown, WV at the Black Box Art Center, created and using diaries and writings of five families living in or near Jefferson County. The shared events and thoughts are moving, funny and powerful. The story begins in Shepherdstown in August, 1857 - through months and years of strife with the Civil War and continuing past the war to the end of the lives of those we introduce to you, showing the mark of the war years on their souls. It begins ironically and prophetically with a jousting ring tournament in front of Leeland on Route 480 with many participants who will soon be thrown into real battle, and some will die.
Researched and written and directed by Jim Surkamp. Terry Tucker composed, performed and arranged many pieces of relevant music. Her playing informs the dramatic readings of Homer Speaker, Ardyth Gilbertson and Jim Surkamp from these diaries, which have been fashioned into a unique moving overall narrative of some 135,000 words. The last fifteen minutes of the video is a detailed references and image credits section for scholars. This presentation seques right over to the next video call Thy Will Be done (Night 2). Thy Will Be Done (Night 3) will also be added in the next three weeks. We'll keep you posted.

It is entitled Thy Will Be Done capturing the sentiments of many and stated twice explicitly under great crisis by the dying Willie Lee in July. 1861 and later Tippie Boteler. If we call it The Best Civil War Story twice in the video please forgive us. We were all amazed and impressed by the extraordinary writing abilities of so many who also happened to have witnessed and experienced things that are really worth writing about AND whose lives - being friends - interwove, thus giving us a factual intact, compelling narrative. No, not just the figment of some Hollywood producer's addled brain. :)

A homeowner snapped this shot of Jimmie Cox diving into murky water to try and fix the problem. Inside Edition connected Cox with Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs, who commended the plumber for his dedication to his dirty job. A gunman killed himself after opening fire on a Florida school board meeting. He was confronted by two school officials, one who attacked him with her purse, and another, the security chief, who fired his gun at the shooter.
Police said a 56-year-old man disrupted the the Bay District School Board meeting in Panama City, Fla., walked up to the podium, pulled out a can of red spray paint and painted a large letter V with a circle around it.
The shooter approached the front of the board members, spray painted a symbol on the wall and fired an unknown amount of rounds, said Panama City Police Department spokesman Sgt. Jeff Becker.

Landscape Architecture in Latin America: Unpacking Theory, Practice, and Agency, Panel 1
Women in Design (WiD) and Latin GSD, in collaboration with the Department of Landscape Architecture, present “Landscape Architecture in Latin America: Unpacking Theory, Practice, and Agency.” This symposium will provide an opportunity to debate the current and future state of landscape architecture in Latin America.
Latin America is formed by a diverse set of territories, offering both challenges and opportunities to the landscape discipline. This symposium brings together professionals from several countries to discuss the complex social, political, and environmental realities engaged in their work. From the creation of ecological corridors in Bogota to urbanization in the Galapagos Islands, these designers interpret landscape through a range of lenses that include urbanism, architecture, ecology, and social engagement.
Speaking to the many interdisciplinary interests at the GSD, panelists will frame conversations around theory and practice, established firms and emerging voices, and the role of equity in design. What is the intersection of research and built work? How is the discipline taught and regulated? How does landscape translate to academia and public policy? By presenting the current state of landscape architecture in Latin America this symposium will provide a space for imagining its future possibilities.

Grand Central: How a Station Transformed America (Grand Central Publishing) is a rich and entertaining history of the iconic Grand Central Terminal just in time to celebrate the train station's 100th fabulous anniversary. In the winter of 1913, Grand Central Station was officially opened and immediately became one of the most beautiful and recognizable Manhattan landmarks.
In this celebration of the one hundred-year-old terminal, Sam Roberts of The New York Times looks back at Grand Central's conception and amazing history, as well as the far-reaching cultural effects of a station that continues to amaze tourists and shuttle busy commuters.
