On the Shoulders of Giants - Oklahoma City Skydance Bridge Premiere
Composed in collaboration for the Oklahoma City Skydance Bridge, On the Shoulders of Giants, is a work between Mathew Campbell and Amanda Miller (lighting designer) about the Pillars of Creation seen in the Eagle Nebula.
Program notes:
The piece opens up with shimmering metallic percussion and takes the listener on a journey from viewing the Pillars of Creation from a distance. The music zooms in and views the intricacies of each pillar through use of driving strings and solo woodwind lines. The piece grows, through use of electronic and cinematic effects, to reach the climax sounded by the full orchestra. After the apex of the piece, the music zooms out to view the three pillars as a whole through use of shimmering tones in the metallic percussion instruments, sustaining strings, and harp to close out the work similarly to how it starts.
This work was created using Logic Pro X and Native Instruments Kontakt 5 and various sound libraries. The lighting design was not to have flashing or strobing effects due to the bridge residing over Interstate 40 to prevent hazardous driving conditions. The collaboration took place over one month - Late September and Early October. Enjoy!

OETA Story on Old Bridge Giveaway aired on 07/20/09
This is a story that aired on OETA Public Television's The Oklahoma News Report in Tulsa Oklahoma as reported by Cathy Tatom and photojournalist Edwin Wilson and edited by Aaron Byrd. For more information or to contact us, please go to the new and improved oeta.tv
The verbatim script follows below...
PROGRESS OFTEN MEANS TEARING DOWN THE OLD TO MAKE WAY FOR THE NEW.
BUT ONCE IN A WHILE, RATHER THAN TEARING SOMETHING DOWN, SOMEONE HAS THE IDEA TO FIND IT A NEW HOME INSTEAD.
OETA'S CATHY TATOM TAKES US TO MUSKOGEE COUNTY WHERE AN OLD TREASURE NEEDS A NEW HOME.
THERE'S AN OLD GAL IN MUSKOGEE COUNTY WHO NEEDS A NEW HOME.
SHE'S LIVED DOWN THIS GRAVEL ROAD FOR 98 YEARS.
AND WET OR DRY, SHE'S ALWAYS BEEN THERE WHEN PEOPLE DRIVE BY.
SOME WOULD SAY AS THEY PASS THEY CAN HEAR HER BONES RATTLE.
SHE IS THE HISTORIC CLOUD CREEK BRIDGE NEAR BOYNTON.
NOW SOME WOULD ARGUE SHE'S PAST HER PRIME.
HER SKIN IS A LITTLE RUSTY...
HER NAILS NEED A MANICURE.
AND SOME OF HER WOODEN BEAMS ARE WARPED OR HAVE ROTTED AWAY.
BUT ALL-IN-ALL THERE'S STILL A LOT OF LIFE IN THE OLD GIRL ACCORDING TO ODIE SMITH OF THE BOYNTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY.
Odie Smith/Boynton Historical Society: As far as being strong there's nothing wrong with the bridge.
THE BRIDGE HAS BEEN A LIFE-LONG FRIEND OF DELORES, HIS WIFE AND LOVE OF 59 YEARS.
BOTH HAVE CROSSED IT MORE TIMES THAN THEY CAN COUNT.
BUT FOR SMITH, ONE PARTICULAR CROSSING STANDS OUT.
IT HAPPENED WHEN HE WAS A YOUNG MAN.
HE AND A FRIEND DECIDED TO GET LITTLE CRAZY AND DARING BY CROSSING THE LENGTH OF THE BRIDGE ON TOP OF ITS IRON ARCHES.
Odie Smith/Boynton Historical Society: We got here silly like. He got on one of them banisters and I got on the other and got straight up and walked across there.
IN THE FALL, THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION WILL REPLACE THIS OLD ONE LANE WOOD AND IRON BRIDGE WITH A MODERN, PAVED TWO LANE VERSION.
IT WILL MAKE GETTING ACROSS THE CREEK LESS OF AN ADVENTURE.
Odie Smith/Boynton Historical Society; You know why they're having to replace these? Farmers any more don't just have a 12 foot disc and stuff they've got big wide equipment and they can't get across these bridges.
AND WHILE O-DOT BELIEVES IN PROGRESS, IT DOESN'T WANT TO DEMOLISH THIS BIT OF OKLAHOMA HISTORY.
THE CLOUD CREEK BRIDGE IS ONE OF LAST REMAINING EXAMPLES OF WHAT'S CALLED A CURVE-TOP PONY TRUSS DESIGN.
THAT MAKES IT POTNTIALLY ELIGIBLE FOR THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES.
SO O-DOT WOULD RATHER GIVE THIS BRIDGE AWAY FOR FREE TO ANYONE WHO WILL TAKE IT TO AVOID TEARING IT DOWN.
Cathy: As with everything in life that's free, there's a catch. In this case, yes, the bridge is free, but you will have to pay to dismantle her and haul her away.
ODOT HOPES THE BRIDGE WILL CATCH THE FANCY OF A GOLF COURSE...
PARK...
OR RECREATION AREA THAT CAN REFURBISH IT FOR A PEDISTRIAN OR BICYCLE BRIDGE.
SMITH HAS A HOPE OF HIS OWN.
Odie Smith/Boynton Historical Society: We would like to have it.
HE ADDS, IN THESE TOUGH ECONOMIC TIMES, THE BOYNTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY DOESN'T HAVE FUNDS TO PAY TO MOVE IT INTO TOWN.
HOWEVER IT WOULD BE HAPPY TO HAVE SOMEONE DONATE THE COST, TO KEEP THIS OLD GIRL NEAR THOSE WHO HAVE KNOWN HER, AND LOVED HER, ALL THEIR LIVES.
NEAR BOYNTON, I'M CATHY TATOM, THE OKLAHOMA NEWS REPORT.

Bridging a gap
Adjoining Enid colleges now have a bridge to link them
by Bridget Nash
Staff Writer, Enid News & Eagle
A bridge has been built between Northern Oklahoma College Enid and Northwestern Oklahoma State University-Enid.
Literally. The two campuses have adjoining property lines and now have a bridge between them, as of Friday afternoon.
The bridge is a county surplus bridge from up north a few miles, said NOC Vice President Dr. Ed Vineyard. It can no longer support the weight of the oil field trucks and things that need to use that road.
The bridge can support the weight of students who may want to walk from one campus to another.
We're going to use it as a foot-traffic bridge, said Vineyard. We're going to landscape that area and make it a sort of walking path.
The bridge also is a symbol of the Bridge program between NOC and NWOSU.
The Bridge program was approved in 2007 and helps students who sign up for the program not only enroll concurrently at both campuses but transition from NOC to NWOSU.
We have the Bridge program that enables our students to get scholarships to Northwestern, Vineyard said. If a student graduates from NOC, they're automatically going to get a scholarship to Northwestern, depending on their GPA.
Bridge students also are able to use the libraries and computer labs on both campuses and participate in organizations at NOC and NWOSU.
The Bridge program applies to NOC campuses in Enid, Tonkawa and Stillwater and NWOSU campuses in Alva, Enid and Woodward.
