Sleepy Creek Lake, West Virginia
Sleepy Creek Lake is located in the heart of the Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area. The 24,000 acre WMA lies in Berkeley and Morgan Counties, west of Martinsburg, in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. The 205 acre lake is an impoundment of Meadow Branch and sits entirely in Berkeley County, between Sleepy Creek Mountain and Third Hill Mountain. In this video, I drive out to the lake and take in the views from various access points along the roads. Thanks for watching!

Hiking High Rock and Shockeys Knob on the Tuscarora Trail - Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area
This hike takes place in the Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area in the Pan Handle of West Virginia outside of Martinsburg. This loop trail crosses two high points. The highest point reached is the summit of Shockeys Knob at 1,870 feet and the much more interesting summit of High Rock (1,810 ft.). This trail is moderately easy class 1 trail with the exception of the High Rock scramble, which is class 3.
The trailhead has plenty of parking. The Trail begins just past the red barrier and continues on the Jeep trail. The trail leaves the main Jeep trail at a small clearing (1.3 miles) suitable for camping is. The Trail narrows to a footpath and descends to Little Brush Creek in .2 miles. The trial ascends 455 feet to the ridge and the junction with the Tuscarora Trail blazed in blue. Head North 1/10 of a mile to the High Rock overlook on the right side of the trail (blazed in white). This is a class 3 section that will require the use of hands to attain the highest point. The view is to the North, East and South. Pee Wee Point is located directly across the valley (see that hike video here From here back track to the Tuscarora trail and head south along the ridge for 2 miles where you will find another over look to the west. Not far from the overlook, you will find a spring. Continuing south is the junction with the white blazed Shockey Knob Shelter Trail. Following south on this trail toward the highest point of Shockeys Knob there are many areas suitable for camping. Tag the summit, whose marker indicates “Sharkey”, then work your way back to the trail and on to Shockeys Knob Shelter. The shelter is very nice, and worth a visit, whether or not you plan to stay there. From the shelter, it is a couple of minutes back to the Tuscarora Trail (heading north from the shelter). The trail descends to a junction with the Millrace trail blazed in yellow. The trail continues its descent to Little Brush Creek them accents to the parking area.

Devil's Pond at Sleepy Creek WMA, West Virginia PART 2 of 2
This is the second part of my Devil's Nose hike at Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area in Morgan County, West Virginia. After checking out the top of the Devil's Nose formation, I backtracked a little ways then found a path down to to Meadow Branch below the cliff. There are some nice rapids along the creek and I checked out the local swimming hole known as Devil's Pond. Thanks for watching!

Devil's Nose at Sleepy Creek WMA, West Virginia PART 1 of 2
This was a spur of the moment hike to the Devil's Nose rock formation that towers above Meadow Branch at the Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area in Morgan County west of Martinsburg, West Virginia. I utilize some poorly marked but well worn trails, including a section of the Tuscarora Trail, to reach the top of the cliffs. From Devil's Nose, some nice views of Sleepy Creek Mountain and Third Hill Mountain. This is the first of two hikes in the Devil's Nose area of the WMA. Please stay tuned for part 2. Hiking Pee Wee Point via the Beacon Trail and Pee Wee Trail - Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area
This hike takes place in the Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area in the Pan Handle of West Virginia outside of Martinsburg. The highest point reached is the summit of Third Hill Mountain at 2,171 feet (Berkeley County’s highest point), and the hike ultimately reaches the Pee Wee Point (1,660 ft.). This trail is easy (class 1) over mostly even terrain, only a couple logs to step over.
Using google maps will get you fairly close to the trailhead. I was coming from the east and google was about a ¼ mile short. Once at the trailhead there is parking along the North side of Hampshire Grade Rd.
Starting on the Beacon Trail you will find a washed out trail. The forest in this area is wide open which can make it difficult to differentiate the trail from the surrounding forest. While I was there a massive blow down blocked the trail, however since the forest is so open it was easily avoided. The trail is blazed in blue. All of a sudden the forest fills in and the trail narrows with mountain laurel lining the trail. This section has moss covering most of the trail making for a nice soft walkway. At 1.1 miles is the summit of Third Hill Mountain (2,171). On the summit is a Shanghai Beacon tower, with a ladder leading to a small platform approximately 50 feet up. The trail continues south where the grasses may impede on the trail in spring/summer. The junction with the Pee Wee trail occurs at mile 1.7. Turn left and continue straight on the Pee Wee trail through three clearings until it finally reaches Pee Wee Point at 3.5 miles. The view from Pee Wee Point is limited. Retrace the path to return to the trailhead.
