Slickrock MTB Trail - The Most Famous Bike Trail

This is Slickrock Bike Trail, an 11 mile loop in Moab, Utah. It was ridden by dirt bikers in the late 60's before becoming what is arguably the most iconic mountain bike trail in the world.
Early settlers referred to the surface as slick rock because on metal horse shoes it was a nightmare. Lucky for us, it grips tires like sandpaper.
This makes it possible to climb features that look completely absurd. We got a chance to hit some of the Jeep trails in the area, and could not believe the traction.
If you have the strength to keep spinning, every climb on the bike trail is doable. Just make sure you commit and don't stop spinning. Lose your momentum and tumble down an abrasive and unforgiving surface.
At least the helicopter ride to the hospital would have been amazing. The high desert of Utah is spectacular at all times of the year. Stopping for these views can make your first ride on Slickrock last over 5 hours, easy. A strong rider can do it in under 3. Whether you're racking up miles or enjoying the views, bring lots of water. I thought a liter would be more than enough for early October, but I was wrong. It heats up pretty fast out on the rocks.
Guide books usually rank Slickrock as a highly advanced trail. While I'd need to agree that it's pretty dangerous, there's nothing technical about it besides the super steep climbs. Most do agree that the ride is physically demanding. It looks like the hard wavy surface would let you conserve your momentum and fly halfway up the next climb, but that’s not usually the case. Sharp turns and creases in the surface will leave you pedaling hard after only a few sweet seconds of downhill.
We're pretty spoiled these days, as trail builders have become adept at stretching out the downs, but Slickrock's maintenance crew doesn't have the luxury of altering the terrain. There are no manmade features or excavations. On Slickrock, the trail is a white line drawn in paint.
From what I can see, it’s a good line to follow. Although it looks arbitrary at times, veering off of it can send you careening into a cactus patch or tumbling down a slope. Unless you know exactly what’s over the crest of the hill, you're best off following the markings.
Where the terrain allows for it, the painted lines take you on a roller coaster ride, akin to a snake run at a skatepark. Cherish these lines and bomb them brazenly, because you’ll be paying price shortly after.
Because Slickrock is such a famous trail, you can expect to share it with huge crowds at times. While I've read accounts of waiting in line to ride certain sections, it felt spacious and unrestricted when we rode it. Of course, some of the sections are shared with ATV's and Dirtbikes, but everyone is cool.
When you reach the end of Slickrock trail, you'll be pretty exhausted, and if you're like me, ready to hit one of the many eating establishments in Moab. Luckily it's a downhill ride back into town.
For advanced mountain bikers, Moab Utah offers some of the most treacherous and technical terrain around. That was the reason for our visit. Despite its mainstream appeal, Slickrock trail was still a priority; It's what you would call a bucket list trail. You’d be crazy to visit Moab and not ride Slickrock. Just make sure you come early to beat the crowds, and if you’re running inner tubes, keep your pressure well above 40PSI. I suggested that Randall reduce his tire pressure on a steep climb, and it resulted in a pinch flat later on.
While Slickrock trail is extraordinarily unique, it's not the only place in Moab you'll find this riding surface. In the next Moab video we'll have a look at Bartlett Slickrock, which is an open riding area that feels like a natural skatepark. This documentary celebrates 50 years of the Slickrock Bike Trail and its importance to the Moab community. It traces the Trail's evolution from its beginnings in 1969 – when Moab was a small Uranium mining town – to present day where visitors come from around the globe to ride its challenging landscape.
Slickrock Bike Trail is part of Sand Flats Recreation Area, and is jointly managed by the Bureau of Land Management and Grand County in Utah.

Slick Rock Trail Moab, UT
This trail leads right off the main road heading into the park. It is a great trail for hiking, mountain bikes and a nice easy scenic ride for dirt bikes. If your in the area doing Hell's Revenge, it is worth the time to take an easy cruise on this scenic trail.

There is a white line drawn in paint you are supposed to follow, good luck.
No way would I recommend this to a beginner.

MTB MOAB - Slick Rock Trail with Seth's Bike Hacks and BK-XC | The Singletrack Sampler
This is my second day in Moab with Seth from Seth's Bike Hacks and Brian from BKXC. For one of our days in Moab, we knew we had to ride the iconic slick rock trail. This turned out to be quite a unique and difficult ride. Much of the trail is a rollercoaster on the hard rock with steep and fast descents followed by G - out bottoms that quickly turn you back up to steep and punchy climbs.
I will say the views on the trail were pretty amazing, and overall I would definitely recommend riding this at least once, however, after that I believe there are some more fun options in the area to ride!

The Brands trails are mostly known for the easier terrain and often get snubbed by more advanced riders. I do not shy away from these rides, mostly because I appreciate a variety of terrain that has one thing in common….. A sweet downhill. If you aren't having fun, you're not riding fast enough Zack Sheets at OTE. I largely decided to ride the Sidewinder with the inspiration of James Barton calling it one of his favorite trails (paraphrase).
Sidewinder and the Brands Trails are located adjacent to Arches National Park and feature some low risk dirt terrain. It's a short 1.2 miles intermediate trail that's very flowy with isolated chunky sections. I had a good time riding it twice. Sidewinder isn't the only highlight as we'll check out Deadmans Ridge in the coming days.

Moab Mountain Biking - A Trail Analysis For Intermediates
This video is for experiencing Moab around 2010 and the trails before the big trail building effort started soon after. There weren't many single track trails back then and we biked motorized trails such as Sovereign and Poison Spider. Porcupine Rim was just that, no upper trails were marked and mapped. No one talked about The Whole Enchilada.
Today we shoot with gimbals for a smoother view, but back then 1080p was just starting to be popular so this video stood out from all the 720 content. We used cameras attached to our helmets and bikes. Now we mount the gimbal and camera on our chests and the view experience is much more engaging.
I shot all of this video on cross country bikes with 110mm of travel or less. Now MTB videographers shoot from trail or all mountain bikes with 140mm to 180mm. We can ride wilder trails like Capitan Ahab.
This video was once at the top of the search results and had over 10,000 views and a bunch of likes until I moved it from my personal channel to this one. I was once almost as well known from Santa Cruz to Fruita as Nate Hills and Bruce Kennedy (BKXC). It is their turn now :-)

Rockstacker & Jacksons Moab Utah 2018
A Fun day in the Amasa Back area of Moab.
The route we rode this day was 18.5k starting from the car park at the end of Jackson's. Start by riding up clifhanger (the jeep track) then an out and back on the pothole arch trail, linking onto Rockstacker then finishing on Jackson's.
Really epic riding, some of the sections were super tech. There was no way I was going to risk busting myself and missing out on more riding, so I rode well within my limits. Needless to say, some sections were walked.
Some of Jackson's is quite exposed as you can see. You are able to choose your pace down though which is nice. Its not like riding an exposed slip and slide. There is plenty of grip and its easy to stop if you need.

Bartlett Open Riding Area - Nature's Skatepark

Today we’re going to take a look at the most freaking awesome thing in the world. It’s called an open riding area. As someone with little interest in structured riding, it’s a dream come true.
Bartlett Slickrock in Moab, Utah is like mother nature’s skatepark. We got off to a late start and only had about an hour of daylight left by the time we reached the main part. We didn’t even know where to start. By the time we really started playing around it was almost dark out, so I’ll do my best show you guys around with what limited footage we got.
At first it seems totally obvious that you should just bomb the entire rock face. I’ve seen videos of Bartlett and would wonder why people weren’t just doing that. Let me give you guys a sense of scale. That’s where we are, and that’s the rock face you want to just brazenly bomb without regard. So yeah, if you plan on bombing the whole face of Bartlett, leave enough time to hike the whole thing and plan your line carefully. You could fly off a cliff.
Some of the features aren’t necessarily that big, but your mind plays tricks on you at this place. The scale of of your surroundings is really tough to comprehend when everything is this layered sandstone. There are no trees or familiar objects to help you get your bearings.
I should also mention the surface, which is very much like Slickrock Trail. As we’ve seen, it can be impossibly steep, yet possible to climb somehow. It’s this tacky surface that you’ll be riding on 100% of the time at Bartlett.
On a hardtail or even a dirt jump bike, you’d be having a blast here. I was on a mid travel trail bike, the Diamondback Release 3. With the suspension tightened up I was feeling really good.
Here is one of the most well known features at Bartlett, called toilet bowl. I think it should be called armpit. Anyway, it’s a really steep crease that ends at the top of another cliff, like pretty much everything else there. Alex and Randall went first. I was determined to bomb it first try and honestly got pretty spooked when I skidded around this bulge. I don’t get spooked easily.
We moved on to another feature called halfpipe, the last thing we rode before the sun went behind the mountain. This was extremely fun, and you can actually fly out of it if you plan your line. Just like toilet bowl, you should stop at the end so you don’t ride off a cliff. I never thought a natural feature could be so fun.
At the top of the rocks, there are all sorts of little bumps and divots you can fly in and out of. The random ledges are awesome too.
On the east side of the rocks, there’s some really cool stuff to session, and I’m sure plenty of lines that we missed during our short visit. As someone who rode skateparks all day growing up, Bartlett was a dream come true. I must admit I didn’t know there was a such thing as an open riding area. To me, that’s what riding street is.
We were there long enough to see the amazing potential, but had to leave too soon. I guess we need to go back to Moab. Thanks for riding with me today, and I’ll see you next time.
