Košice (Slovakia) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Košice in Slovakia.
The ancient royal city of Košice was once the centre of Northern Hungary and is today located in eastern Slovakia. In the fourteenth century it was granted many privileges and became a city of goldsmiths and bell-founders and also an important trading city. The Gothic Saint Elizabeth Cathedral characterises the architectural ensemble of the Old Town. It was named after the Hungarian king's daughter, Elisabeth, who was married to the Thuringian landgrave, Ludwig The Fourth, and who lived on the Wartburg. From 1380, and influenced by French architecture, the construction of the cathedral took a hundred and thirty years to complete. It was not until the end of the nineteenth century, and in corresponding spirit, that it was radically adapted according to Neo Gothic design. In the middle of a large market place, playful water fountains entertain beneath shady trees. In time with the music, the water jets perform balletic movements that never fail to attract many onlookers. Next, a freestanding carillon that has twenty two bells which ring out hourly with the melodies of east Slovakian folk songs. The East-Slovakian Museum is one of Slovakia’s oldest museums and contains the history of the city and surrounding area. It is also where the Golden Treasure Of Košice can be admired in full: almost three thousand gold coins from eighty one European mints dating from the fifteenth to the seventeenth centuries, plus a Renaissance gold chain. Košice became a powerful centre of both trade and culture and one of the largest and most prosperous cities of mediaeval times.

Design & Innovation | MAK FUTURE LAB
Cross-Border Cooperation between Design Institutions Transitioning to the Digital Age
At the beginning of the year, the MAK FUTURE LAB introduces the cross-border project “Design and Innovation,” whose aim is to create a Slovak–Austrian research cooperation between leading institutions of design and applied art in Bratislava and Vienna, with the goal of exploring contemporary design strategies.
The newly conceived MAK DESIGN LAB takes a holistic approach to this theme complex: objects from historical collections and contemporary artefacts produced by local and international designers enter into intensive dialogue, exploring—through this trans-disciplinary, trans-epochal approach—both design’s potential and the transformation it is currently undergoing.
Within the framework of the project, the Slovak Design Center is founding a research and development lab—a new department whose preliminary tasks include the creation of a materials library and the innovative, multi-medial presentation of objects from collections. Accompanying the project, the VŠVU (Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Bratislava) and Die Angewandte (University of Applied Arts Vienna) are offering their students a research-oriented specialization. From the beginning, young academics and artists will thus enter into dialog with experts participating in the project.
To kick off the project, the following panel members discuss the synergetic yet critically reflective relationship between design and innovation:
Vlasta Kubušová, crafting plastics studio (Bratislava/Berlin)
Ruth Mateus-Berr, die Angewandte – University of Applied Arts Vienna, Institute of Arts and Society, Social Design
mischer'traxler studio (Vienna), designer duo and VIENNA BIENNALE 2019 curators
Mária Rišková, Director Slovak Design Center (Bratislava)
Moderator: Christoph Thun-Hohenstein
Project partners: SCD – Slovak Design Center, Bratislava, MAK – Austrian Museum of Applied Arts / Contemporary Art, Vienna, VŠVU – Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Bratislava, die Angewandte – University of Applied Arts Vienna
The new research cooperation receives support within the framework of the EU program INTERREG V-A Slovakia–Austria.

Eurovea, Bratislava, Slovakia
PRIBINOVA RIVERFRONT
Eurovea ITC is a new riverfront district in Bratislava, Slovakia. The complex is located in the heart of the city, on the edge of the historical town centre. The project connects and completes the city of Bratislava to the River Danube.
The scheme provides a vibrant, new, mixed-use urban district of high quality architecture and public spaces, connects to and unifies the immediate environment. With a new public square at its centre, incorporating the Slovakian National Theatre, Eurovea acts as an extension of the historic heart of the City with its carefully restored Habsburg style architecture and vibrant café culture. Phase 1 of the development results in approximately 250,000 m2 of retail, leisure, entertainment, office, hotel, underground car park and residential space as well as an innovative riverfront park, pedestrian friendly streets and a major new public square. For all those reasons Eurovea is destined to become a new commercial heart of the City.

Heydukova ulica v Bratislave bude 17. 10. 2013 upravená v prospech alternatívnej dopravy a bezbariérových riešení (plynulý prechod z cesty na chodník, označenie cyklotrasy, presmerovanie parkovania) a doplnená mestským mobiliárom (lavičky, stojany, smetné koše).

Street for ALL, experiment by the Slovak Design Center, wants to show how it could be if there were less barriers and limitations for people in the streets, if the streets were not only for cars but also for pedestrians, cyclists, family with a trolley, people with limited mobility. The street will be modified in favor of alternative transport and barrier-free solutions (ramps, bicycle lanes, redirecting parking) and complemented by urban furniture (benches, bike racks, trash bins).
In Street for ALL the Slovak Design Center wants to show how a street can be a place for everyone.

Al Wakrah Stadium Qatar
Hadid’s fluid design for a showcase for the upcoming World Cup has been a lightning rod for controversy, both for its shape and the labor practices involved in its construction.
Beijing New Airport Terminal Building
Set to be the world’s largest airport terminal upon completion—twice the size of Heathrow’s Terminal 5—this 7.5 million square foot space was designed to handle roughly 125,000 passengers a day.
Changsha Meishihu International Cultural Centre
This sinuous, 1,800-seat performance venue for the capital of the Hunan province hasn’t moved much past the design and proposal stage since being unveiled in 2013.
Chartres Expo Chartres France
This star-shaped exposition center on the outskirts of Chartres was abandoned last year due to budgetary reasons.
Culenova City Centre Bratislava Slovakia
This unrealized mixed-use development for the Slovakian capital would have featured a series of elliptical towers.
Mariner’s Cove Brisbane Australia
Submitted last summer for approval, this pair of towers overlooking Australia’s Gold Coast iterate on a common form from the Hadid body of work; sleek, tapered towers wrapped in curved edges.
Grand Theatre de Rabat
The curvaceous exterior of this yet-to-be-built 1,800-seat theater references the flow of the nearby Bou Regreg River. It’s part of a larger cultural district development that, while still in the news, has stalled since being proposed in 2010.
Esfera City Center Monterrey Mexico
Hadid does Habitat with the sprawling Mexican apartment complex, a curved, nine-story stack of nearly 1,000 apartments surrounding a massive park, her first project in Mexico. Initially meant to be a series of tall towers, Hadid instead proposed a snaking, horizontal site plan.
Eleftheria Square Nicosia Cyprus
This large-scale urban planning effort would see this city’s historic, Venetian square fuse with Hadid’s curves and futuristic aesthetic. As of last summer, the controversial plan, which has taken far longer and cost far more than initially expected, is still marching forward, despite no firm completion date.
Kartal Pendik Masterplan Istanbul Turkey
This award-winning redevelopment scheme, yet to be acted upon, sought to turn an old industrial center into reactivated, thriving neighborhood.

SUMMARY
=======
Bratislava (; Slovak pronunciation: [ˈbratislaʋa] (listen), German: Preßburg or Pressburg IPA: [ˈpʁɛsbʊɐ̯k], Hungarian: Pozsony) is the capital of Slovakia. With a population of about 450,000, it is one of the smaller capitals of Europe but still the country's largest city. The greater metropolitan area is home to more than 650,000 people. Bratislava is in southwestern Slovakia, occupying both banks of the River Danube and the left bank of the River Morava. Bordering Austria and Hungary, it is the only national capital that borders two sovereign states. The city's history has been strongly influenced by people of different nations and religions, namely (in alphabetical order) Austrians, Bulgarians, Croats, Czechs, Germans, Hungarians, Jews, Serbs and Slovaks. It was the coronation site and legislative center of the Kingdom of Hungary from 1536 to 1783, and has been home to many Slovak, Hungarian and German historical figures.
Bratislava is the political, cultural and economic centre of Slovakia. It is the seat of the Slovak president, the parliament and the Slovak Executive. It has several universities, and many museums, theatres, galleries and other cultural and educational institutions. Many of Slovakia's large businesses and financial institutions have headquarters there.

Independent Scene, A Segment of Slovak Visual Art 1960-2000.
I had the pleasure of visiting this exhibition of Slovak Art from 1960-2000 in The Embassy of Slovak Republic in London. Here is more about it, as follows-
The exhibition presents a segment of the work of independent personalities from the 1960s and younger artists participating in the activities of the unofficial art scene in the 1970s and 1980s. The collection is supplemented with examples of the work of next generation artists, which have not been affected by the restricting ideology.
The exhibition curated by Zuzana Bartošová, research worker at the Institute of Art History, Slovak Academy of Sciences and Henry Meyric Hughes, Honorary President of International Association of Art Critics (AICA) Paris, opened the event. The works presented in the exhibition come from the First Slovak Investment Group's collection (Bratislava, Slovakia).
