When the Chinese want to get married, they come to Tsingtao : there’s nothing cooler than a wedding on the beach or in the bay. Even if it resembles a production line. Tsingtao was originally popular with the Germans, who introduced the city to beer at the beginning of the last century. The beaches here have only recently become accessible to every social class. On the sands, one encounters a surprising cross-section, those in their work clothes and business suits, and others who daringly sport a swimming costume, (although bikinis are rare). Many hesitate to take the plunge, because a lot of young Chinese quite simply can’t swim ! Rubber rings are therefore indispensable, and are carried, or worn around the waist, on the buses going to the beach. Some people are abandoning them, though, as they learn to swim : in 2008 Tsingtao will host the Olympic Games’ water sports events…

Qingdao - The Beer City in China
Qingdao, also known in the western world by its postal map spelling Tsingtao is really a major city having a population of over 8.715 million (2010 census) in eastern Shandong province, Eastern China. Its accumulated area, made of 7 urban districts and 5 county-level cities, houses about 4,896,000 inhabitants in 2010.
It borders Yantai towards the northeast, Weifang to the west and Rizhao for the southwest. The character (qing) in Chinese means green or lush, even though the character (dao) means island. Qingdao is administered at the sub-provincial level.
Lying over the Shandong Peninsula while looking out to the Yellow Sea, Qingdao can be a major seaport, naval base, and industrial centre. It is also the site of the Tsingtao Brewery. The earth's longest sea bridge, the Qingdao Haiwan Bridge, links the main urban area of Qingdao with Huangdao district, straddling the Jiaozhou Bay sea areas. Xiao Yu Hill (Chinese: 小鱼山公园, meaning Small Fish Mountain Public Park) is located east of the Laiyang road, Qingdao. It is 60 meters high and covers an area of 2.5 hectares. It is the first park hill with a style of classical gardens in Qingdao. From the hill, visitors can see Zhan Qiao Pier, Xiaoqingdao Island, Lu Xun Park (Qingdao), bathing beach, Ba Da Guan.

Eileen and I live a three-minute walk from Shilaoren Bathing Beach which is one of the most popular beaches in Qingdao, China. Upon returning for our new school year, we visited our beach which was extremely crowded and here's a video sharing that with you.
On the most part, the Chinese in Qingdao don't sit and chairs or lay on beach towels and read by the ocean like most Westerners. Instead, they stand by the ocean waves and sit either on the sand or in tents they set up to help protect them from the sun which too much is shunned in China.
We have done a fast time-warp video of our beach during this busiest time so that you can experience it for yourself and then at the end provide the pleasant unexpected surprise of a classic jazz band warming up on the beachfront for a small concert. Japan plans to purchase nearly 150 F-35 fighter jets from the US
The move is designed to make the country better able to defend itself against a more aggressive China and revanchist Russia.
Japan plans to purchase nearly 150 F-35 stealth fighter jets from the US — a move intended to revitalize the country’s aging military equipment to make it better able to defend itself against a more aggressive China and revanchist Russia.
Keitaro Ohno, a leading defense official in Japan’s parliament, told me and a small group of US reporters in his Tokyo office on Tuesday that the government will announce the decision during a rollout of new defense guidelines next week.
It’s a big purchase for Japan, as each F-35 costs about $100 million. The goal, Ohno said, is to replace 147 older fighter jets with the more modern planes, giving the country greater capabilities to defend itself militarily.
But global reactions will likely differ strongly. The news will surely please President Donald Trump, who has long criticized Japan for not investing enough in America’s economy.
But it will almost certainly anger China, Japan’s biggest regional military competitor. Not only will the purchase greatly improve Japan’s air defenses, it will also help the country develop closer ties with the US — right as China and the US are locked in an increasingly high-stakes trade war.
Japan’s desire for America’s high-tech F-35 planes, which have stealth capabilities, has long been known, and Japanese officials have signaled the decision in recent weeks. But this is the first time a senior Japanese official has confirmed that Japan plans to make the sizable purchase.
The New York Times also reported on Tuesday that Japan plans to convert some of its biggest warships into aircraft carriers that could carry the new F-35s. That would add Japan to the small club of countries with an aircraft carrier — further adding to rising tensions with China.
Japan is becoming more advanced militarily
Japan’s military is called the Self-Defense Forces — and that’s not just an artful euphemism for “armed forces.” It’s called that because, as outlined in the country’s post-WWII constitution, it’s only authorized to defend the nation from threats and is barred from attacking any other forces outright.
Which means the new F-35s probably won’t be attacking any Chinese ships anytime soon. But the purchase of the more capable aircraft — some of which can take off vertically as well as in the normal way — adds firepower to Japan’s forces.
It will also make the country’s military more able to operate alongside American troops, as they will both have the same warplanes now.
