Small SouthWestern Railway
The children's railway in Kiev has been working for half a century. It was built in 1953 in a wasteland, that has later turned into a gorgeous Syretsky park due to the work of volunteers: Komsomol members and railway workers.

Carpathian Mountains Road Trip | Yaremche | Ukraine | Travel Guide
We continue our tour of Ukraine with a few days in the Carpathian Mountains, using Yaramche as our base. Make sure you check out our other travel guides in the 5 part series.
The Carpathian Mountains slice through the southwest corner of the Ukraine, and as we love a mountain and the scenery we took a train from Kiev to Ivano-Frankivsk before hiring a car to drive into the mountains. You can watch our overnight train ride on another of the videos in this series.
Yaramche was our base, and some of the roads to get to the town were aweful! The local area has much to offer, sadly the weather was not on our side and we had rain, snow and overcast conditions for much of our time there.
The town has a few nice restaurants, a waterfall and some of those terrible roads!
You can drive around the mountain areas and most of the main roads are not to bad.

STORYLINE
A passenger plane carrying football fans headed for a match skidded past the landing strip and overturned in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk on Wednesday, killing four people, injuring two and leaving the fate of two others unknown, according to officials.
The small, Soviet-designed AN-24 plane was carrying 45 people from the Black Sea port of Odessa, according to emergency officials.
It was not immediately clear what caused the crash-landing.
The plane was operated by the small Southern Airlines company, which mostly runs domestic flights out of Odessa.
Four people have been confirmed dead, two were injured and the fate of two others remains unknown.
Donetsk Governor Andrei Shishatsky said that rescuers had located one of the missing people in the wreckage of the plane but were still unsure whether the person was alive, the Interfax news agency reported.
Surviving passengers described the incident as happening very fast and one said it had been a nightmare.
Most of the passengers were likely heading for the Wednesday night Champions League football match between Ukraine's Shakhtar and Borussia Dortmund.
The match opened with a minute of silence in memory of the dead.
In recent years, former Soviet republics have had some of the world's worst air traffic safety records.
Experts blame that record on the age of the aircraft, weak government controls, poor pilot training and a cost-cutting mentality.

Elderly woman uses flying trough to visit nearby village
(31 May 2017) LEADIN:
?An elderly woman in southwest Ukraine is using a death-defying flying trough to reach her nearby village.
Despite being nearly 80 years old, the woman says it's the only way to get to the shops.
STORYLINE:
?Life here in Nyzhny Bystry, a small village in southwest Ukraine, might seem simple.
?But for one 78-year-old village resident, it's a daily deadly challenge.
?Khrystynana Rosokha's path to the small village and its shops is blocked by the roaring Rika river.
?That's why for around fifty years she's been using this death-defying method to cross its rough waters.
Sitting in this swinging trough, she flies above the roaring river below, all the while pulling her weight towards the bank on the other side.
It's an exhausting journey, but far safer than attempting the several-kilometre detour, says the elderly villager.
I was not afraid of the river, but now I am. The depth here can be four to five metres. I knew that if I fell I could get injured, but anyway I'd be alive and could manage to get to the bank. But now I don't feel strong enough for that. Nobody cares when I cross the river, my neighbours never pay attention. But I have to cross the river and do it any time - in the morning, in the afternoon or evening. If I fall into the water, I could be eaten by beavers and then my son would call me, but it wouldn't be possible to reach me!
This so-called 'flying trough' was built by Rosokha's late husband, Mykhailo, around fifty years ago.
?An 80-metre cable is stretched across the river, a customised trough is pulled along the cable and over the river below using a rubber strap.
?A second method, which used a lever to pull the trough over the river, has since broken.
?But Rosokha says it's worth it. The five-minute trip on the trough is much faster than the 30-minute journey on foot.
?She regularly makes the journey to fetch food and other goods from her local store.
The 78-year-old often buys bread, sugar, flour, cereals, sweets, household chemicals and more. Everything she can't grow in her small garden.
?I can deliver some big stuff with the trough, she says.
?But for example, I would put flour on the trough and sit on top of the flour and pull myself over. It's difficult, very difficult.
?Nyzhny Bystry is home to around 2,000 people. The closest city, Khust, is around 30 kilometres away.
The village stretches for around six kilometres along the side of the Rika river.
?Three bridges cross the river and allow access to the village, but none of them come close to Rosokha's home on an outlying hill.?
Last winter, I didn't leave the house for three months - three months, the entire winter, she says.
?Heavy snow fell, there were no roads. I had to sit it out, like a bear in a den.
?But this brave, high-flying transport method is not without danger.
?Villagers say one man died after the cable broke halfway through his journey.
We have a bridge in the village so I don't risk (to use the trough), says villager Yuri Rosokha.
?I'm almost 70-years-old and I'm afraid, of course I'm afraid as we had death cases here.
?But that hasn't stopped 18-year-old villager Ivan Popovic learning to operate the flying trough.
?You take the rubber strap, sit on the trough, put it on the cable and pull towards yourself, he explains.
?But you have to be careful because it might come off the wheel and then you'll not get to the other bank.??Not everyone is allowed to use the trough.
?Yuri, Ivan's younger brother says his parents won't let him ride on the flying trough, so he has to take the long walk round while his brother and Rosokha glide above the river.
?It is not very safe so my parents don't allow me to ride it, says the 12-year-old.

Bus Ride on the Kennedy Airport Tarmac
We were in a hurry to get to our flight out of Kennedy Airport. For some reason, the terminal to board my assigned plane was on the other side of the airport, and I had to take a bus on the tarmac. Even though I ended up missing my flight back to California, I got to take a nice view of the Kennedy tarmac.

Our visit Lviv travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a food guide (both local and international), top sightseeing tourist attractions and the city by day including visiting neighborhoods, churches, cathedrals, the city centre and museums. We also cover off-the-beaten-path outdoor activities you won't find in a typical Lviv tourism brochure, Lviv itinerary or Lviv, Ukraine city tour.
20 Things to do in Lviv, Ukraine Travel Guide Video Script:
Today’s video is all about our visit to Lviv. Having come straight from Kiev, Lviv offered a real change of scenery. The city was much smaller, more walkable, and it looked distinctly Central European. In some ways, it reminded us of a smaller version of Krakow or Prague, though a little rough around the edges. But enough about first impressions; let us actually show you around. In this video we’re going to take you on a grand tour of the city and highlight 20 things to do in Lviv on your next visit, so let’s get started.
Like in Kiev, we quickly discovered that Lviv is a city of churches, so our next stop was the Church of the Holy Communion. After our sushi lunch, we visited the Bernardine Church in the south end of the Old Town; followed by the Latin Cathedral, which sits in the southwest corner of Market Square; and finally the Jesuit Church, where we stumbled upon yet another wedding!
And that’s a wrap for our visit to Lviv, Ukraine. We found this to be a charming city with a completely different look and feel from Kiev, so we’re glad we added this stop to our itinerary. If you’re short on time, this is a great destination for a weekend escape.
If you have any other suggestions of cool things to do around Lviv, feel free to share those with fellow travellers in the comments below. Wishing you happy travels!
This is part of our Travel in Ukraine video series showcasing Ukrainian food, Ukrainian culture and Ukrainian cuisine.
