The crack of the bat and the roar of the crowds are gone, but the grounds crew is in full swing cutting, aerating and pounding the mound at Smith's Ballpark. The field is home of the Salt Lake Bees--Utah's Triple-A baseball team.
This job fits me perfectly, said Brian Soukup, head groundskeeper.
He has 11 years of experience keeping baseball fields in pristine condition.
A lot of moisture management, a lot of detail work. The infield has to be level, has to play true so there are no bad hops, he explained. It has to be soft, but not too soft. Firm, but not too firm.
Working alongside Soukup are Kevin Asay and Ryan Heiner.
It's way better than sitting in an office, Asay said. Consistency and predictability is what the players are looking for.
These three men have reason to celebrate a big win on this two-and-a-half-acre field after receiving a championship grounds keeping award in the Pacific Coast League, which is made up of 16 teams. This crew got into the top three bracket.
For this field it's a long time coming, Heiner said.
For him, this award means more than just a plaque to hang on the wall.
When I first started here things were a lot of different, Heiner remembered. We were owned by the city and it was kind of a bad news bear type of crew that we had here with Kevin and myself and a few other. You were really on your own back then, so to see it come this far, be able to get recognized it feels good.
Soukup agrees with Heiner.
It's nice to be recognized. Groundskeeping has come a long way. It's not just some guy taking care of grass and dirt anymore, it's a real profession that a lot of people really work hard at, Soukup explained.
Believe it or not, all the work that's taking place now is actually for a season that doesn't even start until six months from now. It's expected to be a very busy season with 53 games in 58 days, including nine double headers.
The key to having a good field in the spring is how you take care of it in the fall, what I call 'putting it to bed,' Soukup said. The healthier we can get it right now, the better it's going to come out in March.
And come March, when fans walk into the stadium, hopefully they will notice more than just the players.
We kind of go for the 'wow factor,' Asay said.
But, just don't ask him one question: What does your lawn look like?
It looks terrible to be honest, Asay laughed. You know they say the contractors got the worst home on the block, right? The last thing when I go home, I don't want to mess with the grass.
The judges for the award include the umpires, the team managers, and the players. The other challenge the ground crew has is that the ballpark is also home field for the University of Utah baseball team. That means there are dozens of more games played on it and that really causes the field to take a beating.

Governor Gary R. Herbert has declared Thursday May 2, 2019 as “Utah Prevention Day”. The official day is a part of Resilient Utah, a state-wide program dedicated to building resiliency and hope in Utah’s children, protecting them from the dangers of substance abuse, self-harm and bullying. Utah elementary and secondary schools will be recognizing Utah Prevention Day by holding activities that celebrate the prevention efforts they have accomplished during the year. There will be a special Opening Ceremony and event called “Utah Prevention Day with the Bees”, held on May 2nd at the Smith’s Ballpark, in conjunction with a Salt Lake Bees game. More than 12,000 5th grade students and teachers will be in attendance. Among the special guests involved in the Opening Ceremony will be First Lady of Utah Jeanette Herbert, Lieutenant Governor Spencer Cox, Cónsul Titular of México José V. Borjón, KSL’s Deanie Wimmer, Steve and Lisa James and more than 500 student performers. Event partners include Salt Lake Bees, Multicultural Counseling Center, KSL, Utah Family Partnership Network and Something Good Inc.

Ava Hoekstra has been humming tunes and singing before she could even talk. She began vocal training with the Utah Conservatory in Park City, Utah at age 7, performed in her first professional musical theatre production at age 10, and has been singing and acting ever since. Her primary genre is Broadway tunes but also performs classical, folk and pop. This 14-year-old has also performed the national anthem at events including the IBU Biathlon World Cup at Soldiers Hollow, the Melissa Etheridge concert at the Ed Kenley Amphitheater and previous Salt Lake Bee’s game. Ava is currently cast in the role of Winnie Foster in TUCK EVERLASTING at the Hale Center Theater in Orem, Utah, which runs May 3 – June 15, 2019. Her past credits include her dream role as Dorothy in THE WIZARD OF OZ at the Hale Centre Theatre (HCT) in Sandy, Utah. She was the understudy to Lexi Walker, and was honored to have performed in over 35 shows during the production’s run. Past productions at HCT include MY SON PINOCCHIO and THE HEART OF ROBIN HOOD. She recently portrayed Small Alison in FUN HOME at Salt Lake Acting Company; and performed in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, IT HAPPENED ONE CHRISTMAS, OLIVER! and THE WILL ROGERS FOLLIES at Pioneer Theatre Company. Ava has participated in several singing competitions and, in 2017, was awarded first place and “Best Musical Theatre Piece” at the Con Brio Music Festival.

Recap: Utah baseball rallies to take final two games of series against USC
Pac-12 Networks' JB Long and Kevin Stocker take a look back at Utah's 5-4 win over USC at Smith's Ballpark on Saturday afternoon. After falling in game one of the series, the Utes managed to bounce back for victories in the final two matchups. Utah pitcher Joshua Tedeschi recorded a season-high seven strikeouts, while Erick Migueles went 3-for-3 with 10 hits and five runs. The Utes improve to 3-12 in conference play with the win.
