Black Bears in The Great Smoky Mountains: Sevierville, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg Tennessee #2
Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the few places remaining in the eastern United States where black bears can live in wild, natural surroundings. For many, this famous Smokies' resident is a symbol of wilderness.
Bears inhabit all elevations of the park. Though populations are variable, biologists estimate that roughly 1,500 bears live in the park. This equals a population density of approximately two bears per square mile. At one time, the black bear's range included most of North America except the extreme west coast. Because of the loss of habitat, the black bear is now confined to wooded areas or dense brushland.
All black bears in the park are black in color, but in other parts of the country they may be brown or cinnamon. They may be six feet in length and up to three feet high at the shoulder. During the summer months, a typical male bear weighs approximately 250 pounds while females are generally smaller and weigh less slightly over 100 pounds. However, bears may double their weight by the fall. Bears over 600 pounds have been documented in the park. Wild bears can live 12-15 years or more. Panhandler bears, who have had access to human foods and garbage, have a life expectancy of only half that time.
Bears, like humans, are omnivores. Plant materials such as berries and nuts make up approximately 85% of their diet. Insects and animal carrion provide valuable sources of protein for bears.
Bears have color vision and a keen sense of smell. In addition, they are good tree climbers, can swim very well, and can run 30 miles per hour.

White Supremacists To Visit Smokies
A White supremacist group is planning a trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park this weekend. The founders of the White supremacist webpage Stormfront are organizing the event which includes a walk in the Smokies Sunday, following workshops near Gatlinburg Saturday. Some visitors to the Smokies say they don't agree with the group, but say the members have a right to free speech. Others say the group is spreading racism and has no place in a national park The Great Smoky Mountains National Park says it hasn't heard from the group, so no special use permits have been issued. During your stay we invite you to make use of and enjoy our entire home, the only areas off use are those that are locked. We think you will find the location is very private and quiet but only 5 minutes from downtown Franklin. Franklin is rich in history and there are numerous historic sights to visit throughout the Downtown Franklin area. Be sure to check out the Downtown Franklin events calendar to see what festivals may be going on during your stay. One of our favorite Downtown gems is the 1937 Franklin Theater which offers movies, concerts, plays and more. The Main Street antique shops are filled with a wonderful assortment of unique items. One of our most favorite shops is Scarlett & Scales Antiques/Home/Apparel on 2nd. Ave. It's packed full of treasures that you won't find anywhere else. The Historic Factory in Franklin has some great little shops, tasty restaurants, and a wonderful Saturday morning farmer's market. Harlinsdale Farm has walking trails, concert series, and a dog park. Be sure to check their website for details. Downtown Franklin restaurants are delicious! The ever famous Pucketts has live music every night. The Red Pony offers a great wine and cocktail menu as well as amazing food! And be sure to stop by The Bunganut Pig. They have live, outside music every night and great bands downstairs on the weekends (their burgers are delicious!) Whether you are here for a weekend or a week be sure to take us up on some of our recommendations. If you need help planning your trip we'd be happy to assist, just be sure to give us some advance notice. We hope you will see and experience why Franklin was voted the most charming town in Tennessee.
Our cottage is a lovely one story home with 4 bedrooms and 2 full baths, a private fenced in backyard with pool, deck and covered patio area. We’ve done our very best to outline what makes up our property. Should you have any additional questions please be sure to reach out to the owners Bill & Sherrie.
