Smuttynose Brewing Company is a craft brewery located on the historic Towle Farm in Hampton, New Hampshire, United States. The company takes its distinctive name from Smuttynose Island, one of the Isles of Shoals. Smuttynose beers are all unfiltered and known for their distinctive labels, many of which feature original photography. They also travel widely, available in 25 states and 11 countries. The Towle Farm campus has been certified LEED Gold by the U.S. Green Building Council, recognizing the efficient design and green mindset of the company.
In March 2018, the company was sold at auction and subsequently purchased by Runnymede Investments of North Hampton, New Hampshire.
Smuttynose sold after 25 years
After 25 years in business, Smuttynose Brewing Co. and the Hayseed Restaurant were sold at auction Friday. One of the lead lenders, Provident Bank, took back the Hampton business for $8.25 million.

Smuttynose Brewing Uses Clean Energy Incentives to Succeed
Smuttynose president Peter Egelston often says sustainability is a journey, not a destination. The way state-of-the-art efficiency technologies find their way into the final construction of his $14 million brewery in Hampton, NH is testament to this journey. Peter describes the important role incentives played in helping reach for the best technology rather than settle for ‘o.k.’ alternatives. Today the Smuttynose Brewing Company facility is LEED Gold certified, only the second brewery in the U.S. and the third industrial facility in New Hampshire to be recognized as such.

Welcome to the Granite State's leading craft brewery, located in the historic seaport city of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Smuttynose was founded in 1994 by the folks who started the Northampton and Portsmouth Breweries. Our beers are distributed from Maine to Florida and as far west as Wisconsin.
Construction is moving forward nicely on our new brewery at Towle Farm in Hampton, as the images to the left attest. The structural steel is all in place; the roof decks have been laid; the wall panels are being installed and the floor slabs are being poured.
Work on the farmhouse restaurant will begin soon. So we're still on track for a late fall opening.
Why's there sediment in my IPA?
We occasionally get inquiries about the lees (sediment) that sometimes appears in our IPA bottles. What is it and why is it there? people want to know. It is a combination of malt proteins, hop tannins & yeast, which occur naturally in a dry-hopped, unfiltered beer such as Smuttynose IPA.
Because most mass-produced beers are subjected to intense filtration - mostly for aesthetic reasons - many people have grown accustomed to crystal-clear beers. We, too, could make a beer that is pretty and bright by processing it that way, but that would sacrifice flavor, which we are not willing to do. We like the way our IPA tastes, so we've chosen to live with our ugly beer, even though this may not please everyone. So here's to lees, a healthy & natural feature of our homely IPA! Cheers!
