Jemez Mountain Trail #2 - Soda Dam
The Soda Dam, along NM state road 4, is a large hot spring deposit, made mostly of calcium carbonate. The springs used to empty out onto the dam over the Jemez River, but most of the water now exits from the road-cut across the road. Courtesy of the NM Department of Transportation. The Soda Dam hot spring waters start at the Valles Caldera, heated by the hot rock and magma beneath. They travel as hot ground water through Pennsylvanian limestone and shale, and rise to the surface along a fault at the Soda Dam. Most of the carbonate rock of the Dam bears traces of algal filaments, and Soda Dam rock has been used in studies of how ancient Martian life might be detected.

Exploring Battleship Rock in New Mexico
In this video, I take you on a little hike around Battleship Rock picnic and hiking areas. Now, don't confuse Battleship Rock with Ship Rock. Both are in New Mexico, but they are very different. When my husband said we were going to go to Battleship Rock, I assumed he meant Ship Rock and I was very confused when we were heading in the direction we were. Battleship Rock was formed by volcanic rock and stands about 200 feet tall. It is a beautiful place to hike, fish and picnic.
This area is about 4 miles north of Jemez Springs, New Mexico on Highway 4. There are several picnic benches or you can find a place to sit by one of the two little rivers that meet in the area. Watch out for poison ivy by the river.
Michael did more sitting and I did more hiking this trip as I wanted to share video of the area with you. I hope you enjoy the video. Please subscribe to my channel as I will be bringing you more of my adventures.

Sky Island - New Mexico's Jemez Mountains
In Northern New Mexico a range of mountains rises up from the high desert: a wild, rugged land of the Faraway Nearby. The volcanic Jemez Mountains are isolated from all other ranges -- an island in the sky, surrounded by a desert sea. In Sky Island, filmmaker John Grabowska profiles this enchanting landscape and our place within it. Narrated by Meryl Streep and N. Scott Momaday, Music by Todd Boekelheide.
Roadtrip Pit Stop at Soda Dam
Soda Dam Falls is a roadside must stop on State Road 4. You will see this spot just outside of Jemez Springs, New Mexico. It is well worth the stop on your way to Valles Caldera or Bandelier National Parks.
The dam is a build up of minerals such as travertine and calcium carbonate. I read that the travertine deposits in this dam are about 7000 years old and that there are deposits in the area reaching 1 million years old (US Dept. of Agriculture, N.D.).
This is a nice area to get out and stretch your legs as you travel through the area. There are hiking trails and hot springs in the area to explore as well.
