America's Wildest Places - Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska
A land of awe-inspiring beauty, Kenai National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska is also home to a wide variety of wildlife including moose, eagles, brown and black bears, lynx, wolves, and trumpeter swans.
WILDLIFE & HABITAT
Nearly two million acres in size and the most visited refuge in Alaska, Kenai Refuge is characterized by its diverse habitats and wildlife.
Ice Fields & Glaciers - The eastern portion of the refuge descends from the 6,500 Harding Ice Field to 2,000 to 4,000 ft. peaks in the western Kenai Mountains. Ice fields and glaciers are vital sources of fresh water for wildlife and people. Mountain goats, brown bears and ravens have been sighted crossing glaciers and on nunataks - exposed mountains projecting above the glacial ice.
Mountain Tundra- Tree line ends at 1,500 to 2,000 ft. with low growing tundra plants and shrubs continuing in elevation to snow and rock fields at 4,000 ft. Dall sheep, mountain goats, and caribou roam this rugged country. Hoary marmots form colonies on talus slopes. Brown bears graze for berries and occasionally take marmots and sheep. Wolves and golden eagles have been known to be successful hunters of young sheep. Wolverines scavenge the carcasses of dead sheep and goats.
Northern Boreal Forest- From sea level to 2,000 ft., the northern boreal forest is found on the refuge. This forest is composed predominately of white and black spruce, birch, aspen, and cottonwood trees in various stages of succession. This habitat is an important nesting area for summer migrants including orange-crowned and myrtle warblers, olive-sided flycatchers, fox sparrows, ruby crowned kinglets, and Swainson's and hermit thrushes. Local resident birds include great horned owls, hairy and downy woodpeckers, spruce grouse, red-breasted nuthatches, and boreal and black-capped chickadees.
Lakes & Wetlands- The northeastern portion of the refuge is dotted with hundreds of small lakes surrounded by wetland tundra or spruce/hardwood forest hills. This large wetland habitat supports migratory breeding birds including common and pacific loons, grebes, trumpeter swans, sandhill cranes, ducks, and shorebirds. Mammals found within this habitat include caribou, moose, beaver, muskrat, and mink. The lakes support a variety of fish species, such as rainbow trout, arctic char, red and silver salmon, and sticklebacks.
Within this habitat, the Chickaloon River Flats remains the last pristine major saltwater estuary on the Kenai Peninsula.
Rivers- The refuge is drained by nine river systems, including the world famous Kenai River, renowned for its wide variety of sport fish including Chinook (king), sockeye (red), and coho (silver) salmon, and Dolly Varden and rainbow trout.

Driving Directions:
From Anchorage, drive 90 miles on the Seward Highway to the junction of the Sterling Highway. Turn west at Milepost 37 of the Sterling Highway and travel 18 miles to the eastern Refuge boundary at Milepost 55 of the Sterling Highway. In three more miles (Milepost 58, Sterling Highway), you find the Refuge Visitor Contact Station on the north side of the Sterling Highway, a self-serve information facility during summer months. On the south side of Sterling Highway at Milepost 58 is the eastern turn off for Skilak Lake Road. This 19 mile gravel loop road leads to Refuge hiking trails, campgrounds, and a scenic drive and then rejoins the Sterling Highway at Milepost 75. Whether you take the Skilak Lake Road or the Sterling Highway from Mile 58, you are approximately 40 miles from Soldotna and the Refuge Visitor Center.
To find the Refuge Visitor Center when you arrive in Soldotna, travel to mile 95 of the Sterling Highway, crossing the Kenai River Bridge. Once you cross the river, immediately get in the far left turn lane and make a left on to Funny River Road. As soon as you are on Funny River Road, prepare for an immediate right turn on to Ski Hill Road. Ski Hill Road is gravel, and you will drive one mile up the hill and make a left turn on to a paved road leading to the Visitor Center. The Center is open daily in summer (Weekdays: 8:00AM--4:30PM; and weekends: 9:00AM--5:00PM) and Monday through Saturday from October through April (Weekdays: 8:00AM--4:30PM and Saturdays: 10:00AM-5:00PM).

Kenai Alaska Wildfire 2019: Swan Lake Fire Operations Update By John Glover
Watch this thorough video update of the 18,700 acre #SwanLakeFire burning in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge by Alaska IMT2 Operations Chief John Glover. Filmed in Sterling, Alaska on June 19th 2019 with photos and videos contributed by fire personnel. Many partners and cooperating agencies are involved with managing this lightning caused wildfire including Kenai Peninsula Borough, City of Kenai Fire Department, City of Soldotna, the City of Sterling and many more.

Hand crews supported by aerial resources have dedicated all efforts to limit the amount of fire growth towards Sterling and the Sterling Highway corridor. Tuesday evening, the Gannett Glacier Type 2 Initial Attack Crew took advantage of a favorable weather window in the evening that allowed firing operations to proceed on the eastern flank. The goal of these operations is to remove fuel sources before the fire approaches, and to begin mop up as soon as possible to create a strong control line. With the need for the firing skills and expertise of hotshot crews, five crews from the Lower 48 were ordered Tuesday and will begin arriving later today to bolster the efforts of the four Alaskan crews currently engaged in suppression efforts.

Fire activity is anticipated today on the eastern flank of the fire where continuous black spruce stands are very receptive to fire spread. The short- and long-term goal is to prevent the fire from getting established east of Mystery Creek Road. Aerial supervisors will assess the fire behavior and will direct helicopter bucket work and air tankers as needed to keep this edge in check. Fire crews will continue to look for opportunities to utilize burnout operations and will begin the process of mopping up control lines.
Firefighters and fire prevention specialists are visiting Sterling community neighborhoods to assess the readiness of homeowners. The Alaska Interagency Incident Management Team is hosting a community meeting Friday, June 21, at the Sterling Community Center at 6 p.m. Incident command staff will be on hand to provide fire information and will share the strategies and tactics being used to protect critical infrastructure throughout the community. All interested residents are welcome to attend and ask questions about this incident and efforts being made to protect the community and critical infrastructure.
OBJECTIVE: The fire is burning in a Limited protection area within the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. Fire managers with the Alaska Division of Forestry are working collaboratively with refuge personnel to manage the fire. The focus of all suppression efforts is to protect all of the values at risk including the community of Sterling and the highway corridor while reducing future wildland fire hazards and enhancing wildlife habitat.
WEATHER: Winds are predicted to be lighter today with a warming and drying trend continuing this week.
SAFETY: Motorists are urged to yield to fire apparatus entering the Sterling Highway and to adhere to traffic signage staged near miles 82 and 92. Observing the fire from a safe location should be practiced instead of stopping along the highway. For current road conditions visit Supporting agencies are posting fire and smoke-related information, official updates and helpful links at kpboem.com. The Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is still in effect to support suppression efforts and firefighter safety. Pilots can confirm the current TFR restrictions at tfr.faa.gov. After a delicious breakfast in a family-style setting, complete with china on doilies and a house full of period piece antiques from the early 1900's, take a tour through the multi-level home, appreciate the ambiance, art, and decor; sit by the fireplace or one of the many windows and enjoy reading a garden book or Alaskan novel.
Take a five-minute walk and check out the Jade Boutique for vintage treasures, or a delicious lunch/dinner at Big Daddy's BBQ restaurant or the yummy Thai Noodle restaurant. Bobby's Downtown is an impressive Greek restaurant and bar. There are several karaoke bars.
It's a nice walk to the visitor center along the Chena River near the Marriott Hotel, and the new Morris Thompson Cultural & Visitors Center near the Marriott.
There are plenty of antique and gift shops, a Co-op Plaza with lots of nice stores including the Two Street Gallery and a full menu Crepery. The Ice Museum is closed until May, and the Art House Gallery on Cushman & 10th near the bus station is well worth a visit.
And in the opposite direction down Cowles from the Heritage House is the 9th Ave. Hostel where the northern lights can sometimes be seen, a central bus station for trips to the Santa Claus House, North Pole, University of Alaska Museum of the North, etc. About a 15-minute walk further down Cowles is a full service camera store in the strip mall by the gym.
If you opt for a rental car in winter, try to book a vehicle with snow tires.

Hanging With Alpacas--Alaskan Style
In Homer, Alaska, the snow came early on October 16, 2012. Five inches of snow covered all the grass in the field and the alpaca pen. Gypsy and Canela had no more grazing. Lucky for them, their owner loves to hang out with them. So on sunny days, even if it is cold and windy, she takes them around the front of the house where she shovels the snow off the grass. They all get to hang out together. The scenery isn't bad either!
