Scuba Diving in Miami Beach Florida
I've been scuba diving all around the world, but this was my first time ever diving in America! Water is California is cold so I never did it, but here in Florida, it's 77 degrees f, or 26c which isn't too bad. Follow the blog at for updates and follow the journey.

Dema Trader Wreck Dive with SOUTH BEACH DIVERS Miami FL
The DEMA Trader (formerly known as the GGD Trader) is a 165-foot-long freighter in 80 feet of water about 3 1/2 miles off Key Biscayne.
The ship was seized by U.S. Customs for carrying drugs, and was renamed DEMA Trader after the Dive Equipment and Marketing Association annual convention held in Miami Beach on October of 2003. She was sunk October 28, 2003.
The ship is keel down in the sand with the stern lying in 80 feet of water and the bow in 75 feet of water. Large openings were cut in the sides of the superstructure to allow safe penetration dives into the former galley and cabin areas. Tons of concrete culvert pipes and junction boxes were loaded into the ship’s cargo hold, creating ballast in case of storms, and providing more habitat than just an open cargo hold.
The ship has a large profile making it easy to find with a decent fish finder. Most of the dive can be seen at 60 feet of water. Great dive!

Wreck Dive - Princess Britney Miami Beach Florida
A one-time drug-smuggling ship is now a new South Florida's artificial reef. U.S. Customs seized the 165-foot MV Princess Britney during Operation River Walk when they say they found 156 kilograms of cocaine hidden underneath the deck of the engine room. The MV Princess Britney was sunk around 3.5 miles off the coast of Key Biscayne. The ship came to rest on a sandy bottom about 90 feet below the surface. It is a popular site that is serviced by dive operators in Miami, Miami Beach and Key Biscayne. It requires an Advanced Certification to dive there.

SCUBA Diving - Beach Dive off Hollywood Beach Florida
While SCUBA diving in places like the Keys, Bahamas or Cayman Islands are much more scenic and colorful, one advantage of living the past 30+ years in South Florida is the ability to beach dive whenever you have some spare time.
In much of the United States, there is really not much to see underwater within swimming distance of the shoreline.
But in South Florida (starting approximately at the West Palm Beach and southward region), you can strap on your tanks and gear, swim out about 500 yards with a dive flag in tow and drop down to 20-25 feet and spend 90 minutes underwater enjoying the northern-most edges of the tropical reefs that become larger and more scenic as you head into the true tropics of the Caribbean.
So while it may not be as grand and colorful and a full blown dive vacation to the islands, it is nearby and cheap.
At a moments notice, you can throw your tanks and gear in the car -- drive 30 minutes to the beach -- and be exploring the reefs within the hour.
Figure $4 for an air fill and $6 for a slice of pizza and soda when you get back on land and it makes for a great inexpensive way to spend the day for $10.
This video shows what lies underwater just a few hundred yards offshore at Hollywood Beach Florida.
This beach is pretty much equidistant between Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach along the East Coast.
A much quieter and less populated beach area as the video reveals (although sadly, signs of urban sprawl are getting closer each year)
Enjoy.
A minute in Proteus Wreck Dive Scuba with South beach Divers Miami Florida.
The Proteus is a 220' freighter sunk in the Key Biscayne Artificial Reef Site on January 24, 1985. This site is one of the shallower wrecks dives in South Florida, resting in only 72' of water with at least 30' of relief (top deck is at 50'). This artificial reef site makes an excellent opportunity for the novice wreck diver and serves as a great introduction to Miami's exceptional collection of artificial reefs.
She was once a ferry boat on the Great Lakes before carrying freight and supplies between the Caribbean islands. Most of her superstructure was removed to allow maximum cargo space, but the ship failed to make a profit resulting in bankruptcy in 1980. The freighter sat on the Miami River for 5 years as a derelict vessel behind Bud's Auto Parts on 34th Avenue. During its tenure as Bud's garbage barge, thousands of license plates were thrown into the ship from the auto shop. Although most of the plates have been salvaged by sport divers as souvenirs, if you look close you may still be able to find one laying in the hold to this day.
NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors) expressed their interest in helping to obtain and sink a ship in late 1984 and discovered the Proteus through Ben Mostkoff, then Director of the Miami-Dade County's Artificial Reef Program. Volunteers cleaned and prepared the ship to made it environmentally safe before sinking.
Resting on a sandy bottom, not far from the popular Biscayne wreck, the Proteus was broken into several large pieces by the forces of Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Since the structure spread out over a wider area, more marine life seems to have taken up residence in the various twisted metal remains of the wreck. Moray eels, schooling grunts, barracudas, angelfish and the occasional groups can be found within the wreck and around debris field.

Diving the Army Tanks Miami Beach, FL
It ain't Truk Lagoon but there are some Army Tanks off of Miami Beach. These are in about 40 feet of water and there are two tanks, a barge and a big pile of rocks on an otherwise sandy bottom directly 1 miles straight east of the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach. The current there gets really strong and the visibility is usually not too good. If you dive this, go early in the morning before the current kicks up and it deteriorates pretty quickly.
You can book a boat out there through South Beach Dive and Surf Center

Underwater Hotel: Scuba Diving in Miami
Scuba dive with us to the Underwater Hotel, Jules' Undersea Lodge, in Key Largo at 21 ft depth (6.4 meters). A true hidden gem in the Miami area. Photos & my PADI diving advise:

I just returned from Miami where I obtained my PADI open water diving license. It required 3 full days of diving plus many online courses in order to get certified. The courses and gear set me back $600 Canadian dollars.
At Molasses Reef we dove to a depth of 42 ft, around 12 meters navigating through gorgeous corals and ocean life. The ocean was quite wild causing many people on the boat to get seasick and throwup.
The toughest part must have been crunching the dive tables which help you avoid decompression sickness, a serious illness caused by nitrogen bubbles forming in the bloodstream by moving up too fast from deep water to the surface.
The lagoon water at Jules' Undersea Lodge isn't that clear but still worth visiting. Underwater room rates start at $150 per person for a 3-hour stay knowing how to dive is required to get to your room since it is located at a depth of 21 ft, 6.4 meters.
My diving equipment existed out of fins: Mares, Piana avanti HP 9.5/10.5. 44-45. Outer jacket: Henderson divewear size L and Body wetsuit: Henderson divewear 3mm size M.
If you are considering becoming a PADI open water diver I recommend South Beach Dive & Surf shop in Miami, where I received a massive discount by using this Groupon. Go make use of it while it is still valid, check my blog for details:

West Palm Beach Free Dive with Huge Hammerhead Sharks (Florida Travel Vlog)
Who would have thought that right outside of West Palm Beach you could free dive with hammerhead and lemon sharks for only $195! Although this one lemon shark kept coming for me, we felt very comfortable because our captain Bryce has been conducting these trips every day for eight years. Florida Shark Diving offers shark snorkel trips all year round. We were so fortunate to spend a full hour swimming with hammerhead and lemon sharks. Some days, visitors also see Bull and Tiger Sharks! Definitely check them out at the link below.
