Providence, Rhode Island
Providence is the capital and most populous city in Rhode Island. Founded in 1636, it is one of the oldest cities in the United States. It is located in Providence County, and is the third-largest city in the New England region after Boston and Worcester. Providence has a city population of 182,911 and is part of the 37th-largest metropolitan population in the country, with an estimated population of 1,600,856, exceeding that of Rhode Island by about 60%, as it extends into southern Massachusetts. This can be considered in turn to be part of the Greater Boston commuting area, which contains 7.6 million people. The city is situated at the mouth of the Providence River, at the head of Narragansett Bay.
Providence was founded by Roger Williams, a religious exile from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He named the area in honor of God's merciful Providence, which he believed was responsible for revealing such a haven for him and his followers to settle. After being one of the first cities in the country to industrialize, Providence became noted for its jewelry and silverware industry. Today, the city of Providence is home to eight hospitals and seven institutions of higher learning, which has shifted the city's economy into service industries, though it still retains significant manufacturing activity.

GREAT SWAMP OF RHODE ISLAND
Bob & I are getting into hiking shape for the 2016 season by starting off with a relatively short (5 mile) hike near our home. We are hiking the Great Swamp Management Area in West Kingston, RI today. It's beautiful, relatively flat, and has an interesting history… but that's a story for another time.
Cycling through the Trestle Trail in Coventry, RI
What a day of #adventure #cycling it was. ~30 miles through the #forest #trails just because we wanted to cross the #Connecticut state border. This #trail follows the old #railroad #tracks. And the windfarm was a bonus - literally we came out to a clearing in the trail and there it was in the middle of nowhere - we couldn't help it: rode to it and shot a few pictures and a movie. The old #trestle was fun and the water was lovely. All in all the forest sections were a bit gruesome, lots of mud and gravel and deep sand: lots of walking :-D

Rhode Island
Rhode Island (/ˌroʊd ˈaɪlɨnd/ or /rɵˈdaɪlɨnd/), officially the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, is a state in the New England region of the United States. Rhode Island is the smallest in area, the eighth least populous, but the second most densely populated of the 50 US states behind New Jersey. Rhode Island is bordered by Connecticut to the west and Massachusetts to the north and east, and it shares a water boundary with New York's Long Island to the southwest. It also has the longest official name of all the states.
Rhode Island was the first of the original Thirteen Colonies to declare independence from British rule, declaring itself independent on May 4, 1776, two months before any other colony. The State was also the last of the thirteen original colonies to ratify the United States Constitution.
