Avalanche on the Road at Lake Tahoe (Lake Tahoe, Nevada)
We were driving around Lake Tahoe and not too soon after the Nevada border, the edge of the road had a bit of a land slide!
Lake Tahoe (/ˈtɑːhoʊ/) is a large freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada of the United States. Lying at 6,225 ft (1,897 m), it straddles the border between California and Nevada, west of Carson City. Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America, and at 122,160,280 acre·ft (150,682,490 dam3) trails only the five Great Lakes as the largest by volume in the United States. Its depth is 1,645 ft (501 m), making it the second deepest in the United States after Crater Lake in Oregon (1,945 ft (593 m)).
The lake was formed about 2 million years ago as part of the Lake Tahoe Basin, with the modern extent being shaped during the ice ages. It is known for the clarity of its water and the panorama of surrounding mountains on all sides. The area surrounding the lake is also referred to as Lake Tahoe, or simply Tahoe. More than 75% of the lake's watershed is national forest land, comprising the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit of the United States Forest Service.
Lake Tahoe is a major tourist attraction in both Nevada and California. It is home to winter sports, summer outdoor recreation, and scenery enjoyed throughout the year. Snow and ski resorts are a significant part of the area's economy and reputation. The Nevada side also offers large casinos, with highways providing year-round access to the entire area.

The beautiful big blue Lake Tahoe is split *almost* down the middle between California and Nevada. You can drive around the entire 72 miles of shoreline in about 2.5hrs, with activities like kayaking, hiking, paddle boarding, biking, swimming, gambling or simply just staring at the crystal clear (slightly chilly) waters for a while. Sand Harbor Beach and Emerald Bay were one of our favorite spots amongst the gorgeous scenery.

Lake Tahoe Vacation Travel Guide
Lake Tahoe Vacation Travel Guide
Filled with over 39 trillion gallons of pure Sierra snowmelt and pushed a mile into the Californian and Nevada skies, Lake Tahoe is the USA’s largest alpine lake and one of the country’s oldest, year-round vacation playgrounds.
Lake Tahoe has forever drawn travellers to its shores, from the Native Americans who call this place Big Water, to the trappers, timber cutters and pioneers who followed.
When you’re ready for a little alpine magic, take the four-hour drive from San Francisco to the sunlit shores of Kings Beach. Set on Tahoe’s northern end, this beach was named after local card shark, Joe King, who used his winnings to develop some of the lake’s earliest lodgings. On the lake’s southern shore, is Pope Beach, where you’ll find another Tahoe institution, Camp Richardson.
From Pope Beach follow the bike path to the Taylor Creek Visitor Center. An open-air classroom for the entire family, the center features fabulous interpretative walks such as the Rainbow Trail.
Nearby, at DL Bliss State Park, follow the spectacular Rubicon Trail into neighboring Emerald Bay State Park. This park is home to the Eagle Falls Trail, a moderate two-mile hike that takes in some of the Sierra high country’s finest views.
When the ponderosa pines bend with the season’s first snow, Tahoe transforms into the nation’s favorite winter playground. Whether you’re looking for snow-capped peaks or crystal clear coves, places to bond with loved ones or pockets of pure solitude, The Lake in the Sky has it all.

Cycling Lake Tahoe
75ish mile around Lake Tahoe starting and finishing at King's Beach. Total ride time was about 4:30. The ride was very beautiful and mostly a combination of flat and rolling terrain. Only 3-4 climbs, mostly on the East and South portion of the lake. Tons of cars and construction though the motorists (minus 2-3) were very courteous towards cyclists. Beautiful ride that I'd love to do again!

Trail Preview of the Van Sickle Downhill in South Lake Tahoe
This is the Downhill portion of the Van Sickle Trail in Lake Tahoe. A full preview of the downhill section of the trail. The conditions could not have been better. It had just stopped raining with a temperature of 65 degrees. Drying dirt and over cast clouds for filming. This is such a fun trail that ends right in the heart of the Stateline casinos. The trail starts in Nevada and ends up on the California and Nevada border. Caution: this is a multi use trail that is busy at times.

Lake Tahoe
In this episode of Cheap Family Travel ( Nick, Regan, Maggie and Kate visited Lake Tahoe in Tahoe City, California. Lake Tahoe straddles the border of California and Nevada and is a great destination for a family vacation. The lake offers boating, jet skiing, kayaking, parasailing, paddle boarding (SUP), and swimming. The summer weather is amazing and the beaches are perfect. We enjoyed rafting the Truckee River and biking the many trails along the lake and river. Tahoe hosts many different events and festivals throughout the year and we caught the free Music on the Beach Concert. Tahoe offers many different lodging options from camping along the lake to beautiful resort condos and houses.
A short drive from Tahoe City takes you to Squaw Valley Ski Resort where the 1960 winter Olympics were held. You can also stop at Donner Memorial State Park and visit the site where the Donner Party was stranded in the winter of 1946-47. We visited the Emigrant Trail Museum where we learned all about the Westward Movement.
Lake Tahoe is a must visit for everyone. The lake, the mountains, the weather... it is the perfect vacation spot.
