London Wine: London's First Vineyard Since The Middle Ages
SUBSCRIBE:
FOR the first time since the Middle Ages, grapes from a commercial-scale vineyard have been harvested in London. Volunteers from Forty Hall Vineyard in Enfield, north London, have picked bunches of tiny ortega grapes - all within view of landmarks such as Canary Wharf and The Shard. These grapes, with other varieties yet to be picked, will be used to produce still and Champagne-style sparkling white wines.

THE LONDON INTERNATIONAL WINE AND SPIRITS FAIR
Around 15,000 visitors from the UK and around the world use the Fair as a buying platform, to see what new wines are available and to research industry trends. It's perfect for: Importers; Wine merchants; Sommeliers; Off licence managers; Wholesalers; Restaurateurs; Producers; Pub / bar managers; Caterers.
LIWF and Distil Post Show Figures: The London International Wine Fair and Distil closed on 2011 with both exhibitors and visitors reporting a very successful and positive event. The seamless organisation of the three-day show by Brintex was praised yet again, as was the quality of the visitors attending the event.
There was a packed and varied timetable of interesting briefings, seminars, tastings and masterclasses, covering a wide range of industry topics; and the LIWF features, new and existing, proved to be as popular as ever.
The final visitor attendance figure stood at 13,754, a slight increase on the 2010 total of 13,684.
James Murray, Event Director commented: The feedback we have received so far about this year's show has been overwhelmingly positive. Despite tough economic trading conditions, UK agents were out in force alongside pavilions from all the major wine producing nations, as well as exciting emerging markets. Lebanon, India and Russia reported positive business leads and gave a feeling of optimism for the coming months. Whilst we're pleased that we have seen a slight increase in the visitor numbers this year, it is the quality of those visiting that is key to our exhibitors, and many have reported their most successful show for many years.
Matthew Dickinson, Commercial Director, Thierry's: Thierry's had a truly exciting trade fair this year in sponsoring the Access Zone. This allowed us to work on some really innovative communication projects with Vrazon and Brintex and we were delighted with both the number and quality of visitors, both real and virtual!
Giles Cooke MW, Marketing Director, Alliance Wine: As ever, there were very high quality attendees over the course of the three days. We have had plenty of very constructive meetings with lots of results in the bag.
Jeremy Rockett, Marketing Director, Gonzalez Byass: We have had some very high quality journalists, customers and other visitors. Every year opportunities come out of the Fair that we could never predict.
Su Birch, CEO, Wines of South Africa: Our new format has proved very successful and we have had a steady stream of people tasting, including media and buyers. Brintex did a great job as ever.

FRANCE 24 - Wine tasting - is London taking the lead?
France is being overshadowed in a field that has always been a source of national pride: the business of wine-tasting. An increasing number of professionals are now being trained at London's Wine and Spirits Education Trust. This school is shaping the palate of future sommeliers, making French experts and wholesalers concerned that France could lose its share of the market.
Urban Wine - BBC report
When asked to think of the wine-producing areas of the world, South London probably won't be the first place you think of. But a group of neighbours there has teamed up to create a cheeky little vintage made entirely from grapes grown in their back gardens and allotments. Apparently the urban environment can help grow a grape perfect for bottling. They call their wine, Chateau Tooting. My website:

The Success of English Wine Making in Kent
I am searching for English Wine Kent in today's video. Publicity lady, Vikki Eames, escorts me around Biddenden Vineyard explaining the wine maker's remarkable achievements and curious past.
Originally home to a 40 acre apple orchard, the Barnes family started to consider diversifying the farm in the late 1960s as apple prices began to decline. After listening to a feature on the BBC’s Woman’s Hour programme about English vineyards being replanted, Mrs. Barnes was inspired to turn to viticulture. In 1969, one third of an acre of vines was planted and Biddenden Vineyards was born.

Ted Baker of Last Drop Wine Shop in London
TED BAKER OF LAST DROP WINE SHOP IN LONDON
- Classification: Beer, Wine and Spirit (Retail)
- Business Description: A small friendly wine shop with very knowledgeable staff.
- Address: 492 Kings Road, West Brompton, London, SW10 0LE
- Shop opening times: Monday to Saturday 10am-7pm
- Web: lastdropwines.com
The principal advantages of buying wine form an independent wine merchant is the knowledgeable staff, in this case the owner Ted Baker an enthusiastic and passionate man.
Also this shop offers a range of wines the bigger players cannot. We're not simply talking about the number of wines stocked; we're talking about the mixture of small-scale, of-the-beaten track, artisan producers alongside low-volume, super-medium classics from those well established and well-earned reputations.
I highly recommend strike up a relationship with Ted Baker, the more information that you can give to him about what you like to drink the best - including price, variety, country, style, loves and hates - the closer he likely will find you something that really stacks up, and so the road to better drinking begins.
