Apostle Islands National Lakeshore - Winter 2014
Wherein I speak into the wind.
For the first time in many years, the ice on the south shore of Lake Superior is safe enough to walk out to the frozen Mainland Sea Caves at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.
It's not mentioned in the video, but on the way back from the lakeshore, we drove through Bayfield and I was very tempted to drive across the ice bridge to Madeline Island. Since nothing in Bayfield looked open, we had very little confidence that anything on Madeline Island would be open. South Shore Brewery in Ashland, WI had some really great options though.
The sound on this is not so great in parts, which is another reason I'm making sure to add captions to my videos.
Ice access was closed for the season on 3/16/2014.

Northland College - Ways To Fill Your Free Time On Campus
- If you are looking to mingle with classmates and locals, the go to joint any night of the week is South Shore Brewery and the Deep Water Grille (“the Deep”) which share space in the same building on Main Street in Ashland. There is no better place to drink a small batch, hoppy as Hell craft beer and order a gluten free pizza. Events of the intellectual sort are hosted, such as inviting guest scientific speakers and many gather here to watch sporting events on TV during hockey and football season. Either way, you won’t leave hungry, sober, or unhappy! Are you a slave to the groove? One of the best venues I have had the pleasure of getting down in is a short distance from Northland’s campus down a dusty road between Washburn and Bayfield, the neighboring towns. Big Top Chautauqua is a large canvas tent which has housed everyone from local folk bands to Peter Frampton, Keb Mo, Trampled by Turtles, Charlie Parr, and Elephant Revival. There is nothing quite like listening to bluegrass and having a crisp view of the night sky in between sets.
Barley for beer production grows in Wisconsin
Barley used for beer production is on the rise in Wisconsin. Dan Carey, brewmaster and co-founder of New Glarus Brewing Co., plans to buy the barley from 80 acres near Monroe while other plots are dotted throughout the state and used by other breweries like Lake Front in Milwaukee and South Shore in Ashland.

Live Travel News: Carnival Ends European Sailings Plus FAA Refuses to Regulate Seat Size on Planes! Costs cruises is adding 7 new cruise ships in the next 7 years to it overall fleet. Carnival will not sail in europe for the foreseeable future. It will leave the area in the hands of it's other lines namely Cunard, Holland America, Princess, P and O, Costa and Aida. The FAA has decided it does not need to regulate seat sizes on jet planes as they are fine the way they are. All jets must be evacuated in 90 seconds in an emergency. The FAA receives simulations from the aircraft manufacturers which also select the volunteers and video the simulations. No children, infirmed people, obese people or elderly people are used as volunteers for the simulations. Only adults are used. In 1980 the obesity rate in the USA was 15%, today it is 38%. 45% of all adults were overweight in 1960 today 70% are overweight. Seat pitch in 1970 was averaging 35 inches, today Spirit Airlines has a 29 inch pitch. Yuck...

The radio show Calling All Cars hired LAPD radio dispacher Jesse Rosenquist to be the voice of the dispatcher. Rosenquist was already famous because home radios could tune into early police radio frequencies. As the first police radio dispatcher presented to the public ear, his was the voice that actors went to when called upon for a radio dispatcher role.
The iconic television series Dragnet, with LAPD Detective Joe Friday as the primary character, was the first major media representation of the department. Real LAPD operations inspired Jack Webb to create the series and close cooperation with department officers let him make it as realistic as possible, including authentic police equipment and sound recording on-site at the police station.
Due to Dragnet's popularity, LAPD Chief Parker became, after J. Edgar Hoover, the most well known and respected law enforcement official in the nation. In the 1960s, when the LAPD under Chief Thomas Reddin expanded its community relations division and began efforts to reach out to the African-American community, Dragnet followed suit with more emphasis on internal affairs and community policing than solving crimes, the show's previous mainstay.
Several prominent representations of the LAPD and its officers in television and film include Adam-12, Blue Streak, Blue Thunder, Boomtown, The Closer, Colors, Crash, Columbo, Dark Blue, Die Hard, End of Watch, Heat, Hollywood Homicide, Hunter, Internal Affairs, Jackie Brown, L.A. Confidential, Lakeview Terrace, Law & Order: Los Angeles, Life, Numb3rs, The Shield, Southland, Speed, Street Kings, SWAT, Training Day and the Lethal Weapon, Rush Hour and Terminator film series. The LAPD is also featured in the video games Midnight Club II, Midnight Club: Los Angeles, L.A. Noire and Call of Juarez: The Cartel.
The LAPD has also been the subject of numerous novels. Elizabeth Linington used the department as her backdrop in three different series written under three different names, perhaps the most popular being those novel featuring Det. Lt. Luis Mendoza, who was introduced in the Edgar-nominated Case Pending. Joseph Wambaugh, the son of a Pittsburgh policeman, spent fourteen years in the department, using his background to write novels with authentic fictional depictions of life in the LAPD. Wambaugh also created the Emmy-winning TV anthology series Police Story. Wambaugh was also a major influence on James Ellroy, who wrote several novels about the Department set during the 1940s and 1950s, the most famous of which are probably The Black Dahlia, fictionalizing the LAPD's most famous cold case, and L.A. Confidential, which was made into a film of the same name. Both the novel and the film chronicled mass-murder and corruption inside and outside the force during the Parker era. Critic Roger Ebert indicates that the film's characters (from the 1950s) represent the choices ahead for the LAPD: assisting Hollywood limelight, aggressive policing with relaxed ethics, and a straight arrow approach.
