Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States, North America
Pittsburgh is the seat of Allegheny County and with a population of 307,484 is the second-largest city in the U.S. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. With a metropolitan CSA population of 2,661,369 it is the largest in both the Ohio Valley and Appalachia and the 22nd-largest in the U.S. Pittsburgh is known as both the Steel City for its more than 300 related businesses and the City of Bridges for its world record 446 bridges. The city also features 29 skyscrapers, two inclined railways, a pre-revolutionary fortification, and the source of the Ohio at the confluence of the Monongahela and Allegheny. This vital link of the Atlantic coast and the Mid-west cuts through the mineral-rich Alleghenies and made the Pittsburgh area coveted by the French and British empires, Virginia, Whiskey Rebels, Civil War raiders and media networks. Legendary for its steel, Pittsburgh also led innovations and industries in aluminum, glass, shipbuilding, petroleum, foods, appliances, sports, transport, computing, retail, autos and electronics. This creative wealth placed Pittsburgh third (after New York City and Chicago) in corporate headquarter jobs for much of the 20th century, second only to New York in bank assets with more stockholders per capital than any other U.S. city. America's 1980s shift from heavy industry to a service economy laid-off millions from the area's sprawling steel mills and electronics/appliances factories. The diaspora of blue collar workers was joined by thousands of white collar employees when multi-billion dollar corporate raids relocated the longtime Pittsburgh-based world headquarters of Gulf Oil, Sunbeam, Rockwell and Westinghouse. This status as a world industrial and banking center, its melting pot of industrial immigrant workers, and top 10 rank among the largest cities in the U.S. until 1950 and metros until 1980 has left the region with a plethora of internationally-regarded museums, medical centers, parks, research infrastructure, libraries and a vibrantly diverse cultural district. These legacies have helped Pittsburgh win first place as America's most livable city by Places Rated Almanac, Forbes, and The Economist while inspiring National Geographic and Today to name the city a top world destination. More tangibly, the area has added 3,304 hotel rooms since 2004 and boasts higher occupancy than 11 comparable cities such as Philadelphia and Baltimore. Google, Intel and Apple are among 1,600 tech firms generating $10.8 billion in annual Pittsburgh payrolls. Since the 1980s the city has also served as national headquarters for both federal cyber defense and robotics. The area boasts 31 non-profit universities and colleges including seven venerable universities in the city, with the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon as national leaders in R&D expenditures spurring multiple startups annually. The nation's fifth-largest bank, 9 Fortune 500s and six of the top 300 US law firms make their global headquarters in the Pittsburgh area, while RAND, BNYMellon, Nova Chemicals, Bayer, FedEx and GSK have large regional bases that helped Pittsburgh become the sixth best metro for U.S. job growth despite the global recession. Area retail and housing have also grown despite the subprime crisis with the multi-million dollar SouthSide Works, Bakery Square, and Washington's Landing repurposing former industrial sites. Pittsburgh is a leader in LEED technology, with 60 total and 10 of the world's first green buildings, including downtown's convention center, even as Shell and Chevron have invested billions in the area's energy renaissance with Marcellus shale. A renaissance of Pittsburgh's 115 year old film industry that boasts the world's first movie theater has grown from the long running 3R Film Festival to an influx of major productions including Disney and Paramount offices with the largest sound stage outside Los Angeles and New York. According to the United States Census Bureau, Pittsburgh has a total area of 58.3 square miles (151 km2), of which 55.6 square miles (144 km2) is land and 2.8 square miles (7.3 km2) (or 4.75%) is water.

A Brief History
South Side, a neighborhood located across from downtown Pittsburgh, is divided into two sub-neighborhoods, South Side Flats and South Side Slopes. South Side has a business district along East Carson Street. The neighborhood is also home to almost 100 bars and pubs, making it a well-known neighborhood to visit for a fun night out. The South Side was originally known as the village of Birmingham, annexed to Pittsburgh in 1872. It was settled by German and Eastern European immigrants who came to Pittsburgh to work.
The immigrants who came to work on the South Side made it a central place for industry, including the Jones and Laughlin Steel Company, which closed in the 1980s and redeveloped. There’s also the 1906 completion of the construction of the Pittsburgh Terminal Properties, which made it the largest warehouse between New York and Chicago.
Fun Facts
Did you know Dr. Nathaniel Bedford planned a large part of Birmingham before it was named South Side. He named streets after his friends and family—this is why South Siders will see Jane Street, Sarah Street and Carson Street. The South Side flats sub-neighborhood has one of the largest Victorian main streets in the United States. Some of the South Side streets are so steep that actual staircases serve as the street. Also, as many Pittsburghers know, South Side has some of the tightest parking spaces in the city.

South Side, Pittsburgh Community and Real Estate
South of the Monongahela River waterfront, and just across the river from downtown Pittsburgh, is the desirable neighborhood of South Side. Made up of two separate sub neighborhoods, the South Side Slopes and the South Side Flats, South Side is known know for its nightlife, its tremendous character, and its revitalized commercial district.
Once a run-down industrial area, South Side -- like many neighborhoods in the greater Pittsburgh region -- has undergone an impressive transformation since the 1980s. Today, this area has become a prime destination for restaurants, nightlife, and shopping. One particularly well known area is South Side Works, a collection of restaurants and shops located on the site of a former steel mill. Here you can have dinner at the Cheesecake Factory, check out a movie in the brand new cinema, or embark on a pub crawl through the many bars and clubs along East Carson Street.
The popularity of South Side is enhanced by its easy accessibility via public transit. The area is served by several bus lines as well as the light rail system, making it a breeze for commuters to get to work in downtown Pittsburgh, as well as for students who live downtown to visit South Side for its entertainment and nightlife.
Real estate in South Side has risen dramatically in value in recent years as its popularity has increased. Fortunately, the charm of the original homes has not been lost to history. The neighborhood known as South Side Flats features one of the largest collections of original Victorian homes along a main street that you can find anywhere in the United States. In fact, the entire length of East Carson Street is designated as a national historic district. This means that if you are lucky enough to own a home here, there are very strict rules as to what can and cannot be done to the exterior of the home. Elsewhere in the Flats, one can find street after street of charming row homes, as well as some newer condominiums and apartments. Like the homes themselves, the residents of South Side are an eclectic mixture of those who have lived here for generations, and those who are just discovering the charms of this appealing neighborhood.
South Side is a place where people want to be, and where you can easily get to wherever you are headed. Who knows? Maybe you’ll find a place here to call home.

Street Fight in Pittsburgh South Side
Argument happens outside of Jacks bar in Pittsburgh South Side leading to a bloody street brawl, stopping heavy South Side traffic and Pittsburgh PD showing up towards the end.
You can hear me and others yelling and saying evidence only cause we didn't want fighters to turn on us. While recording, the only moment me and other spectators got pissed during the fight was when a cute sister of one of the fighters was being trampled in the street. We dragged her out of the fight but my phone was knocked out of my hands for about 5 seconds.

South Side Flats Cruise 1
Pittsburgh's South Side Flats is a neighborhood rich in history, architecture, and diversity. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, people came from all over the world to live there. Today, its massive steel mill is gone but the neighborhood is growing because of its great bars, restaurants, and shops. Its main street is Carson Street, where the historic business district now thrives.
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (Duquesne Incline) HD footage
So we were on our way to Cedar Point and the trip took us past Pittsburgh, a city I have been to on 2 prior occasions, and enjoyed.
It was rush hour so we decided to get off the roads a couple hours and see a little because Matt has never been so I wanted to show him. In this video we just went to the historic Duquesne Incline and took a ride on it and it is in this video and also a little footage from driving the streets of Pittsburgh. Hope everyone will enjoy this and if you have never been there it is very nice. Thee forst time I went there was to go to the Andy Warhol Art Museum and that was in the 90's I think so it was nice to see Pittsburgh once again....
I drove through the WORST parts of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This is what I saw.
What is happening in America? Pittsburgh suburbs are a total wasteland!
The last stop on our road trip 2019/2020 was in the city of Pittsburgh. We took I-79 south through pretty rolling Pennsylvania countryside, which had been recently snowed upon. However, this winter has been an unusually warm one in this region, and the temperature was a balmy 40 degrees.
We pulled into Pittsburgh on Thursday, January 9, 2020 at 2 in the afternoon.
In today’s video, we’ll give you a brief rundown on the city of Pittsburgh, share a few insights and a couple of experiences. Then, we’ll take you to a Pittsburgh suburb, which was perhaps the absolute worst place I’ve ever seen in person.
Pittsburgh is located at the convergance of the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio Rivers. The whole Pittsburgh metro area is surrounded by hills. The city made it name in the steel industry, hence the big steel bridges and the city’s football team, the Steelers.
Pittsburgh is a very poor city, and we’ll get a look at that in a minute. But it has SOME rich people. Particularly in the Shadyside and North Squirrel Hill neighborhoods. Here’s North Squirrel Hill. This is the richest neighborhood in Pittsburgh where residents earn about $100,000 a year on average, and homes cost about $500,000.
This is shadyside, a modern chic neighborhood with upscale shopping and dining. Women wear their yoga pants to lunch here, even in foot deep snow.
The food is decent. I didn’t get a chance to try the Pittsburgh version of the Cheesesteak, but I DID have perhaps the best sandwich I’ve ever had at a place called Pork and Beans downtown. It was called their classic, and was composed of primarily beef brisket and cheese. I didn’t think to take a picture of it until it was gone.
I also ran into a guy who wore WAY too much cologne who I swore is on the Pittsburgh Steelers. I should have asked him.
Of course we didn’t come here to walk around downtown. We came to see the WORST part of town. I had originally planned to film two northeast pittsburgh slums - areas called Homewood and Larimer, which I had heard resemble the gutted out areas we had seen in other dying rust belt communities.
But in downtown, I asked a friendly bartender in what she thought of Homewood and Larimer. She told me if I REALLY wanted to see the WORST areas of Pittsburgh, I needed to see the south side. She said it was one of the most dangerous cities in the country - a place called McKeesport.
Whenever there’s a shooting or a crime or all the cops go somewhere, it’s in McKeesport, she said.
So the next day, we went off to Mckeesport to see what all the fuss was about.
McKeesport is a tiny city that’s only about 10 miles south of Pittsburgh, but because the region is so hilly, getting there takes nearly 30 minutes on windy, sad, beaten up roads.
Just like every other former steel town, McKeesport was hit hard when steel makers left the region. This city once had more than 50,000 people, but now, it has less than 20,000.
Here’s another cop. We saw 5 in the 20 minutes we spent driving around.
There are many other areas on Pittsburgh’s fringes like McKeesport - but not nearly so dangerous or destitute. This is another area 10 minutes from McKeesport on the city’s east side. Pittsburgh’s whole east side of pockmarked with crime and poor rundown neighborhoods.
We also visited the original ghetto hoods we had planned to visit. Here’s a look at Homewood and Larmer on Pittsburgh’s northeast side.
These places need help. They need a community leader to step up and do something or these places are going to disappear one day, as everyone either flees or dies.
These neighborhoods are just a small glimpse as to what it looks like when a city like Pittsburgh goes from a population of 700,000 to 300,000 in only about 60 years.
The rust belt tour was over. We had witnessed places like East St Louis, Lansing, Buffalo and Pittsburgh and how the loss of industry and a shrinking economy has made these cities sad, dangerous, empty and soulless. These places don’t look like America of the 1950s. They don’t even look like they should be in America at all.
As I pulled back into Raleigh, the following day, I was greeted by a muggy, party sunny sky, a far cry from the cold I had experienced for the past three weeks. But nowhere near as cold as it should have been. The green colors and overall positive vibes were welcome. It was nice to be home.

[Filmed November, 2012] These elevators run great but they need to maintain the cab and fixtures well. The panels and cab itself could use some maintenance, but other than that it is okay, the hotel is very nice on top of that, but the area.... thats a different story.
