The Shaker Museum at South Union in Logan Co., KY, shares the story of this southernmost Shaker community through architecture, crafts, song, and living history exhibits. Host Wes Berry talks with curator Tommy Hines and operations manager Kaelin Vernon about Shaker ways and the impact of the Civil War on their community.

The South Union Shaker Village is a great place to see some amazing craftsmanship. I wanted to go there to see some of the furniture built by the shakers. They were true craftsman and their skills were reflected in the pieces on display there.

Shaker Museum at South Union
Just 10 minutes from Bowling Green on highway 68 / 80 is a place to visit and learn firsthand about the Shaker way of life. Shaker Museum at South Union has several original buildings that have been restored and now house a fine museum of Shaker folklife and material culture. The Shaker Museum, found in the 40-room 1824 Centre House, is filled with scores of original artifacts exemplifying the Shakers fine craftsmanship. Oval boxes, baskets, Shaker silk and linen, early wooden tools as well as trestle tables, benches, chairs and other furnishings display the diversity of Shaker genius. Whats more, you can find many of these types of arts and crafts in their unique gift shop. Shaker Museum has many wonderful events throughout the year, and is open March through November, Monday through Saturday 9 to 5, and Sunday 1-5. In the winter they are open Tuesday through Saturday 10 to 4. Call or visit us online for more information.

Road trip to the charming Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill. Nearby, we hop aboard an authentic stern wheeler venturing through the Kentucky River palisades and passing under the 275 foot tall High Bridge (when it was built in 1877 it was the tallest railroad bridge in the world).

Delmar, a father of six, began making toys while teaching at a private school. Making toys was a way for his son to have something to occupy his time in the evenings. Although Delmar's skills are basically self-taught, both his father and grandfather liked to work with wood. He comments, Perhaps it's in our blood!
What began as a hobby in 1989 has grown into a full-time business. The Eby's toys are functional and are constructed completely with wood using very little hardware. Most of the wood used to construct their toys is obtained locally, with the exception of cedar and mahogany. Their items are finished with a natural oil that is non-toxic.
The Ebys are members of the Kentucky Craft Marketing Program.

Migratory Songbirds | Kentucky Life | KET
This Kentucky Life feature on Migratory Songbirds at Red River Gorge recently won a 2012 Emmy Award from the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
Many populations of migratory songbirds are in decline because of habitat loss, and bird banding data is used to discover migration patterns and survival rates. Host Dave Shuffett joins biologists at the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission to help net and band songbirds in the Red River Gorge and Natural Bridge State Resort Park in Powell County.
There were 751 total Ohio Valley Regional Emmy Award entries this year, a record number, and only 291 received nominations. Nineteen KET productions and programs were nominated for an Emmy Award. This segment was produced by Brandon Wickey.
