Portsmouth is a port city and naval base on England’s south coast, mostly spread across Portsea Island. It’s known for its maritime heritage and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. The dockyard is home to the interactive National Museum of the Royal Navy, the wooden warship HMS Victory, where Nelson died in the Battle of Trafalgar, and HMS Warrior 1860. The Tudor ship Mary Rose is also conserved in a dockyard museum.
Portsmouth is a port city in Hampshire, England, mainly on Portsea Island, 70 miles (110 km) south-west of London and 19 miles (31 km) south-east of Southampton. The city of Portsmouth forms part of the South Hampshire built-up area, which also covers Southampton and the towns of Havant, Waterlooville, Eastleigh, Fareham, and Gosport.
Portsmouth is one of the world's best known ports. HMNB Portsmouth is considered to be the home of the Royal Navy and is home to two-thirds of the UK's surface fleet. The city is home to some famous ships, including HMS Warrior, the Tudor carrack Mary Rose and Horatio Nelson's flagship, HMS Victory (the world's oldest naval ship still in commission). The former HMS Vernon naval shore establishment has been redeveloped as a retail park known as Gunwharf Quays. Portsmouth is among the few British cities with two cathedrals: the Anglican Cathedral of St Thomas and the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St John the Evangelist. The waterfront and Portsmouth Harbour are dominated by the Spinnaker Tower, one of the United Kingdom's tallest structures at 560 feet (170 m). Nearby Southsea is a seaside resort with a pier amusement park and medieval castle.
Portsmouth F.C., the city's professional football club, play their home games at Fratton Park. The city has several mainline railway stations that connect to London Waterloo amongst other lines in southern England. Portsmouth International Port is a commercial cruise ship and ferry port for international destinations. The port is the second busiest in the United Kingdom after Dover, handling around three million passengers a year. The city formerly had its own airport, Portsmouth Airport, until its closure in 1973. The University of Portsmouth enrols 23,000 students and is ranked among the world's best modern universities. Portsmouth is also the birthplace of author Charles Dickens and engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Winds of up to 90mph left thousands without power and forced airlines to divert flights scheduled to land at Gatwick Airport. The gales were so strong they blew trees onto power lines in Scotland and caused disruption to ferries, railways and roads. misery is expected after the Met Office issued four rain and wind warnings in north-western Scotland and most of England and Wales. Scotland will continue to be hit with blistering winds of 60mph to 70mph from Storm Brendon with forecasters predicting that up to Up to 6cm (2in) of snow could fall on higher ground. However, rain from the storm will also cause blustery conditions for England and Wales on Tuesday and Wednesday. Southwesterly winds will gust to 40 to 50 mph quite widely inland with some coastal areas expected to be hit by winds of 70mph Outbreaks of rain will develop on Tuesday afternoon and continue into Wednesday morning with some areas expected to see 30mm to 40mm. Met Office spokesman Oli Claydon said the high winds and rain could lead to ‘unpleasant’ travelling conditions and cause disruption to roads, trains and ferries. He said: ‘We are looking at gusts of 40mph to 50mph with exposed coasts and the tops of hills seeing 60mph and maybe even up to 70mph. ‘With that there’s also going to be some rain, making conditions quite unpleasant. ‘It’s certainly going to be unpleasant driving conditions and could lead to disruption across many travel networks.’ Storm Brendan moved into the UK around rush hour on Monday evening after lashing areas of Ireland with winds gusting over 80mph. Around 48,000 homes and businesses were without power on Monday afternoon and there were also outages in parts of Northern Ireland. Seven flights to Gatwick Airport were diverted to other locations across the UK overnight after gales in excess of 40mph struck the area on Monday. In the Western Isles, all schools in Uist and Barra are closed and all bus services have been cancelled. Seven flood warnings and 79 alerts issued by the Environment Agency remained in place on Tuesday morning. The strongest winds recorded on Monday were 87mph on South Uist in the Outer Hebrides, and a 76mph gust in Capel Curig, north west Wales. Yesterday a trampoline was blown onto the M7 in Limmerick, blocking two lanes as motorists were forced to bypass the metal frame. A second rogue trampoline caused train delays after landing on the train tracks at Finaghy. Gusts also toppled a lorry on the A704 near Breich Crossroads and a dead dolphin was washed up along the shore near Chisel Beach in huge waves whipped up by wind.
