Places to see in ( London - UK ) Southwark Bridge
Southwark Bridge is an arch bridge in London, England, for traffic linking the district of Southwark and the City across the River Thames. Southwark Bridge has the lowest traffic utilisation of any bridge in central London.
At the north-west side is Vintners Court, a 1990s office block which has a classical facade of columns and pediment; this was developed on the site owned by the Worshipful Company of Vintners whose Hall is behind it on Upper Thames Street. The south end is near the Tate Modern, the Clink Prison Museum, the Globe Theatre, and the Financial Times and Ofcom buildings. Below the Southwark Bridge on the south side are some old steps, which were once used by Thames watermen as a place to moor their boats and wait for customers. Below the Southwark Bridge on the south side is a pedestrian tunnel, part of the Queen's Walk Embankment, containing a frieze depicting the Thames frost fairs.
Southwark Bridge appears in many films, including Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007). The cream painted houses on the south side of the Southwark Bridge , Anchor Terrace, just after the FT building, were used for the exterior shots of the shared house in This Life.

London walk: Borough Market, Southwark Cathedral, Golden Hinde, Clink Street, London Bridge, skyline
London walk: Borough Market, Southwark Cathedral, Golden Hinde, Clink Street, London Bridge
30-minute walk
Join me during a break between the storms in London when I walk around the sumptuous, glorious, fabulous stalls of Borough Market – and try not to dribble as I people dodge trying to get a peek at all the food stuff on offer. Cheeses, chocolates, cakes, breads, olives, spices, fruit, vegetables, all manner of hot food prepared on the spot – it really is one of London’s top markets for a reason. Mmmmm…
As the rain cleared unexpectedly, I took the opportunity to skirt around Southwark Cathedral heading towards the Golden Hinde, stopping for awhile to enjoy the views of the City of London skyline. From there I head along Clink Street past the Clink Prison Museum to take in another river view at Bankside. I hadn’t really planned this walk and the clouds were starting to build again, so I walked quite speedily back to Borough Market and up to London Bridge to get a good view of the front of Southwark Cathedral, all the while under the gaze of the Shard. My final set of City skyline views take in Tower Bridge and Canary Wharf in the distance to the east.
An hour or so after I filmed, the most enormous storm crossed central London, topping up the flooded roads and pavements from the earlier deluge, so I was very lucky indeed to get a gap in the weather????

London Video Tour: Southwark
In this video tour, New York Habitat ( explores London's thriving Southwark district!
On the tour, David Hill will stop by Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, the Tate Modern, Borough Market, the Shard and more! All are part of London's Southwark district, an amazing neighborhood that mixes the old with the new! Southwark stretches roughly from Tower Bridge and Tower Bridge Road in the east to Blackfriars Bridge and Blackfriars Road in the west, and from the banks of the River Thames in the north to Elephant Castle in the south.
Bankside & Shakespeare's Globe Theatre
The tour starts in Bankside on the southern bank of the River Thames. In Elizabethan times, Bankside was known for its many playhouses, such as the Rose, the Swan and the Globe Theater. However, they were closed down by the Puritans in 1642. The best known of all these playhouses, the Globe Theatre, was rebuilt as Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in 1997. Be sure to check out the reconstruction and catch a play!
Tate Modern
Right next to Shakespeare's Globe Theater is the Tate Modern: London's modern art gallery. The museum has free entry, and is housed in an impressive building that used to be a power station. The museum is ideally located right on the southern bank of the River Thames, so if you're a fan of contemporary art be sure to pay the Tate Modern a visit!
The Clink Prison Museum
This museum was built on the site of the Clink prison, and is thought to be one of the oldest prisons in England. The museum is filled with artifacts dating back to 1144 and visitors get to read and hear all about the life of the inmates. There are also ancient torture devices and prison cells to peruse.
It's clear that life in a medieval London prison wasn't very comfortable! Luckily times have changed. London is simply filled with wonderful vacation rental apartments where you can relax and feel at home during your visit to the city (
Borough Market
Borough Market near the London Bridge is one of the oldest food markets in London. It's open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and offers anything from fruit and vegetables to meats, cheeses and breads. It's one of the best farmer's markets in the city of London, and that's saying something considering the number of markets in the area!
The Shard
The Shard is one of the newest additions to the skyline of London, and is located near Tower Bridge. The tower was built in 2012 and is about 306 meters (1,004 feet) high, which makes it the tallest building in the EU. There's a viewing platform on the 72nd floor that offers absolutely spectacular views of the surrounding city!
Southwark Wharves & Hay's Galleria
A trading hub for centuries, the wharves of Southwark have been converted into shops, restaurants, apartments and more. A great example of this renovation is Hay's Galleria: a former warehouse and wharf that is now a beautiful shopping center. Besides shopping, you can also choose to sit and enjoy the waterside views at one of the many cafes or restaurants in and around the galleria.
Thames Clippers
Taking a boat across the Thames River is a great way to travel around London and take in the sights. Thames Clippers offers waterbus services across the city, and allows you to hop on and off easily at different locations.
We hope you've enjoyed this tour of London's Southwark neighborhood! Don't forget to check out our blog for more information about the area. Did we miss any of your favorite spots? Let us know in the comments below!

Thames Path London from Blackfriars to Southwark Bridge and Back
A short walk along London's River Thames (pronounced 'Tems') from Blackfriars Bridge to Southwark bridge, and back again along the opposite bank. We pass The City of London School, St Paul's Cathedral, the Millennium Footbridge, the Vintners Company, Shakespeare's Globe theatre and the Tate Modern art gallery. You can do this walk within an hour, or much longer if you want to stop to visit some of the sights along the way.

A Walk Through the City of London from Barbican to London Bridge, England - 14th June, 2014
This film features a walk through the City of London, starting at the Barbican Estate and finishing at the Southwark side of London Bridge. It highlights the varied architecture of the city including the 1960s brutalist buildings of the Barbican Estate, to the high-tech glass skyscrapers and historic gothic, regency and classic buildings, monuments and statues. Part of the film has been made on the high level walkways which stem from the Barbican estate, allowing an elevated view of the surroundings. From London Walls the film goes to street level. If you are visiting London and would like to see the sights for yourself, the best way is to walk, rather than take public transport. This walk is one I would definitely recommend.
In the film, the following sights, streets and features are highlighted: Beech Street Tunnel, Cromwell Place, Cromwell Tower, The Barbican Centre, Lakeside Terrace, Gilbert House, Barbican Highwalks, Silk Street, Gilbert Bridge, City of London School for Girls, Lauderdale Place, Defoe House, Willoughby House, Andrewes House, Moor House, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Andrewes Highwalk, Speed House, St. Giles Cripplegate, Tower 42, The Leadenhall Building (Cheesegrater), The Shard, The Gherkin, 1 Coleman Street, 40 Basinghall Street, City Place House, 125 London Wall, Alban Highwalk, Wood Street, 88 Wood Street, London Wall, City of London Police Headquarters, The Tower of St. Alban's, Gresham Street, St. Lawrence Jewry Church, Guildhall Library, London Guildhall, Guildhall Art Gallery, Guildhall Buildings, Mayor's & City of London Court, Basinghall Street, Bank of China, Bank of England, Mansion House, Lombard Street, Royal Exchange, Royal Fusiliers' War Memorial, J.H. Greathead statue, Cornhill, St. Michael's Church, Leadenhall Street, Gracechurch Street, Bishopgate Street, St. Andrew Undershaft Church, Whittington Avenue, Leadenhall Market, The Walkie Talkie, Fenchurch Street, Monument to the Great Fire of London (The Monument), Eastcheap, St. Magnus the Martyr Church, Adelaide House, Lower Thames Street (A3211), Fishmongers' Hall, Tower Bridge, The River Thames, HMS Belfast, 1 London Bridge, London Bridge (A3) and Southwark Needle.
