Virginia Cries
Stories of Virginia's Civil War Soldiers and the families that they left behind. These stories are dramatizations of events in the lives of real people. Including: Six brothers from Carroll County who survived wounds and imprisonment made it back home, Wife of Sailor's Creek is about a country doctor who left for war not knowing his wife would be faced with a major battle when soldiers would take over her home. The Beat of the Drumsis about Stephen Melton from Carroll County who enlisted in his early fifties with his sons. Stephen was promoted to regimental drum major and his son Ivey would take his place as the company drummer. The Winds of Changetells of two life long friends Leroy Leonard and James McKenzie from Grayson County who would find themselves in dire circumstances. Leroy was captured and taken to Point Lookout and James would find himself in a state of sickness and heartbreak. There are many more stories and pictures of actual battlegrounds and of the people who fought there.Book by Joyce Bowers McKenzie

Beaver Dam Creek Trail -- Hillsville, VA
Took a stroll along the Beaver Dam Creek Trail starting in downtown Hillsville, VA. Trail is about two miles in length. Party paved and handicap acces. In my opinion, the trail should have an 'easy' rating since it's mostly level with only two or three small upgrades. Footing on the newer upper end of the trail is ground up pavement to make gravel. The pavement stones are fairly large in places making walking a little harder than normal. Just off the trail is Virginia's last remaining large white pines. Animals that can be seen from trail include: Bear, deer, turkey, many birds & woodpeckers, beavers, fox, cows, horses, squirrels, and many others.

The Big Survey Wildlife Management Area is located right in the middle of Wythe County, just south of the town of Wytheville, in southwestern Virginia. Several mountains make up this WMA. The High Rocks are a massive quartzite rock outcropping along the ridge of Sand Mountain. There is an unblazed trail to High Rocks leading from the eastern parking lot off State Highway 640. The trail is just a little over 1 mile (one way) with just over 500 feet in elevation gain to reach the rocks. High Rocks offers some spectacular views of Wytheville and the surrounding area. Thanks for watching!
