2014 Festival of Trees Big Stone Gap
19th Annual Festival of Trees
Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park
C. Bascom Slemp, the driving force behind the development of the Museum. Mr. Slemp served as the personal secretary to President Calvin Coolidge. In 1923, a group form the Electrical League and the D.C. public schools approached him with an idea for a national Christmas Tree to be erected on the White House Lawn. Mr. Slemp took the idea to the First Lady and a tradition was born. To honor C. Bascom Slemp's part in this American tradition and to help celebrate the holidays , the Southwest Virginia Museum created the Festival of Trees . With this event we hopet to link our present to our past and to help keep long-standing holiday traditions alive

37 Virginia State Park Challenge: #35 SW VA Historical Museum
Nothing too thrilling here, but the Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park is on the challenge. So I went. This museum is dedicated to Appalachia in SW Virginia, its foundation, history, and people. Apologies in advance as I was reading and the camera view is too high at some points.
Note: I said second to last park in the video. I'm saving Grayson Highlands for last as it is an amazing state park!

These ancient American relics remain unexplained.
A centuries-old stone wall, stretching for miles; enormous pictures scratched into the ground of a desert; rocks arranged in a circle. You know what these landmarks are, right?
Guess again. Instead of the Great Wall of China or Stonehenge, these are all ancient American ruins and landmarks. The United States is a relative newcomer to the world stage, but there have been people long living on this continent, and they’ve left traces of their presence just as mysterious as those found in other countries.

The Current Fantasy:
Earl Dotter began his photographic career after completing his studies at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. In 1968 he joined VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) and was assigned to the Cumberland Plateau Region of Tennessee. Over time, he was welcomed into the homes of coal mining families. He came to know and respect their culture and struggles — a relationship that continues to this day. After his VISTA assignment concluded, he remained in the area to photograph the rank-and-file movement to reform the United Mine Workers Union, then under the corrupt leadership of Tony Boyle.
In 1972 he was invited to join the staff of the reformers’ newspaper, The Miner’s Voice, and subsequently became the photographer for the campaign to unseat Boyle, called “Miners for Democracy.” When the election effort proved successful, Dotter went to work for the UMWA Journal, where he remained until 1977.
Throughout the 1980′s, Dotter photographed a wide array of occupational subjects. His photography has consistently been given life and texture by shooting not just the work, but the whole worker and his or her life on the job, at home, and in the community. Over the years, his subjects have expanded from an emphasis on occupational health and safety to include environmental hazards to public health. The evolution was only logical, since the adverse conditions which first affect people on the job, as they take the “first hit” from exposure to carcinogens, toxins, and industrial waste, eventually make their way out of the worksite and into the air and water of the surrounding environment.
In the Spring of 1996, he began the tour of his exhibit, THE QUIET SICKNESS: A Photographic Chronicle of Hazardous Work in America. After initial exhibits in Washington, DC and at the main branch of the Cincinnati Public Library, the photography exhibit with over 100 works began a tour of the six New England states, sponsored by the Harvard School of Public Health’s Occupational Health Program. AIHA Press published the book of the same name as the exhibit in the Spring of 1998.
In 1999 he was appointed without stipend to the Visiting Scholars Program at the HSPH. The exhibit, “APPALACHIAN CHRONICLE, 1969-1999: The Photographs of Earl Dotter,” began its initial showing at The University of Virginia’s Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon in connection with the annual meeting of the Appalachian Studies Association. Subsequently the exhibit has moved to the Appalshop Gallery in Whitesburg, Kentucky and Mountain Empire Community College in Big Stone Gap, Virginia.
Earl Dotter is the recipient of the Josephine Patterson Albright Fellowship in Photography for the year 2000 from The Alicia Patterson Foundation. His fellowship project title is: “COMMERCIAL FISHING, Our Most Perilous Trade.” The grant will provide support to document the hazards faced by commercial fishermen far offshore in the North Atlantic as well as in the hand harvesting fisheries along the New England Coast.

THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL
The Appalachian trail is by far the most famous hiking trail on the eastern side of the United States. Completing the Appalachian trail thru hike, meaning from one end to the other, is an ambitious goal. Nevertheless, those who complete it will not only have a vast amount of stories to tell and major bragging rights. After all, it’s 2,190 miles long and goes through 14 states. By the end, your feet will have walked up and down a grand total of 464,500 vertical feet. That’s like putting Mount Everest on the coast and hiking up to the summit and back down 8 times. Whether you’re hiking the Appalachian Trail from start to finish, trekking it in pieces, or taking an afternoon stroll somewhere along its long path you become part of this iconic trail.
THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL AT HARPER'S FERRY.
For this segment of “We See Here” we had 20 minutes to experience the Appalachian Trail. We allotted 10 minutes to run through Harper’s Ferry National Park museum, before heading out on the trail. That ten minute time-frame quickly became a half hour as the volunteer park ranger was determined to give us the entire history of Harper’s Ferry. Which, is significantly more important than I had originally expected. He is a great guy full of knowledge and the ability to tell history in an engaging way.
As we were about the only visitors to the national park that day, we were delighted when a lone visitor got wrangled in to accompany us in the comprehensive history lecture. That is when we made our quick getaway, expressing our gratitude for the information as we slipped out the front door.
MORE OF A STROLL THAN A HIKE
Up some stone steps we went, past the quaint but elaborately designed church, and to the sign that indicated we were officially on the Appalachian trail. After a quick picture, we walked with delighted pleasure knowing we were on the renowned trail. A short distance from the chapel is the famous Jefferson’s Rock. Just passed the rock, the trail turns to a well beaten, dirt, single track path. We went along it for about two hundred yards. If only the audible hum of the nearby highway could be turned off the location would be quite serene and peaceful, especially with the continuous melody of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers playing their eternal tunes. There is a sense of awe, knowing the historical figures that walked this wedge of land between the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers. These people have included founding fathers, ingenuitive thinkers, civil war soldiers and commanders, and at least 12,000 trekkers who have completed the whole trail since the 1930s. The region around Harper’s Ferry is replete with the footsteps of times continuous march.
WE SEE HERE WILL RETURN.
To say we “hiked” on the Appalachian trail would be a deplorable over-exaggeration. We had about 20 minutes to spend on the trail. Obviously not enough time to do any real tour of the hike. Nevertheless, it left a lasting impression. We were filled with the desire to return and actually put some miles on the soles of our shoes. Hopefully the next trip out east will result in such a dream being fulfilled.
WE SEE HERE TRIVIA.
The stumble at the very end of this video was not intentional. My four year old skater shoes have no tread on them and the rock was slicker than I thought. Moral of the story: always wear good hiking shoes when hiking.
