The American Legion World Series - 2015 Emmy® Nomination
The American Legion World Series is a special episode of Carl White's Life in the Carolinas, which first aired in syndication May 16, 2015.
In this episode, Carl takes us to Shelby,NC where he highlights the history, volunteers and the excitement of the American Legion World Series.
Every year more than 100,000 fans gather at the Keeter Stadium in Shelby. Only one team from each of the eight regions across the country is eligible to compete for the national championship.
The American Legion has a long history of community service programs. In 1925 they founded a youth based baseball league. Only a year later, the first American Legion World Series was held. Originally, these annual World Series playoffs were hosted at various cities across the country. Since 2011, the permanent home of the American Legion World Series has been in Shelby.
From the Commander's Reception, an exclusive dinner and program held prior to the games, to the last game of the series, between 600 and 700 people volunteer to help coordinate this great event. Some people volunteer for 4 hour shifts, others help out throughout the entire series.
Understandably, there is an integral connection between the American Legion World Series and America's veterans. Some of the volunteers and all of the officials are former military personnel or their families. Carl takes the opportunity to interview several veterans, who share some of their amazing stories of heroism with us.
The North Carolina National Guard partners with the American Legion to set up displays and provide support for the World Series. Current members as well as those who have retired from the Guard provide invaluable volunteer services to make the World Series a great success.
The American Legion World Series is about much more than baseball. It is an enormous event designed to pay tribute to those who have served to protect our nation. Patriotism is widespread throughout the series - from veterans parachuting onto the field to present the first ball, to the throwing of the first pitch, the singing of the national anthem, the displays, and the final fireworks.
Plan on visiting this extraordinary event, mixing patriotism with America's favorite pastime!
