There's cooking, eating, travelling around various cities in Europe - Berlin in Germany, Naples and Rome in Italy, plus the Vatican; Sofia, Varna, Plovdiv and elsewhere in Bulgaria; Lefkosia / Nicosia and much of Cyprus, Krakow in Poland, there's Malta too. Istanbul in Turkey just outside Europe too, and Egypt around Hurghada. Further afield there's a bit of South Africa and Latin America with the Mayan Riviera of Mexico and Rio de Janeiro, Paraty and Isla Grande in Brazil. There's even a bit of Northern Ireland and parts of England mixed in with the nonsense of East Anglia in a camper van with my daughters! A large-scale memorial monument. Axially symmetric monumental composition with input focus and vertical spatial dominance. The spatial design includes a main ceremonial path from the Tsar Liberator blvd. (northeast) and secondary alley - from Vasil Levski Blvd (northwest) and from Evlogi Georgiev(southeast). The dominant axis is oriented northeast-southwest. Vertical planning has been used at several levels and platforms with staircases in four directions. Flowers and low vegetation complete the aesthetic impact.

33 bulgarian tanks T-34 were sent along the 7000 soviet tanks and 600 000 soldiers from 5 countries.
Over 100 people die and more then 600 are wounded during the one month occupation of Prague.

Не е приемливо в суверенна държава паметник на чужда армия да е разположен по-високо и на по-централно място от националните символи; съществуващите пък в други държави паметници далеч не доминират в такава степен околния пейзаж и са издигнати преди всичко в памет на загиналите воини, докато в България Червената армия не е дала нито една жертва, освен около 150 съветски войници и офицери, загинали в края на октомври - началото на ноември 1944 г. в боевете при Кула срещу контраофанзива на германски войски, базирани на територията на Югославия. Загиналите в боевете и от раните са погребани в района на градското гробище на Видин в добре оформено и добре поддържано военно гробище, което е единственото СЪВЕТСКО ВОЕННО ГРОБИЩЕ в България, за разлика от много други гробни места на съветски военни, загинали в небойни, невоенни случаи на територията на България.
През 1993 г. скулпторът Любомир Далчев, участвал в създаването на паметника, пише писмо, в което отбелязва, че Паметникът на Съветската армия не трябва да се извисява в центъра на столицата, а да бъде преместен на по-скромно място.
Паметникът е създаден от колектив с ръководител скулпторът Иван Фунев с идеята да символизира
„признателността на българския народ към руските воини.
Автори архитекти са арх. Данко Митов, арх. Иван Васильов, арх. Любен Нейков и арх. Борис Капитанов.
Автори скулптори са Иван Фунев, проф. Любомир Далчев, Мара Георгиева, Васка Емануилова, Васил Зидаров и Петър Дойчинов.
Художник-график е Борис Ангелушев.

Monument of the Soviet Army is located on the main street in the town park. Depicts a soldier holding a submachine gun Shpagin (PPSh-41), with a height of more than 7 m., Made of white limestone. Behind it rises twice as tall pole with a red five-pointed tip. The locals call the monument the white soldier.

Buzludzha: A crumbling reminder of communism | The Economist
Buzludzha was once the futuristic, flying-saucer shaped headquarters of the Communist Party in Bulgaria, but it is now a semi-ruin after being left to rot.

This is Buzludzha, the former home of Bulgaria's Communist Party which lies 200 kilometers east of Sofia. It was built in 1981, at a time when the power of the communist regime seemed unshakable. Now it's crumbling. When it was first commissioned enormous effort was put into constructing the building. It was 15 million Levs, or $35 million today and five years in the making.
6,000 workers, including artists, sculptors, and soldiers from the Bulgarian army came together to construct this elegant monstrosity. Their aim? To create a building that would impress, inspire, and intimidate to make visible the might of the Communist Party. For some the marble and mosaics were a source of pride. For others it was a constant reminder of communisms firm grip on society.
Less than a decade after Buzludzha was opened the communist regime was overthrown and as Bulgarians embrace democracy, this epic monument to communism was abandoned.
ownership of Buzludzha has fallen to the post communist state. But Bulgaria is one of the poorest countries in the European Union and it does not have enough money to maintain or repair it. Instead, the building has been left to the elements.
But there is a haunting beauty in the buildings decline, and people have recently been finding creative uses for the space. Huben Hubenov, editor of a fashion magazine in Bulgaria, staged a photo shoot there in July. It has also been used for art exhibitions, workshops, and as a backdrop for a music video by a French pop band. Even though it's technically closed, dozens of visitors explore Buzludzha every week. The area isn't serviced by public transport so the curious must drive or bike some 30 kilometers outside of a town called Gabrovo, up a dangerous mountain road. Once there, they'll confront crumbling staircases, barred entrances, and broken glass. To enter they must crawl through a small opening on the side of the building, and over a 10 meter drop.
Experts believe a full renovation would cost over $19 million - a price tag that leaves Bulgarians conflicted. Some suggest demolishing the structure. Others think it could be used as a museum to remember communism - but even this is controversial.
25 years after its completion, Buzludzha is still a divisive topic. Bulgarians have different visions for its future but most agree that it should have one.
