Very interesting exhibition Soviet Life in Tallinn, Estonia. Welcome, please!
A Time Travel to the Soviet Everyday Life | Exhibition NO BANANAS | Tallinn
An exhibition “No Bananas. A Time Travel to the Soviet Everyday Life” was opened at the Tallinn TV Tower from April 2017 until September 2018.
The exhibition is based on stories collected by many individuals, among them actors Erki Laur and Tarmo Männart. Besides numerous interesting objects, a realistic replica of an average Estonian apartment in the 70-80s style has been created specifically for the exhibition.
Those who remember that period can recall the absurdity of it, for the younger people it is something totally exotic. Foreigners without any nostalgic connection to the Soviet era get a chance of a glimpse into the everyday life of people on the other side of the Iron Curtain. Visitors can explore the period by following different routes.
The instigators of the idea of the exhibition summarize its concept as follows: “We focus on the 70-80s. By that time, Soviet people had adapted to the system they were forced to live in. They had devised ways to live and manage as comfortably as possible. They were ingenious, creative and smart. The lack of goods in shops didn’t necessarily mean that the homes lacked them. Things were DIY’d if necessary. Coping within the system entailed a certain amount of absurdity. This is the aspect that interests us.”
Production designer Katrin Sipelgas, one of the curators of the exhibition, adds: ”During the last four years, I have worked on two films set in the 80s. It seems it’s time to start looking back. It’s getting harder and harder to find props for that period – this exhibition also serves the purpose of collecting and preserving objects that often are moved from the family home to the summer house and end up in a bonfire there.”

Tallinn , Estonia
We first visited Tallinn with special permission of the now defunct Soviet Union in 1972.
Now its a much restored gem.
Tallinn, Estonia’s capital on the Baltic Sea, is the country’s cultural hub. It retains its walled, cobblestoned Old Town, home to cafes and shops, as well as Kiek in de Kök, a 15th-century defensive tower. Its Gothic Town Hall, built in the 13th century and with a 64m-high tower, sits in historic Tallinn’s main square. St. Nicholas Church is a 13th-century landmark exhibiting ecclesiastical art.

40-th anniversary of film the Mirror by Tarkovsky, Tallinn, Estonia
Andrei Arsenyevich Tarkovsky (Russian: Андре́й Арсе́ньевич Тарко́вский, IPA: [ɐnˈdrʲej ɐrˈsʲenʲjɪvʲɪt͡ɕ tɐrˈkofskʲɪj]; 4 April 1932 -- 29 December 1986) was a Soviet and Russian film-maker, writer, film editor, film theorist, theatre and opera director.
Tarkovsky's films include Ivan's Childhood, Andrei Rublev, Solaris, The Mirror, and Stalker. He directed the first five of his seven feature films in the Soviet Union; his last two films, Nostalghia, and The Sacrifice, were produced in Italy and Sweden, respectively. His work is characterized by spirituality and metaphysical themes, long takes, lack of conventional dramatic structure, and distinctively authored use of cinematography. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest film-makers of all time. Ingmar Bergman said of Tarkovsky:
Tarkovsky for me is the greatest [director], the one who invented a new language, true to the nature of film, as it captures life as a reflection, life as a dream.
~~~~~~~~~~
The Mirror (Russian: Зеркало, tr. Zerkalo; known in the UK as Mirror[2]) is a 1975 Russian art film directed by Andrei Tarkovsky (1932--1986). It is loosely autobiographical, unconventionally structured, and incorporates poems composed and read by the director's father, Arseny Tarkovsky. The film features Margarita Terekhova, Ignat Daniltsev, Alla Demidova, Anatoli Solonitsyn, Tarkovsky's wife Larisa Tarkovskaya and his mother Maria Vishnyakova, with a soundtrack by Eduard Artemyev.
The Mirror has no apparent plot — instead, it rhythmically combines contemporary scenes with childhood memories, dreams, and newsreel footage. The cinematography slips unpredictably from color to black-and-white and back again. The loose flow of visually oneiric images has been compared to stream of consciousness technique in literature. Its complex, layered structure makes The Mirror one of Tarkovsky's most difficult films, as well as his most personal.
The concept of The Mirror dates as far back as 1964. Over the years Tarkovsky wrote several screenplay variants, at times working with Aleksandr Misharin. Their mutually developed script initially was not approved by the film committee of Goskino, and it was only after several years of waiting that Tarkovsky would be allowed to realize The Mirror. At various times the script was known under different names, most notably Confession and A White, White Day. The completed film was initially rejected by Goskino, and after some delay was given only limited release in the Soviet Union.
The Mirror has grown in reputation over many years and ranked ninth in Sight and Sound's 2012 directors poll of the best films ever made.
Patarei Prison Museum Part 1
24.7.2010 Tallinn Estonia
Sea fortress Patarei (Battery) is a unique monument of architecture. The defence system completed in 1840 by order of Emperor Nicholas I has preserved its beautiful limestone facade.
With the development of technology the fortress lost its value as defence structure and became a barrack for soldiers from different army units.
Special period for Patarei arrived in 1919 when the fortress became a prison. Because of its two meter walls, Patarei suited very well for that purpose. It was also used by all foreign powers occupying Estonia.
Patarei has preserved its original Soviet interior that is of interest both to local people and tourists from abroad.
Year 2006 brough new winds to Patarei. Culture Park Patarei brings special atmosphere inside the walls of the fortress and around them. Concerts, parties, theatre performances, exhibitions, handicraft making will take place here.
Here you can also find the first seaside summer cafe of Tallin.
