Inside the risky venture of Spaceport America
In the middle of the New Mexico desert lies Spaceport America, a glittering, alien structure advertised as the very first purpose-built commercial spaceport. It’s home to Virgin Galactic, a space startup that promises to send tourists into orbit as early as next year. But even if that milestone happens, it will follow years of delays, setbacks, and even tragedy. Local residents in the nearby town of Truth or Consequences were told to expect big things when New Mexico joined the private space economy, but many now wonder if the dream of a space industry will ever materialize.

Spaceport America (formerly the Southwest Regional Spaceport) is a spaceport located in the Jornada del Muerto desert basin in New Mexico, United States just west of the White Sands Missile Range. It lies 90 miles (140 km) north of El Paso, 45 miles (72 km) north of Las Cruces, 20 miles (32 km) southeast of Truth or Consequences. Spaceport America was officially declared open on October 18, 2011.

Rocket Launches-Spaceport America Cup
The Spaceport America Cup is designed around IREC – the Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition for student rocketry teams from all over the country and around the world.
This is the Super Bowl of collegiate rocket engineering, with more than 100 teams from colleges and universities all around the world.
The competition has those teams launching their rockets to specific target altitudes of either 10,000 or 30,000 feet, using solid, liquid or hybrid fuels.
Yes, spectators are welcome.
Spaceport America is located west of the White Sands Missile Range, between Truth or Consequences and Las Cruces in New Mexico.

It lies 89 miles (143 km) north of El Paso, 45 miles (72 km) north of Las Cruces, and 20 miles (32 km) southeast of Truth or Consequences.
The site has been described as the world's first purpose-built commercial spaceport because it is the first spaceport designed and constructed specifically for commercial users that had not previously been an airport or federal infrastructure of any kind. The site is built to accommodate both vertical and horizontal launch aerospace vehicles, as well as an array of non-aerospace events and commercial activities. Spaceport America is owned and operated by the State of New Mexico, via a state agency, the New Mexico Spaceport Authority.Current tenants of the spaceport include Virgin Galactic while UP Aerospace and Armadillo Aerospace have all operated from the spaceport.
The site's major tenants have experienced problems—or change of plans—in development of their programs and technologies, resulting in spaceport revenue far below projections, and a political controversy about what to do with the expensive government-built spaceport. Ground has been broken on the construction site of Spaceport America, the world's first purpose-built commercial spaceport.
Those behind the project say that it will help provide a new chapter in space exploration.
When finished in 18 months' time, the facility will house Virgin Galactic's space tourism business and other firms working in the commercial space arena.

T or C, as it is called locally, is a pretty unique place. From Hot Springs to giant ranches owned by Ted Turner, it is an interesting place. We stayed at Elephant Butte State Park. One of the few that has free WiFi that is actually usable! The history of the area and how T or C became T or C, is pretty interesting! Make sure and subscribe if you would like to follow along with Terri, George(me) & Gizzy on our adventures as we wander the country living full time in our red, 2002 Newmar Dutch Star, diesel pusher RV. I swear, we have to be the only people in a red class A motorhome.
