The Sparkling Lake, one of the most popular scenic spots in the Jiuzhaigou National Park, was found dried up after the M 7.0 earthquake hit 3.5 km away from the valley on Wednesday.
The lake is 2,211 meters in altitude, 232 meters in length, 134-294 meters in width, and 16 meters in depth. It was named Sparkling Lake because when the sun shines on the lake, the water sparkles like blinking stars.

The Jiuzhaigou national park is shaped like the letter Y. It comprises three valleys, the first part is the Shuzheng Valley, the left side is the Zechawa Valley and the right side the Rize Valley. There’s also the Zharu Valley, which is rarely visited by tourists.

Jiuzhaigou Valley, eulogized as a world of magical fairytale, has for years enchanted tourists with its mountains and luxuriant forests, colourful lakes, gushing waterfalls and abundant wildlife. To its south is the Huanglong (Yellow Dragon Scenic Area). Jiuzhaigou Valley is located in Nanping County, 450 kilometres (about 280 miles) to the north of Chengdu City, Sichuan, covers a total area of 720 square kilometres and the valley is 50 kilometres in length.
In 1992, UNESCO entered this scenic area onto the world natural heritage list. Jiuzhaigou, literally the Nine Village Valley, is hence known for the nine Tibetan villages within its boundary, Inhabited by Tibetans, the nine villages and alpine lakes, are like reflecting mirrors or crystal jade blocks inlaid in snow mountains and forests.
After being closed for a year after the earthquake, the Unesco World Heritage Site is now ready to receive visitors again. We trekked upon this crystal fairyland to explore the silver-coated trees and where the mountain are shining in the sun, sparkling alpines lakes and the snow white ice falls and blue lakes surrounded by snow-covered woods.

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake has wrecked the beauty of Jiuzhaigou national park, a popular tourist attraction in southwest China's Sichuan Province.
The earthquake hit Jiuzhaigou County on Tuesday night, killing at least 20 and injuring 507 as of Thursday afternoon. The Jiuzhaigou national park, also known as Jiuzhai Valley, was one of the worst affected areas.

Rescuers have little hope of finding people alive in China's Sichuan Province, after a deadly earthquake struck on Tuesday. The death toll in Jiuzhaigou has climbed to 25, and nearly 50 people are still in critical condition. Experts have said the quality of housing in the area has helped keep casualty numbers down.

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake jolted southwest China's Sichuan Province on Tuesday, says China Earthquake Networks Center.
There were no immediate reports of damage from the area, which is frequently struck by earthquakes.
Citing a statement issued by the centre, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported that the quake occurred at around 9.19 pm (Beijing time) and struck at a depth of 20 km.
The US Geological Survey measured the quake at magnitude 6.6 and said it struck 200 kilometres west northwest of Guangyuan in Sichuan province at a depth of 32 km, South China Morning Post reported.
Pictures on state media-run social media sites showed some minor damage in Jiuzhaigou, with tiles having fallen from buildings and people gathering outdoors, but no major damage.
The Sichuan earthquake administration said the epicentre of the tremor was in Ngawa prefecture, largely populated by ethnic Tibetans.

Jiuzhaigou Valley is part of the Min Mountains on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau and stretches over 72,000 hectares (180,000 acres). It is known for its many multi-level waterfalls, colorful lakes, and snow-capped peaks. Its elevation ranges from 2,000 to 4,500 metres (6,600 to 14,800 ft).
Jiuzhaigou Valley was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1992 and a World Biosphere Reserve in 1997. It belongs to the category V (Protected Landscape) in the IUCN system of protected area categorization.
