Camp Croft, SC - 1941
Camp Croft was a US Army Replacement Training Center located near Spartanburg, SC. It was built in 1941 and closed after WWII in 1946.
The short video you are about to watch was likely shot by Louis Davenport, of Midvale
(now known as Wanaque) in Passaic County, NJ. Thomas C Davenport
(1919-1999) is believed to be a son of Louis, and was drafted into service in Feb 1941 and sent to Camp Croft for training. Little is known of Thomas's army experiences.
The beginning scene of mountains was likely shot en-route between NJ and SC. The next few scenes show Camp Croft as it appeared in 1941, beginning with a retreat formation on the parade field. In the later shots, note the lack of grass, no sidewalks, and plenty of Upstate SC red mud! Camp scenes are interspersed with shots of downtown Spartanburg.

February's event features Bill Gray, president of the Ohio Valley Railroad Co., and focuses on the future of railroad service in Gaston County. Until the 1950s, Gaston County was served by the Piedmont & Northern shortline railroad, and plans are underway to provide this service again to the region.

Author and historian Damon L. Fordham speaks of Laban Morgan, a black journalist of Spartanburg, SC in the early 1900s and co-founder of what is now Cornerstone Baptist Church in that city. This story is told in Mr. Fordham's book True Stories of Black South Carolina. Filmed in Mt. Pleasant SC on August 8, 2015. Mr. Fordham is available for speaking engagements.

The Upstate is the region in the westernmost part of South Carolina, United States, also known as the Upcountry, which is the historical term. Although loosely defined among locals, the general definition includes the ten counties of the commerce-rich I-85 corridor in the northwest corner of South Carolina. This definition coincides with the Greenville–Spartanburg–Anderson, SC Combined Statistical Area, as first defined by the Office of Management and Budget in 2015, and maintained as of 2017. The region's population was 1,347,112 as of 2016. Situated between Atlanta and Charlotte, the Upstate is the fastest-growing region of South Carolina, and is the geographical center of the Charlanta mega-region. After BMW's initial investment, foreign companies, including others from Germany, have a substantial presence in the Upstate; several large corporations have established regional, national, or continental headquarters in the area. Greenville is the largest city in the region with a population of 67,453 and an urban-area population of 400,492, and it is the base of most commercial activity. Spartanburg and Anderson are next in population.
