There is more to life than increasing its speed

How Copenhageners really live
A bit of background on typical Copenhagener housing
by historian Nina Søndergaard
Today the most common type of housing for a Copenhagener is a 2 room apartment in a 6 storey high block from before 1940.There's often a nice green backyard in the court - where the bins, bikes and prams also have their place.
This is quite new. From the 70's and onwards Copenhagen has razed and demolished almost all the former back buildings which could be stacked in five or six layers and many in 6 storeys as well.
Copenhagen was very densely populated because most people only had two means of transportation: By foot or bike.
Walking some 5 km (3.1 statute mile) might take an hour each way - of a 12 hour work day. Both trams, s-trains, busses and cars were not really affordable for ordinary workers until the 1960's. That made living in a dark back building look like a good alternative to sunnier but almost unreachable suburbs.
Many apartments were quite austere and overcrowded: No lifts, no central or district heating, no hot running water, no showers, no toilets. Overcrowding, that is more than two person pr. room, peaked in 1921 with more than 20.000 overcrowded apartments.
Fifty years later the number of overcrowded flats was so low that no-one bothered to count it, but by then some 12.000 Copenhageners were moving out of the city each year to suburbia to better houses.Copenhagen lost 40 % of its population from 1950 to 1992.
In 1921 only 10 % of the houses in Copenhagen had a shower. That figure rose to more than 70 % in 1990. Often by converting broom closets to bathrooms or by putting up a shower cabin in the bedroom.
Many made do with public baths (as the one in Sjællandsgade on Nørrebro from 1917), kids got a free shower at least once a week in school and lots of cellars got a shower room for all the inhabitants in the building.
Still more than 2000 apartments share a toilet on the back stairs with their neighbour. This is due to a law from 1938 that demanded a water flushed toilet on every storey in residential housing. Before that time many had to make do with a privy in the back yard - shared with up to 19 other inhabitants. And some rats.
Today more spare time, more regulation and higher expectations has given Copenhagen a fairer share of spas and wellness in the newer buildings. So enjoy a nice and clean Copenhagen!
So enjoy a nice and clean Copenhagen!
A Dane had on the average 52m2 (553 square feet) of living space in 2012, up from 43 m2 (462 square feet) in 1980).
Copenhageners live on lesser space: 41 m2 (443 square feet) today.
The Danes use on average some 3530 DKK or $621 a year on soap, make-up etc.

10 very cool reasons to add Montreal to your travel list - Travel Guide vs Booking
As the freezing waters of the Oresund close over my shoulders, I scream.Or try to.All I manage is a gurgling shriek as the cold clamps my ribs. It's surely insane to use this Baltic strait as a plunge pool, but after 15 minutes in a sauna - especially when 'sauna mistress' Tina has tossed buckets of water onto the hot coals, upping the heat dramatically - cooling down seems like a good idea.Tina Andersen runs the hot-and-cold 'SaunaGus' experience at the Kurhotel Skodsborg as a group class. And now winter bathing season is under way, there's little excuse not to take the plunge.Though it's not for the faint-hearted.'You are amazing,' she exhorts.'Your mind is powerful.Use it to overcome the heat.' Four of us follow her meekly, stupefied by heat, down to the sea, a two-minute walk from the hotel spa.And then, wow! The water is so shockingly cold that it's like being sliced with a scalpel. After just ten seconds, I scramble out, shrieking with relief, high as a kite on a rush of endorphins. The air is hardly warmer than the water, but it seems tropical by comparison and I feel invincible. The hot and cold shock treatment works wonders for the circulation, eases stiff muscles and promotes deeper sleep. What's more, those endorphins help counteract depression — useful when it's only light for around seven hours a day in winter. The Kurhotel Skodsborg is a spa hotel on the outskirts of Copenhagen, overlooking the Oresund. It's all cosy and 'hygge' with sofas, fireplaces and tiny candles on every table. The food is healthy and delicious - and, yes, alcohol is allowed. The fabulous open sandwiches, or Smorrebrod, have avocado, or roast beef, piled high on 'Paleo bread' made from nuts and seeds, but no one is going to stop you enjoying the gooey brownies or cinnamon rolls. The hotel's classy gym is popular with locals and it's only a 20-minute hop from the stylish shops of Copenhagen.Tina runs two classes a day and they're so booked up that her colleagues are now offering mini-SaunaGus experiences, for those who aren't quite up for the full immersion.
