Volcanic Sand Bath Experience ★ ONLY in JAPAN
VOLCANIC SAND BATH? YES!! Welcome to Ibusuki, Kagoshima!
In this episode, John travels to Kagoshima prefecture on the bottom of Kyushu to visit this unique style of onsen. It's call “suna mushi onsen” (砂むし温泉) in Japan. This style of Volcanic Sand Bath is only in Ibusuki, Kagoshima.
There are several health benefits associated to suna mushi onsen.
★ Good for the skin
★ Improves blood circulation
★ Increases your metabolism
★ Relaxation
The sand is on average 50 to 55 degrees Celsius (~122 F) and that heat can be adjusted for children (cooler) -- or hotter for those who can take the heat.
The recommended time limit in the sand bath is 10 minutes although I like to stay under for 15 minutes. You can stay as long as you like but to be honest, you can't stay over 15-20 minutes because your skin and body just can't manage it.
After the sand bath, you rinse off, return to blue yukata robe and soak in an onsen if you like.
The whole experience is only 1080 yen.
A small towel is 120 yen. Lockers and a yukata are included.
Getting to Kagoshima:
Flight: I flew SKYMARK airlines for 9,800 yen but ANA and JAL also fly to Kagoshima from Tokyo as well as Osaka / Kansai.
Train:
Kagoshima is now linked by the Shinkansen like from Tokyo but it takes about 7-8 hours with a change of trains in either Hakata (Fukuoka).
Bus: There are night buses from Osaka, Fukuoka and Tokyo.
I recommend flying though.

Fermenting Cedar Enzyme Baths | Osmosis Day Spa | Spoiled To Perfection
Our bloggers at Spoiled To Perfection were invited to experience the famous cedar enzyme baths at Osmosis Day Spa in Freestone, CA, the only place in the US that offers this traditional, Japanese body treatment. When we arrived, we were greeted by a friendly hostess who got us checked in and encouraged us to take a calming walk through their famous meditation garden while our bath attendant prepared for our treatment. The walk through the garden was truly a spiritual experience, whether you believe in that stuff or not. The aromas, atmosphere and silence make you feel as though you are truly somewhere else, far away from day to day worries. After a calming walk through the garden, we heading into the spa to meet our bath attendant in the tea room. She poured us some enzyme tea and explained to process of how the baths work. Osmosis prepares a grounded blend of cedar, rice bran and enzymes imported from Japan, along with antiseptic oils to help keep the blend sanitary from use to use. (The mixture is changed out every week to two weeks depending on frequency of use.) The Cedar Enzyme Bath can only be experienced in Japan, and here at Osmosis Day Spa. It is a traditional Japanese body treatment that is believed to stimulate your metabolism, exfoliate the skin and heal aches and pains. It's self-heating, much like a compost pile. The heat is generated biologically through the beginning stages of fermentation. When it's over, you step out into a private garden and sort of brush yourself off with a soft bristle brush and then shower the rest off. We finished off the day in the sound therapy room where we relaxed on a cozy massage table and listened to calming music until we almost fell asleep. Journey in Kagoshima
Last 5 days of my trip to Japan. Got sick for 2-3 days, so we will skip that part. Then visited Sengan-en garden, sakurajima island, went to many different natural hotsprings, and of course ate delicious food.
Erratum:
You could walk up Sakurajima, it would take 2 hours to climb up, and another 2 hours to walk down.

Getting Buried Alive At Volcano Sand Spa
SUBSCRIBE NOW:
Forget traditional massages and facials, this sand spa takes things to another level - burying you up to your neck in hot volcanic sand.
As ways to get your R&R go, this is extreme, with each customer buried in sand until only their head is left peeping out the top.
The hot sand - heated by water bubbling beneath the coastline thanks to the nearby volcano - reaches extreme temperatures.
Guests wear a yakuta, a robe-like garment, before having the sand piled on top until they are completely cocooned - from where they begin to sweat out toxins and impurities.
Costing just $7.30 (£5.50) for fifteen minutes buried alive, tourists regularly flock to the little known Kagoshima Prefecture just to experience the bizarre tradition.
