Motor Boating - Lake Mead
Lake Mead is one of the largest reservoirs in the United States it holds up to 4 trillion gallons of water, and supplies water to over 25 million people in the States of California, Nevada and Arizona. The Hoover Dam was completed in 1936 blocking up the Colorado River in the Boulder Canyon. The water level is currently in drought mode but heavy snowfall this year should help fill it up. it is currently 148 feet below capacity at 1085 feet, with a full pool being 1229' which hasn't occurred since 1983. It's Crazy to see how much the water level fluctuates in this huge lake. if the lake level drops below 1075' it is considered drought conditions and they start rationing water in Nevada and Arizona, but not California because they have first priority on the water. If the lake level drops below 950' the hoover dam will lose its ability to generate electricity. in 2015 the completed a pipeline to extract water from a depth of 850'

OFFSHORE SUPER BOATS RACING | 2018 National Championship | Clearwater Beach, FL
Adrenaline junkies from all over the world were on Clearwater Beach this weekend for the annual Super Boat National Championship Races. All their expectations were met: super high speeds, a boat turned over and pulled out before sinking, another boat almost crashing at the turn, race suspended… God bless, there were no casualties.
Super boat team members said this event is one they look forward to every year. They were happy the red tide impacts didn’t ruin the race or their trip. Out on the course, the water looked clear and the beautiful views of the Gulf of Mexico and the magnificent Clearwater Beach were taking your breath away.
The organizers did everything to provide us with a spectacular event. But, unfortunately, there is no way to predict the lengths the human stupidity can go to. The Superboat Ultimate Race was suspended after the 3rd lap because some ‘swimmer’ ended up in the middle of the course.
This video was shot with a smartphone and a DJI Osmo Mobile 2 Handheld Smartphone Gimbal, $127:

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD AIR CUSHION VEHICLE ACV TESTS 1971 HOVERCRAFT AIR CUSHION VEHICLE 50894
This color film CGMP 11-71 is about the Air Cushion Vehicle (ACV) and its eight-month evaluation in 1971 for use with the Coast Guard. It is presented by the Department of Transportation and the U.S. Coast Guard. An Experimental Bell SK-5 Coast Guard air cushion vehicle hovercraft glides on top of the waves. It moves up onto the land. Others are briefly shown (:32-1:54). In 1969, the Coast Guard Station in St. Petersburg evaluated one for use. The back rudders, propeller, and hull are shown. The propellers are turned on and the craft lifts up from the ramp before entering the water at Tampa Bay (1:55-2:53). It is shown crossing the beach and back into the water, as well as in the marshlands (2:54-3:26). Fort Point Coast Guard Station in San Francisco is shown from overhead and its sign, where the ACV was also researched. The spinning propellers are shown (3:27-3:52). An ACV is guided into the water on search-and-rescue missions. A man stands holding a red smoke flair on the deck of his boat. The Coast Guard ACV arrives, tosses the man a line, and tows the boat in. A downed pilot holds red smoke flares while treading water and is rescued (3:53-5:35). The ACV ferries repair personnel to service a buoy, which it can pull directly next to (5:42-6:29). The driver’s feet are shown operating directional controls (6:32). An ACV carries bales of straw to a beach area threatened by an oil spill. A woman carries a shovel of straw into the water (6:35-6:42). The ACV pilot wears a helmet. He presses buttons and turns on switches (6:44-7:03). During frigid conditions, an ACV leaves a hangar in Point Barrow, Alaska in 1970. It is shown zipping across the ice, stops, spins, and moves on (7:05-8:06). An ACV is shown moving through waves, with spray flying around it (8:07-8:27).
This film and the ACV was an outgrowth of 1960s interest within the Coast Guard as to the feasibility of obtaining Air Cushion Vehicles (ACVs) to support a variety of Coast Guard missions. When three SK-5 ACVs, no longer required for the naval mission in Vietnam, became available in late 1969 the Coast Guard elected to conduct an expanded ACV evaluation program. The hovercraft were overhauled in the summer of 1970. Two ACVs, the first arriving in October of 1970 were assigned to the Fort Point Coast Guard Station, San Francisco, California. The third was utilized for Arctic Trials at Point Barrow Alaska.
The SK-5 was 38 feet 10 inches long with a beam of 23 feet 9 inches and was 15 feet 11 inches in height. The cabin supported a crew of three consisting of an Operator, Radar/Navigator, and a SAR crewman. The SK-5 could comfortably carry six passengers or an appropriate amount of cargo. The craft had a maximum speed of 70 knots and a range of 300 nautical miles. It was powered by a General Electric LM100 Marine Gas Turbine rated at 1050 shaft horsepower. A four-bladed, variable pitch aviation propeller provided thrust and seven foot diameter centrifugal supplied the air cushion. Both fan and propeller were driven off the same engine.
The evaluation report recognized that the ACV would not replace the utilization of boats and aircraft due to some operational limitations the ACV had that were not present in the other craft. The report did, however, conclude that the air cushion vehicle could and should play a significant role in the Coast Guard. It went on to illustrate that used in concert with small boats and aircraft, the Coast Guard would be able to provide a more effective response capability at less cost.
The Coast Guard did not procure ACVs. The capability was not disputed but it was recognized that newer and more advanced and more expensive hovercraft would have to be procured.
Incidentally, during the Vietnam War units similar to the SK-5 were used as Patrol Air Cushion Vehicle (PACV). The PACV was based on Bell Aerosystems Bell SK-5 hovercraft; a licensed version of the British Saunders-Roe (later, British Hovercraft Corporation) SR.N5 hovercraft. The SK-5 was adapted for American military use in 1965. Three were purchased by the U.S. Navy for operations in the emerging Vietnam War. Training of PACV crews was performed in the waters off Coronado, California near San Diego.

Cuba - Large flotilla of US boats in Havana | Editor's Pick | 3 Feb 16
The largest American regatta since relations were restored between the United States and Cuba last year began its final leg on Wednesday, with 63 boats carrying almost 500 American sailors taking off from Havana's historic Marina Hemingway, heading for Key West, Florida.
The regatta began last weekend with the Key West to Varadero, Cuba leg and ends on Saturday in the Florida Keys.
For many on board, their first glimpse of Cuba has been an exciting and fulfilling experience and many hope to return.
On board the When and If, a boat once owned by World War ll General George S. Patton, preparations for the day's regatta kept the crew busy throughout the morning.
Dozens of American boats, pennants and flags flying in a colorful display seldom seen off the shores of Cuba, streamed off Havana's iconic Malecon boulevard, to the amazement of many people.
The flotilla then sailed past the 400 year-old Morro Castle, which has guarded the entrance to Havana Bay since the 16th century from marauding pirates trying to steal Spanish gold and silver.
The Key West to Cuba regatta is the second U.S. sponsored sailing competition since relations were restored last year, and Americans are clearly eager to add Cuba to a long list of Caribbean destinations popular amongst U.S. sailors.

Key West Charter Boat Fishing
We took a trip down to Key West. While we were there we climbed aboard the Salty Goat Fishing charter boat. Although we didn't have the most successful day of fishing (I believe due to a gentleman bringing a Banana on the boat) we still had a great time! Beverly and I only caught a couple non-keeper fish so we went on our merry way after the day was done. We got a tan and saw the beautiful Tarpon feeding dockside. After the boat we went to Dante's for a snack and then back to our Hostel the NYAH. Look out for more videos from our trip to come!

The S.S. Badger: Manitowoc-Ludington And Back
I hadn't traveled on the carferry in over 50 years. On recent trip back to my hometown of Manitowoc, I decided it was time to do it again. After all, This ol gal (S.S. Badger) is older than I am and may not be able to go on much longer. EPA has been trying to shut her down. It was a great day to be on Lake Michigan. Very cool and sunny. It was refreshing. It spent the night in Ludington and boarded back on in the morning for a return trip. This was a great idea. Glad I did it. Below are some stats on the Badger.
The SS Badger is a passenger and vehicle ferry in the United States that has been in service on Lake Michigan since 1953. Currently, she shuttles between Ludington, Michigan, and Manitowoc, Wisconsin, connecting U.S. Route 10 between those two cities. She is the last coal-fired passenger vessel operating on the Great Lakes.
The ship is named after the University of Wisconsin's athletic teams, the Wisconsin Badgers. The Badger runs on Michigan time (Eastern Time Zone, whereas Wisconsin is in the Central Time Zone) and riders pay Michigan taxes on their fares. She runs on a seasonal basis from May to October.
The Badger was constructed as a rail car ferry in 1952–53 by the Christy Corporation of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, along with her twin sister the SS Spartan (named after the mascot of Michigan State University) with a reinforced hull for ice-breaking. She was originally used to carry railroad cars, passengers and automobiles between the two sides of the lake all year long. Today, the ferry connects the eastern and western segments of U.S. Route 10 in the two cities from May to October.
Launched September 6, 1952, the SS Badger entered service March 21, 1953, for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (from 1973 a subsidiary of the Chessie System). The C&O had acquired the rail car ferry operations in Ludington with its acquisition of the Pere Marquette Railway in 1947. After 1972, service was gradually curtailed; all but the three newest vessels were retired, and sailings to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Manitowoc, Wisconsin were discontinued, leaving only the route between Ludington and Kewaunee, Wisconsin. On July 1, 1983, the Chessie System ended its car ferry service when it sold the steamers Badger, Spartan, and City of Midland 41 to Glen F. Bowden of Ludington. He organized the Michigan-Wisconsin Transportation Company (MWT) to continue the operation.
The railroad car ferry concept on Lake Michigan was facing serious economic troubles during the 1980s and by November 1988, the Badger was the only vessel running. She was the last of the 14 ferries since 1897 based in Ludington remaining in service. On November 16, 1990, facing bankruptcy, Bowden laid up the Badger, ending 93 years of railway car ferry service out of Ludington and 98 years on Lake Michigan as a whole.
