Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei // Spinnerei

Leipzig’s dynamic art scene enjoys an excellent reputation worldwide. Its prime site, Spinnerei, was formerly the largest cotton mill of continental Europe. Since its decommissioning in 1992, the factory has been subject to constant change. Artists have developed the cotton mill into a real cosmos of art. Meanwhile about 100 of them have set up their own studio, along with 11 galleries and the non-profit space Halle 14. Key figure of the so-called “New Leipzig School” is artist Neo Rauch, who was among the pioneers of the Spinnerei's revitalisation.
NORDIC LEIPZIG: Spinnerei Gallery Tour April 2019
The Nordic artists from Goethe-Institut's residency programme NORDIC LEIPZIG exhibiting their work at the Spinnerei Gallery Tour in April 2019; featuring Conny Karlsson Lundgren, Bjargey Olafsdottir, Elisabeth Moritz and Tuukka Haapakorpi.
In collaboration with LIA (Leipzig International Art Programme), the Goethe-Institutes in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden offer Nordic artists the opportunity to take up a three-month residency at the Art and Culture Centre Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei.
The artists in Leipzig receive their own studio and are professionally accompanied by the “Atelier für Radierung Maria und Vlado Ondrej“ in the production of a graphic work. The works that are being produced during the residencies are being exhibited to interested visitors at the quarterly occuring gallery tour, “Spinnereirundgang“. Moreover, after the conclusion of the residencies, the graphic works of all northern European artists-in-residence will be exhibited on tour through northern Europe.

Relocate: Episode 3 - Leipzig (Part 3/4)
VW presents a four part series that explores the hopes, dreams and realities of moving abroad.
New Year, new start, new city? DJ, producer and NTS radio presenter Nabihah Iqbal is questioning whether London is still the city for her and she’s not alone. 323,000 emigrated from Britain last year and with spiralling costs of living, contrasted with the perceived better quality of life elsewhere, it's easy to see why. Having already delved into the opportunities and burgeoning cultural scenes of Lisbon, Nabihah looks to Leipzig and uncovers why Germany’s 14th largest city is inheriting Berlin’s reputation as the city to move to if you want to concentrate on your art. In this episode, she meets creatives who have been drawn by its youthful energy, community spirit and affordability.

Made in Germany | Eine Stadt im Wandel - Leipzig hebt ab

SMS Chatwall, Text to Screen at Nightclub BAR, Spinnerei Leipzig/Germany
After the Tour of the Galleries in Leipzig on 9th & 10th September 2006 the New Media artist and painter Matthias Haase from Dresden (Germany) installed a SMS chat system at the party labelled „I'm Lovin' it. The event was hosted by the new nightclub known as „BAR located in building number 10 at Baumwollspinnerei (Spinnerei) where galleries and exhibition spaces opened new exhibitions that weekend. Next to dancing to electronic music by the Djs Carbone (Leipzig), Peter Nikolai (Berlin) and Tensing Norgai (Oslo), all guests could send their own text messages to the chatwall to be displayed due the party. The SMS installation has been realised by a video projector whereby the system's telephone number and incoming SMS have been projected onto a wall with window and radiator at the venue.
Incoming messages like „I tried hard not to be bothered by art and „Bass, we love you, but when will there be Jungle? solved questions on art and club sound. This text message: „Tokio-leipzig, bankok-leipzig, hamburg-leipzig, barcelona-leipzig, berlin-leipzig, paris-leipzig, moskau-leipzig, kapstadt-leipzig, kopenhagen-leipzig, prag-leipzig left an impression on the internationality of the new art szene in Leipzig.
Until October the 14th 2006 the chat system has been presented in a varied way as a SMS chat sculpture next to big sized oil paintings due the solo exhibition labeled Diesel - Painting and New Media by Matthias Haase at Artbuero Berlin Gallery in Berlin Mitte.
Matthias Haase graduated at the Acadamy of Fine Arts Dresden in 2005. Now he attends the Postgraduate Meisterschüler Program at the Acadamy of Fine Arts Dresden.
BAR is a night club located at the famous Baumwollspinnerei (Spinnerei) in building number 10 in Leipzig (Germany).

Made in Germany | Leipzig Transforms Itself
Even during the communist era,the eastern German city of Leipzig was an important center for industry and trade fairs. And it was here that the Monday Demonstrations began, which helped lead to the fall of the Berlin Wall.Today Leipzig welcomes goods from around the world. It's home to Europe's most state-of-the-art air freight hub, operated by logistics firm DHL. But the city also boasts a vibrant arts scene. Our reporter Dagmar Zindel visited a group of artists who work there in an former cotton mill.
