SPIRIT OF SUWANNEE MUSIC PARK
SPIRIT OF SUWANNEE MUSIC PARK
THURSDAY, MAY 9, 2019
The incredible Spirit of Suwannee Music Park is located some eight miles north of Live Oak, a cute little town in north Florida. Its roughly 800 acres can host as many as 21,000 visitors, many of whom will camp in a beautiful natural setting, while attending one of the many music festivals that are organized year-round. The park is located on the banks of the tea-colored Suwannee River, made famous by Stephen Foster’s 1851 minstrel song “Old Folks at home.” The park was initially operated by the Suwannee County Development Authority, and taken over by the Cornett family in 1985. They made it into the successful enterprise it is today. The Cornetts had started the still-going-strong “Festival of the Bluegrass” in Lexington, in 1974, so it is no wonder that their “Spirit of Suwannee Music Park and Campground” began as a venue for bluegrass festivals as well. Nowadays, the park features all kinds of music, including soul, bluegrass, country, roots revival, children’s programs, you name it.
We arrived on a Thursday afternoon, and were the only campers. We had a great site on the edge of a big, pond, surrounded by majestic cypress trees, across from the Bill Monroe shelter, how appropriate! As we discovered next morning, the woods are home to some incredible creatures.
The two big wooden sculptures were made by Danish recycle “Troll artist,” Thomas Dambo. The first one, Snorra of Suwannee, is named after his girlfriend. It is made entirely out of discarded pallets from a nearby furniture factory. The witch, complete with a cobweb in her throat, seems to be pulling herself out of the lake. The other one, Runes Tree, named after the artist’s assistant, shows a giant who is impaled by a tree. The sculptures were installed in 2015 for the yearly Hulaween festival, and were such a success with the festival goers that it was decided to keep them.
Although there was no concert scheduled that evening, Thursday night is karaoke night, held in the Music Hall, and hosted by Teddy Mac. Teddy is a super charming host, a wonderful singer, and a professional Elvis impersonator (as far as the latter is concerned, all we noticed is his Elvis pomp). I could not verify Teddy’s claim that his father was involved with the creation of “Heartbreak Hotel,” one of Elvis’s early hits, but it makes for a great story.
Teddy has the evening down to a science: all who want to sing have to sign up in advance, so the show progresses very smoothly, one singer at the time. As you will hear, some singers have remarkably good voices; one girl is so good that many guests put money at her feet. Teddy Mac sings towards the end of the evening, after which he helps to celebrate the birthdays of some of the guests.
Although the night’s performers may not have ventured into the realm of roots music, their solid, sometimes beautiful singing, and the ease with which they present their skills, make karaoke into a unique category of folk music, which we truly enjoyed.
Our Stay in Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park (60)
This video collaboration with The Spirit of Suwannee Park was quite a treat. The Cornett family owns and operates the park and Charles Cornett gave us the grand tour. To say this park is unique is a huge understatement. What we knew of the park beforehand is that it hosted many music festivals and that it put together a Christmas light show every year.
Located on the banks of the Suwannee River, the park consists of 800 acres of campgrounds, concert venues, recreational facilities, and forest. We had no expectations beyond that. We were in for surprise after surprise. We first saw the Campground. That was impressive all on its own. Then we got to see the beautiful Christmas lights display and browse through the craft village. There we met Mike and his dog Sammy. Mike creates beautiful wooden sculptures from fallen trees (with a chainsaw, no less). You see his amazing works sprinkled all throughout the campground.
Charles then led us through the dark woods to meet Snorra of Suwannee and Rune's Tree. Two sculptures by Belgian Sculptor Thomas Dambo. This is the last place you would expect to see these pieces of art, and yet here they are, seamlessly incorporated into the landscape.
Then we were treated to Karaoke night and an Elvis impersonator in the music hall.
We then got to see the treehouse that is a tribute to the Cornett family matriarch. Charles' mum, Jean, was very much a part of the creation of the tree house and her spirit lives on within its walls.
Our special send-off was an intimate jam session the night before our departure.
This park celebrates music, art, and a return to nature. We could easily have spent another week at the park and not run out activities.
Don't forget to check out the bat-house which is home to over 450,000 bats of some 90 different species. You can see them at dawn and dusk. We will definitely be back sometime (hopefully soon).

Walking through Suwanee Campgrounds 2017
The Suwanee campground in Live Oak, FL is among the coolest sites in the entire country. They host killer festivals in addition to offering an awesome, unique, and somewhat alien experience for any willing to make the trip. Follow along as myself and Mother Athena take a walk from Bird Sanctuary all the way to the general store, and then back again.
I recorded the footage using a GoPro Hero2 and found that the audio left a lot to desire, so I pitched it while I was editing editing video (using Sony Vegas), found some free tracks on freemusicarchive.org, and created a soundtrack using the following songs:
1. Horses by Pictures of the Floating World
2. Effemeah Weeps by Uncan
3. Jauntiness by Dee Yan-Key
4. Fae by Meydan
5. Roar of the Wild by Mid-Air Machine
6. Rainbow by Chad Crouch
7. Beauty by Spectacular Sound Productions
8. Breathing by Spectacular Sound Productions

Jeanene A.'s Review on The Dyrt:
▶︎ Ranger Review Stream 2 Sea at Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park
Spring can be different every year in Florida - always come prepared for bugs. This year it was the gnats if you were near the water - pretty bad. Up in the bank where our site was they were not so bad. Because these sites are way back in the woods primitive - previous campers did not practice LNT toilet behaviors - but we let mgmt know and I believe they were going to address. If you stay here during one of their famous music event this place can get insanely busy. Even the back trails in this are are heavily driven by golf carts (and many times drivers under the influence) Keep kids close while walking the dirt roads/trails. Mid week is best time to camp here to avoid crowds of party goers.
Product Review
On this kayak camping trip I had the opportunity to test out the Stream2Sea Sunscreen, Shampoo, Conditioner and the bonus is they are all eco friendly! I received the Conscious camper Kit the day before I headed out on the river and for 2 days in the FULL sun I did not get a burn. The sport sunscreen is very thick and takes a bit to rub in till absorbed but I can verify it works great! The shampoo, conditioner & Body Wash were fabulous and left my hair feeling silky smooth. Packing sizes were prefect for my dry bag. They included a very informative card about the products and why they are eco-conscious and coral safe! REMEMBER – a little bit goes a long way with this product! Pick up your Conscious Camper Kit before your next day out this summer at (

Tree House Tour - Tiny House Living on Suwannee River (61)
Have you ever wanted to live amongst the birds? This tree house celebrates our co-existence with nature. It was named Mother Tree as a loving tribute to Jean, the Cornett family matriarch.
Mother Tree is located in Spirit of the Suwannee Park and has captured the hearts of children of all ages. It was designed on the fly by Michael Garnier without any technical drawings.
The roof of the structure is 45 feet above ground level with a winding metal staircase to the upper level.
Most of the Southern Yellow Pine used for the house was harvested right there within the park.
The bolts that support the tree house will also ensure the tree lives to a ripe old age of 800 to 900 years.
Builders were suspended by ropes while working and lifts were used to get the wood and granite up into the tree.
This amazing tree house can be found at Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park. Why not book a tour today?
