Tarpon Springs and Sponge Docks | Honeymoon Island
What an amazing day we had at Tarpon Springs, Florida, as we visited this quaint town, eating an amazing breakfast at Toula's Trailside Cafe. After that we ventured down Pinellas trail to the Sponge Docks. Here we learned about the world's largest working sponge dock, harvesting tons of living sponges annually for export all over the world.
The sponge industry was started by immigrant Greeks during the early 1900s. They brought their skills and expertise to this area creating a thriving economy in this area. Today, the Greek influence can still be seen in the people, food and culture.
After this, we traveled a short distance to Honeymoon Island near Dunedin to catch some beach time with our dog, and to take in an amazing sunset!

The Sponge Docks - Tarpon Springs, Florida
Tarpon Springs is a city in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 21,003 at the 2000 census. According to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2004 estimates, the city had a population of 22,554.
Tarpon Springs is notable for having the largest percentage of Greek-Americans of any city in the U.S.
Geography
Tarpon Springs is located at 28°8′55″N, 82°45′29″W (28.148658, -82.758098).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 43.7 km² (16.9 mi²). 23.7 km² (9.1 mi²) of it is land and 20.0 km² (7.7 mi²) of it (45.83%) is water.
The region, with a series of bayous feeding into the Gulf of Mexico, first attracted attention as a place for winter homes about 1876. Some of the newly arrived visitors spotted Tarpons jumping out of the waters and so named the location Tarpon Springs. The first Greek immigrants arrived to this city during the 1880s, when they were hired to work as divers in the growing sponge harvesting industry. In 1905, John Cocoris introduced the technique of sponge diving to Tarpon Springs. Cocoris recruited Greek sponge divers from the Dodecanese Islands and Halki in particular leading, by the 1930s, to a very productive sponge industry in Tarpon Springs, generating millions of dollars a year.
When a red tide algae bloom occurred in 1947, wiping out the sponge fields in that region of the Gulf of Mexico, most of the sponge boats and divers switched to fishing and shrimping for a livelihood. The city then converted most of its sponge-related activities, especially the warehouses where they were sold, into tourist attractions. The Sponge Docks are now mostly shops, restaurants, and museums dedicated to the memory of Tarpon Springs' earlier industry. Most sponges sold on the docks are now imports: Very few sponges are harvested from the area. Attempts have been made in recent years to restart local sponge harvesting. Led by local businessman George Biliris, in the late 1980's the sponge industry made a great come back. In the fall of 2007, a record harvest of sponges by a single boat was made. The industry is alive and well in Tarpon Springs.

Yankee Carpet Bagger MEDICINE INFECTS FLORIDA
Yankee Carpet Bagger MEDICINE INFECTS FLORIDA.
Nothing displays the influence of Yankee carpet-baggers in the South, especially Florida, than the field of modern pharmaceutical medicine. True healing and the best medicine results from nature, but the Yankee carpet-baggers and their Southern cohorts have conspired against Floridians to remove the best natural medicines in the treatment of patients in Florida. Pharmaceutical medicine is Big Business. Cheap natural cures and immune boosters are absent from the field of big business medical in Florida because selling patented pharmaceutical drugs is profitable and using nature to heal a person and prevent disease is not profitable and is something anyone can do. For example, even simple sunlight has many health benefits. As a matter of fact, using sunlight to heal was very common practice in this country in the field of medicine and worked to produce 'miracle medical cures'. Today, in a modern hospital they concentrate on administering pharmaceutical drugs for profit and keep the patients out of the sun. In times past Solariums were used to vastly boost the immune system, fight microbes, lower cholesterol naturally and elevate a patient's mood. Florida, being rightfully known as the 'Sunshine State', does greatly boost the health of retired seniors and all Floridians, because Florida is located far enough south where the sun's ray have .therapeutic and healing benefits all-year around, unlike in the North. Many natural cures and treatments for variety of illnesses have been known for decades, but the natural cures and treatments have been pushed aside in favor of profitable pharmaceutical drugs. A large medical industry in Florida is 'assisted living' and also the diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Often these two diseases of the brain are caused by medications prescribed by doctors for lower cholesterol. Statin drugs that lower cholesterol are known to cause dementia and the cure for statin drug induced dementia is also known by those who practice natural medicine (Orthomolecular medicine). Adding coconut oil to the diet will vastly increase the ketones in the brain and reverse dementia is a matter of days in most cases, but the conventional carpet-bagger doctors won't use nature to address disease or health problems.
Two laws that are peculiar to Florida and integrally connected to the pharmaceutical industry are the 'Marchman Act' and the 'Baker Act'. In the case of the 'Marchman Act' the law is applied to people who abuse drugs or alcohol. But as usual the Yankee-inspired big business pharmaceutical industry is all about their profits and often the treatments are more additive and worse than the 'disease'. Drug addition can also be cured with natural methods as also alcohol dependency. The use of higher doses on true vitamin B3 (nicotinic acid) will detoxify the body of residual drugs in the body and greatly help to reduce drug cravings. The herb milk thistle, will greatly aid in the detoxifying of the liver for those people who have alcohol dependency. Neither one of these natural methods (of many other natural methods) are used by the Florida government medical entities.
With regard to the 'Baker Act' it is widely known by many Florida residents that the Baker Act' ( or the Florida Mental Health Act of 1971 (Florida Statute 394.451-394.4789)) is heavily abused by the authorities. A 'Baker Act' can result from a minor domestic quarrel, or any police officer, social worker, school teacher, etc deeming that a person needs psychological treatment. This is where the psych profession receives many of it's patients (customers) whereupon copious amounts medications are then prescribed to those 'Baker Acted' to ensure that these patients develop dependencies on the psych drugs and thus become permanent customers. It's a Yankee-inspired pharmaceutical scam to line the pockets of drug-dealing psychiatrists. For the few patients that are 'Baker Acted' who actually have psychological problems there exists natural remedies that can cure these mental illnesses. One example is the use of the combination of true vitamin B3 (nicotinic acid) and vitamin C (which is actually a hormone). It was known since the 1940's through the pioneering work of Dr. Abram Hoffer that daily does on 3,000 mg of nicotinic acid (vitamin B3) combined with 3,000 mg of vitamin C will cure almost 90% of patients with schizophrenia or bi-polar disorder in less than 90 days. This highly effective natural schizophrenia and/or bi-polar disorder treatment has been proven to works with many double-blind studies done in the 1950's through today. Yet this natural treatment will not be used because it would adversely affect the bottom line (profitability) of Yankee carpetbagger medical people..
