Civil War 125th Anniv. Battle of Spotsylvania 1989 - Re-enacting Retro
Re-enacting Retro - A very well-produced 125th Anniversary Re-enactment film from 1989. This re-enactment was organized by the American Civil War Commemorative Committee (ACWCC) and held in central Virginia in May 1989. I attended back then and I remember that it was an excellent event.
We hope you enjoy. This is another in a series of postings on our YouTube channel of a cool New series of Old videos -- featured only on here -- taken from a personal collection of re-enacting films and videos from the 1980s that can't be found anywhere else, or else we've tried to find them for nostalgia's sake, but did our own digging and presenting the results of our treasure hunt here. Some are taken from VHS originals or DVD transfers from those VHS copies. Originals were in Standard Def or Videotaped off of TV when they first aired. Some shot professionally and others by individuals with portable home video cameras on their shoulders.
Some Classic Re-enacting videos are already searchable on YouTube, but we wanted to start a new series of some rarely or never before seen classics that either only aired once or where short lived and available only to a select few at the time. We hope you enjoy. These programs presented in this RE-ENACTING RETRO series are presented for the enjoyment of all and we don't claim them for ourselves.

Spotsylvania Police Department Encounter
This is an incident that occurred on 7/9/14 with the Fawn Lake Security (Snyder), Spotsylvania Police Department, Officer Boyd, Officer Hodges, & Another officer (didn't get his name). Watch the whole video there is notes throughout. Not sure if he had a valid claim for ID since I was not trespassing, I was an authorized guest.

My fellow Spotsylvania County Citizens and Neighbors,
Right now, in Virginia, and America, womanhood is literally being erased and the right to privacy for young girls has been abolished!
The transgender agenda, adopted by the School Board, has allowed men to push women out of athletics, changing rooms, and out of their bathrooms!
It's causing young children to be taught that biology is meaningless...
Young girls are being taught that womanhood no longer exists and that girls have any right to privacy whatsoever!
Take a listen to what happened at the Loudoun County School Board in Virginia:
Will this be a country without a right to privacy for young girls?
Now the 6th-grade girl who spoke before the school board and all my fellow young girls have to worry about Teenage boys having complete access to the girls' bathrooms and locker rooms!
Who would take away those rights?
Who will fix this? Who will restore girls' privacy rights? Well, I tell you...
It will take concerned parents and involved citizens to fight for what's right.
If this disturbing policy of abolishing the privacy of young girls is unacceptable to you, please contact your County School Board.
AND take one additional step. VOTE TUESDAY NOVEMBER 5th, 2019.

A brief part of the drive through Spotsylvania Courthouse Battlefield in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. This is my favorite battlefield. The Bloody Angle is my favorite part of this battlefield. It was a horrendous bloody battle but now it's very peaceful. Many people don't know that a huge number of Irish immigrants fought in the Civil War. Many fought here.

The Bloody Angle was the scene of one of the bloodiest days in the American Civil War with troops fighting hand to hand across a Confederate defensive line. The video focuses on the Bloody Angle with views from both the Confederate and Union lines. Upton's charge is also highlighted.

By May 12, the Confederates had established a long line of earthworks, which included a huge half-mile bulge in the Confederate line called the Muleshoe Salient. Basing his plan off of Upton's attack, Grant massed 20,000 men of the Second Corps opposite the tip of the Muleshoe. Lee noted the Federal movement, but mistakenly believing Grant that was preparing to withdraw, removed his artillery from the salient. Thus, when Hancock's men advanced on the morning of May 12, they broke through the Confederate line that was without artillery. After the initial breakthrough, however, Lee shifted reinforcements into the salient just as Grant hurled more troops at the Confederate works. Fighting devolved into a point-blank slugfest—amid a torrential downpour—which lasted for 22 hours and claimed roughly 17,000 lives.

George Boxley & Enslaved Afrikans allegedly tried to coordinate a local slave rebellion on March 6, 1815, while living in Spotsylvania, Virginia. Boxley plan was based on orders to free the slaves. He tried to recruit slaves from Orange, Spotsylvania, and Louisa counties to meet at his home with horses, guns, swords and clubs. He planned to attack and take over Fredericksburg and Richmond, Virginia. Lucy, a local slave, informed her owner, and the plot was foiled. Boxley turned himself in on February 27, 1816, and was charged with fomenting an insurrection.
At least twenty-seven slaves were arrested and charged with complicity in Boxley’s alleged uprising. In the largest prosecution for insurrection in Virginia between the discovery of Gabriel’s Conspiracy in 1800 and Nat Turner’s Rebellion in 1831, five slaves were executed, and six others were sentenced to be transported out of Virginia. Boxley was ordered tried for capital felony and stealing two slaves, but while he was awaiting trial his wife smuggled him a file with which he sawed his way out of the Spotsylvania County jail and escaped.

On May 7, Grant issued orders for the Army of the Potomac to march toward Spotsylvania Court House, a small town along the route to Richmond. He hoped to get between Robert E. Lee’s army and Richmond or, at the very least, to draw the Confederates into the open field where he could take advantage of superior Union numbers. It was Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart’s job to prevent the Federals from reaching Spotsylvania. For two days, a division of Stuart’s cavalry, led by Fitz Lee, had battled Union horsemen for control of the Brock Road, the most direct route between the Wilderness Battlefield and Spotsylvania Court House. Forced to relinquish his position near Todd’s Tavern, Lee withdrew here to Laurel Hill on May 8. Laurel Hill was the last defensible position this side of Spotsylvania. If the Confederates lost Laurel Hill, they would also lose Spotsylvania.
Union General Gouverneur Warren, meanwhile, brimmed with optimism. Unaware of Anderson’s proximity, he believed Spotsylvania to be within his grasp. “The opposition to us amounts to nothing as yet,” he wrote Meade at 8 a.m. “We are advancing steadily.” When he saw Stuart’s cavalrymen making a stand at Laurel Hill, Warren ordered General John Robinson to brush aside the horsemen and capture the town.
Robinson’s division advanced across this field only to be met by a sheet of flame. After a night of hard marching, Anderson’s infantry had beaten Robinson’s men to the crest by a matter of seconds. As additional Union troops arrived at the front, Warren sent them in. “Never mind cannon. Never mind bullets,” he shouted. “Press on and clear this road.” But by now additional Confederates too had reached the field, and they beat back each of Warren’s assaults. The Confederates had won the race to Spotsylvania.
