Reaching Mysore Zoo
Tourists will not find any problem in reaching Mysore zoo because of its ideal location. It is only 3 km from Mysore bus stand and just 2 km from the Mysore Palace. There are many city buses which run to Mysore zoo. Apart from that visitors can take an auto-rickshaw as well. There are also horse carts running from Mysore Palace to Mysore zoo offering a completely new experience of commuting.
Mysore Zoo plays an active role as it is involved in the captive breeding programme for the endangered species and also in other conservation activities. Mysore Zoo acts as an ‘orphanage’ to rear abandoned animals like young apes, calves of elephants and gaur, and cubs of tigers and leopards.
Mysore Zoo is also notable for the breeding of many exotic species like Zebra, Barberry Sheep, Emu, Giraffe, Kangaroo, Chimpanzee, Hippo, Great Indian, One-Horned Rhino, Sangai, Tiger, etc. Endangered species like Four Horned Antelope, Mouse Deer, Civet, Caracal, Chinkara, Nilgiri Langur, Ring Tailed Lumur, Binturong, Leopard, etc. are also reared and bred in Mysore Zoo.
Mysore Zoo consists of spacious enclosures, pathways and a veterinary hospital with all modern facilities for animal care. It also encloses Karanji Tank which has been converted to a mini sanctuary for avian species.

The Mysore Zoological Garden in India is one of the worthiest among others. It was established by the then Maharaja of Mysore Chamaraja Wodeyar in the year 1892.
After India became independent, the state government took over the charge of this garden. Great care was taken in planning of this construction. The principal objective was to ensure Suitable ambience for the wild guests in captivity. This garden is situated close to the Mysore Palace and encompasses about157acres of land. It is the most ancient and famed zoological garden in India.

Mysore Zoo (Now Mysuru Zoo) (officially the Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens) is a 157-acre (64 ha) zoo located near the palace in Mysore, India. It is one of the oldest and most popular zoos in India, and is home to a wide range of species (168). Mysore Zoo is one of the city’s most popular attractions.
Mysore Zoo was created in 1892 on 10 acres (4.0 ha) of the summer palace of Maharaja Sri Chamaraja Wodeyar, and was originally called the Palace Zoo. The zoo was originally set up by G.H. Krumbiegel, a German landscaper and horticulturist. Over the next 10 years the zoo was expanded to 45 acres (18 ha) with spacious enclosures that are still in use.
The zoo was opened to the public in 1902, and now includes a bandstand and an artificial lake. It was given to the Department of Parks and Gardens of the Mysore State Government in 1948. The zoo was expanded first with another 50 acres (20 ha), and then another 150 acres (61 ha) with the acquisition of the Karanji Tank (Karanji reservoir), in which an artificial island has been created as a sanctuary for birds.
The zoo is currently home to ten elephants, and has more elephants than any other zoo in India. A total of 34 elephants have lived at this zoo, many of which were eventually transferred to other zoos. The zoo also has five green anacondas, contributed by Colombo Zoo. It also has giraffes, zebras, lions, tigers, white rhinoceroses, and baboons.

The zoo is open on all days of the week. It is closed on Tuesday. Mysore zoo timings are 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM. However, if you like bird watching then the best time to visit in morning as birds are said to be more active during early hours of the day. During summer season, most of the animals and birds stay hidden due to heat, hence it is advisable to visit either before 10.30 AM or after 3 PM in summers.
