Once known as 'Ratna-Dweepa' which means Gem Island, Sri Lanka is famous for its gems and is said to have the best sapphires, topazes, amethysts, and other precious stones in the world. The island is abundant with jewellery and gem shops, but we decided to visit a local artisan family, to learn more about the crafting process, and have a go at making our own jewellery.

It is a Thursday afternoon in a part of Pettah devoted to jewellery. Some of the richest gem merchants (most of them follow Islamic instructions) in town trade here in sometimes lavish premises. There is a general election approaching and these Followers of the Prophet might suffer if the Rajapaksa family come to power again. They are allied with the feared Bodu Bala Sena which is a militant Theravada Buddhist movement full of Sinhalese nationalists. The atmosphere is tense.

이 사파이어의 소유주는 사파이어 구매가는 극비라며 경매에 붙일 경우 최고 1억7500만 달러, 우리 돈 2천억 원이 넘을 것으로 기대하고 있습니다.
