Sri Lanka Navy yesterday, (06 June) launched a passenger ship (A 543) targeting local and foreign tourists who are interested in whale watching in the Eastern coast operating from Trincomalee harbor.
The ship can accommodate 100 passengers for three hour and six hour journeys in the sea.
Hotline +94 777 323050 is open for the public to contact the tour organizers, Sri Lanka Navy says.
The ship has been operated from Galle harbor in the Southern sea earlier this year during the North-East monsoon being the whale watching season. With the change of monsoon, the whale watching begins in the Eastern seas from May and continues till September.
Whale enthusiasts now can enjoy whale watching onboard Navy's passenger vessel A 543 in the scenic blue waters off Trincomalee, Navy says.
Trincomalee is a well acclaimed tourist destination for its clear blue seas. The other coastal areas where whales are seen in Sri Lanka are Kalpitiya in the northwest and Aluthgama, Ambalangoda, and Hikkaduwa in the South. Between December and April months the seas south of Dondra Head and Mirissa are known for Blue and Sperm whales sightings close to shore.

Mirissa situated in the southern coast of Sri Lanka is the closest point to the continental shelf and on the migratory route of Whales as they move closer to the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, primarily to breed.
Come watch, study and photograph the largest creatures on earth, the Whales at Dondra Point in Mirissa, a destination famed for some of the finest Whale and Dolphin sightings in the world.

You can also meet pods of friendly Dolphins such as the Common dolphins, Bottlenose dolphins, Spinner dolphins, Risso’s dolphins and striped dolphins as they playfully somersault and dance on the ocean waves. There’s also a good chance of seeing flying fish, turtle, manta rays and even sharks.
The best time to Whale watch is between November and April each year. Take back beautiful memories of the gentle giants of the ocean; it’s a once-in-lifetime experience!
Come watch the whales with professionals at sea
The Sri Lanka Navy's passenger craft Princess of Lanka set sail on a new journey at the launching of whale watching project venture since 30 January 2011 at port of Galle. The Princess of Lanka passenger vessel played a pivotal role in ferrying thousands of security forces personnel, civilians and goods between Trincomalee, Kankesanthurai ports and Thalai Mannar till the main land supply routes were cleared and restored after the dawn of peace.
The passenger craft Princess of Lanka utilized for whale watching/sea cruises under the auspices of Jet liner nautical enterprise will chart the waters as a recreational cruise ship whilst witnessing the beauty of Sri Lankan territorial waters in Indian ocean where passengers will have a rare opportunity of close encounter with the largest living mammals and spinning dolphins with luxury and comfort. The ship is redressed and equipped to cater to the needs of the new clientele and is manned by a well disciplined and highly trained professional naval crew who are in par with the best in the hospitality industry. The cruises are scheduled to operate from Galle and Trincomalee during the period of month of November to April and month of May to October respectively.
The whale watching season in Kalpitiya and Mirissa is in full swing by January every year with whales and dolphins parading their presence in the Sothern and North-Western oceans of Sri Lanka.
In the oceans around Kalpitiya sperm whales, Blue Whales, pigmy sperm whales and pilot whales gather in large pods of fifty to hundred members, some in water as shallow as 30 meters, with large concentration gathering around Dutch reef. The whales are accompanied by large pods of Spinner Dolphins who could be found within a just one hour boat ride from Kalpitiya harbour. Other than the most common, the spinner dolphins, other species including Risso’s Dolphin, Bottlenose Dolphin and Striped Dolphin too makes appearance although not as frequently or in such large numbers.
Meanwhile Blue whales, Bryde´s whales, Sperm whales, Fin whales, bottle nose dolphins, common dolphins and spinner dolphins grace the waters of Southern Seas of Sri Lanka from Weligama to Mirissa and can be found within just eight to ten nautical miles from Mirissa harbor.
Mirissa is an ideal destination for those who wish to catch a rare glimpse of those beautiful and gentle giants of the Cetacean Order. Situated at the southern coast of Sri Lanka from beyond Mirissa coast lies the Indian Ocean its vast majesty right up to the Antarctic land mass. It comes as no surprise that these amazing marine mammals migrate through the vast and fertile stretch from December to April during the annual breeding season. Mirissa itself is a quiet and peaceful coastal town boasting unspoiled beaches.

Dolphin Watching - Kalpitiya Sri Lanka
Kalpitiya- Sri Lanka is one of the best place to watch and play with dolphins. Very clean beach and water gives a clear sight of all the activities. We could locate them just 8-10km off the shore. They were heading to deep see when we locate them. They swim very fast. Don't forget to feed them with fresh fish to see them dancing. This video was taken on 27th march 2010 off the kalpitiya at about 10.00 a.m.

Sri Lankan Navy inaugurates whale watching
Sri Lankan Navy inaugurates whale watching. On Monday, January 31, the nation's Navy announced the launch of a whale watching program where visitors aboard the Navy's passenger vessels can enjoy whale tours. The idea was initiated by Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, who said that Sri Lanka is privileged to have such resources that are not available to other countries. A naval vessel is initially scheduled to sail four times a week at affordable rates for both foreign and Sri Lankan visitors.
A big hats off, Sri Lankan Navy for this caring use of military resources to better understand and appreciate our marine animal friends. May many visitors be graced with the presence of the magnificent whales to foster ever expanding respect for these and all such beings bestowed by the Divine.
