The church was founded as a monastery in the 7th century, and contains the largest collection, and some of the finest examples, of Anglo-Saxon sculptures. It also contains a notable family pew and Renaissance-era church monuments to the Shirley family, who bought the manor of Breedon after it was surrendered to the Crown in 1539 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The largest of these monuments is for Sir George Shirley. It was made over 20 years before his death and includes a life-sized skeleton carved in alabaster. The church stands on the top of Breedon Hill, within the remains of an Iron Age hill fort called The Bulwarks. The hill is flanked to the south by the 400 houses of Breedon on the Hill village, and encroached on the east by Breedon Quarry. Breedon church is a nationally important building, with a Grade I listing for its exceptional architectural interest.

St. Mary & St. Hardulph Church
There has been a place of worship in Breedon since about 676AD. Although the original priory buildings are long gone the renowned Anglo-Saxon carvings have been incorporated into the 'new' building which was built around the 12th century with other parts of the church added over the following couple of centuries.
The pews date from around 1850 and the East Window was made around 1900.
The present building is 'Grade 1 Listed' so all repairs etc are carefully monitored and have to be approved.
Quinquennial
Every 5 years all churches are subjected to a thorough survey by an Architect who examines the structure, monuments, belfry, graveyard etc and produces a report outlining what condition the church is in and what remedial work needs to be carried out over the next 5 years. The report estimates the cost of each repair and the urgency of the work.
Last year we had our quinquennial and alas it was not all good news!
Whilst the building appears fine on the outside and also in the public areas, closer inspection reveals remedial work is required especially in the tower...don’t worry it isn’t going to collapse yet so you are safe for the time being.
What work needs to be done?
Over the centuries the sandstone in various locations has eroded away and some of the timber in the tower is showing signs of age and needs attention.
Unfortunately, we can’t just fill the holes with rubble and cement as they did in the past, the stonework will require the attention of specialist stonemasons.
The total cost of repairs are estimated to be in the region of £130,000.
So what are we doing about it?
Well, we do have some funds available but not enough to cover the cost of all the repairs.
As the building and contents are historically important we are seeking to raise funds through the Heritage Lottery Fund, Crowdfunding and other fund raising avenues as well as some fund raising events.

Haunted Graveyards : The Grim Reaper of Breedon on the Hill
A site survey of the Haunted Graveyard. Dedicated to Saint Mary & Saint Hardulph, Breedon on the Hill church is one of the oldest centres for christian worship in the United Kingdom. It is located in Breedon on the Hill, Leicestershire, England. Built upon a site which was previously an Iron Age Hill Fort, the Saxon church and priory was founded in 676 AD.
The church is home to one of the oldest Hauntings in the country - Haunted by The Grim Reaper himself. A large spectral figure has been seen several times over the centuries, dressed in long grey ragged robes, wandering amongst the Gravestones, carrying a large scythe over his shoulder. A portent of death, anyone who is said to view this Spectre will experience a death, either themselves or somebody they know. So far in the 21st Century, The Grim Reaper has yet to make an appearance.

London Surprise Minor at Breedon-on-the-Hill
London is an odd method. Most of it is backwards hunting (which means each blow is on the opposite stroke (hand or back) to normal plain hunting), coupled with places (alternate 3rds and 4ths) and other bits of work with strange names like fishtails, which happen when the treble is in 3/4.
Breedon-on-the-Hill is an unusual church. It is on the top of a large hill, with the village itself at the bottom. Its also very windy up there, so it is known as Breezy Breedon (The imagination of ringers is astounding...). The only road access to the top of the hill is a steep, narrow and winding path, upon which you really don't want to meet someone coming the other way! The bells themselves are quite nice, and go fairly well. They are very quiet inside, and rather loud outside!
Filmed on the NUSCR Fresher's Tour, and I have one more video to come from that day.
St Mary's Church Henham and original medieval moat!
This parish church in an Essex village is a wonderful example and to the west sits the land where once stood a medieval Manor House and there's still part of the original moat surviving for nearly a thousand years!

Anchor Church - Ingleby Derbyshire By DJI MavicPro2
Anchor Church is the name given to a series of caves in a Keuper Sandstone, The cave is located close to the village of Ingleby, Derbyshire, England. The caves have been extended by human intervention to form a crude dwelling place, complete with door and window holes.
The name Anchor Church is derived from the term anchorite to withdraw or to depart into the countryside) because it is thought to have been the cell of an Anchorite hermit, St Hardulph, who lived and prayed here in the 6th and 7th century. The nearby church at Breedon on the Hill is dedicated to this saint.

History & Haunting of St Mary's parish church ,Hinckley
Hinckley is a market town in southwest Leicestershire, England.
St Mary's parish church in Hinckley was dedicated in the Middle Ages to the Assumption of Saint Mary the Virgin. This church building has stood on the site for almost nine hundred years, although there may well have been a church already on the site, as the remnants of an Anglo Saxon sun-dial is visible on the diagonal buttress on the south-east corner of the chancel. The church was built by William FitzOsbern, who came over with William the Conqueror.
According to local tradition, the gravestone of Richard Smith is said to 'sweat blood' on the anniversary of his murder.
St Mary's Church of Hinckley in Leicestershire is the last resting place of Richard Smith who was killed on 12th April 1727, aged 20 years old. Simeon Stayne was a recruiting Sergeant for the Army, he had come to Hinckley and stood outside the 'Pig and Whistle' along Regent Street, informing a crowd of potential new soldiers about the virtues of taking the King's shilling. When the Sergeant suggested that the George Inn (now the Bounty) was named after King George II, Richard started to heckle him and said that the George Inn was actually named the George and Dragon.
Richard would not stop with his comments, the Sergeant lost his temper and gave the crowd a demonstration in how to use a halberd in close quarter combat, it was at this point he struck Richard with the weapon and then left him lying on the floor in blood. Later on, Richard died of the wounds that the Sergeant had inflicted upon him; the Sergeant had now fled Hinckley.
Richard was buried near the Church wall of St Mary's Church during April 1727. Simeon Stayne was later arrested and sent to Leicester Assizes, which is where he received the sentence of death for murdering Richard Smith.
Upon Richard's gravestone is the following inscription:
A fatal Halbert his mortal Body slew
The murdering Hand God's vengeance will pursue
From shades Terrestrial, though Justice took her flight
Shall not the judge of all the Earth do right
Each Age and Sex his Innocence bemoans
And with sad sighs laments his dying Groans
The church itself is said to be home to phantom footsteps, believed to belong to a monk.
A Halberd (also called Halbard or Halbert) is a two-handed wooden pole with a combined spear point, axe and hook at one end. The Halberd had become a symbol of rank, it was carried by recruiting Sergeants of the British Army during the 18th Century. It was known that the Sergeants used the halberd to ensure that infantrymen drawn up in ranks stood correctly aligned with each other.

The weather vane, 184 feet up on St Mary's church tower at Hinkley is a fine cockerel which dates back some 200 years. In 1993 a headline appeared in the local paper entitled “Sorry Cock”. At the time the church steeple was being renovated and somebody took advantage of scaffolding to steal the said weather vane. The vicar appealed for its return in the press and early one morning he found the weather vane on his doorstep and it had been newly painted. There was also a note of apology telling that it was all the result of a drunken prank.
Hinckley has a history going back to Anglo-Saxon times; the name Hinckley is Anglo Saxon: Hinck is someone's name and ley is a meadow. By the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, Hinckley was quite a large village, and grew over the following 200 years into a small market town—a market was first recorded there in 1311. There is evidence of an Anglo Saxon church – the remnants of an Anglo Saxon sun-dial being visible on the diagonal buttress on the south-east corner of the chancel.
In 2000, archaeologists from Northampton Archaeology discovered evidence of Iron Age and Romano-British settlement on land near Coventry Road and Watling Street.
