St John's Church (Jaani Kirik) - Tartu, Estonia
Before you think, I'm not going to watch a video about a church, St. John's Church was built in the 14th century and is Tartu's oldest surviving church. The church was quiet when we first walked in and then the organist began tuning up before beginning a virtuoso and dramatic performance of music that echoed around the church.
We sat mesmerized, looking at the 14th century oils from the gospel and terra cotta statues, both inside and out. A person couldn't have asked for a more spine tingling experience and St. John's will be my favorite memory of Tartu.

Claudio Monteverdi -- Maarja vesper
Vespro della Beata Vergine (1610)
Kas üks heliteos saab muuta muusikalugu? Monteverdi Maarja-vespri (1610) kohta pole seda liialdus öelda: virtuoosne, efektne ja tundeline kontserttsükkel solistidele, suurele koorile ja värvikale pillikoosseisule murdis kirikumuusika konservatiivsuse ja avas tee barokiliku väljenduse küllusele. This is one of a series of reports I produced nearly a decade ago for WTN Roving Report and kept a copy for posterity . They have been uploaded to this site so that the people who took part who never got a chance to see them can now view them.
As a freelance cameraman/director I researched and produced this report for WTN's Roving Report.
Filmed five years after Estonia's' independence from Russia it examines the problems faced by the Russian Orthodoc Church and ethnic Russians in Estonia.

Inside Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Tallinn, Estonia
The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is an orthodox cathedral in the Tallinn Old Town, Estonia. It was built to a design by Mikhail Preobrazhensky in a typical Russian Revival style between 1894 and 1900, during the period when the country was part of the Russian Empire. The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is Tallinn's largest and grandest orthodox cupola cathedral. It is dedicated to Saint Alexander Nevsky who in 1242 won the Battle of the Ice on Lake Peipus, in the territorial waters of present-day Estonia. The late Russian patriarch, Alexis II, started his priestly ministry in the church.
