7/13/14: Rally participants present San Bernardino, CA Archdiocese Communications Director John Andrews with a letter in opposition to the housing of Texas border crossers from Central America at St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
On July 10, 2014, St. Joseph's Catholic Church, of the San Bernardino Archdiocese, housed 46 Central American border crossers who entered the USA via Texas and had been processed and then bused to the church from the Chula Vista, CA Border Patrol Station. In reaction to the Murrieta, CA Border Patrol Station protests, the San Bernardino Diocese, which includes Fontana, announced they would house the displaced migrants.

TEXT FROM THE HOMILY
Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. We often forget that Jesus was placed by God, his father, in the care and protection of Mary and Joseph. Often, when I'm confirming a young man, he'll come before me taking the name St. Joseph, the foster father of Jesus. I reflect with him on the integrity of that man Joseph. Just imagine, God knew every soul, every being on earth and he chooses this man Joseph to care and protect his son and Mary. in the gospel today we see joseph fulfilling his mandate to care and protect Jesus and Mary. He listens to the directions of the angel. “Rise! Take the child and his mother and flee.” And he fled, avoiding the intended destruction by Herod. This action by Joseph gives to us the primary responsibility of every family and that is to listen to God. In our age, when we experience the attempted destruction of the family, I offer to you that it begins with our failure to listen to God. As St. Paul states, whatever you do in word or in deed, do everything in the name of our Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the father through him. There's an old adage, the family that prays together stays together. This statement has its foundation in an abiding trust in the Lord. Prayer honors all our familial relationships as given to us from God. As we read in Sirach, God sets father in honor over his children and a mother's authority he confirms over her sons. Pope Pius IX was seeking the protector of the universal church. And if God saw fit to entrust Jesus and Mary into the hands of Joseph, what better person to entrust the care and protection of the family of the church, than Joseph? Therefore in 1870, Pius declared Joseph our universal patron, and patron of the domestic church. The family. I believe that this focuses our attention on the church as family, an understanding that we are family, it impresses upon us that we have a responsibility for our brothers and sisters. Pope Francis states the importance of family in these words. But what is the power that unites the family? It is indeed love and the one who sows love in our hearts is God, God's love. It is precisely God's love that gives meaning to our small daily tasks and helps us to face the great trials. This is the true treasure of humankind. Going forward in life with love. With that love which the Lord has sown into our hearts with God's love. This is the true treasure. This is family. St. Joseph on this Feast of the Holy Family, help us, to love one another and as a family to listen to God and have the courage to follow his plan.

Joseph (Hebrew יוֹסֵף, Yosef; Greek: Ἰωσήφ, Ioseph) is a figure in the Gospels, the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus and is venerated Saint Joseph in some Christian traditions. Christian tradition places Joseph as Jesus' foster father.[1] Some historians state that Joseph was Jesus's father.[2][3][4] Some differing views are due to theological interpretations versus historical views.[2]
The Pauline epistles make no reference to Jesus's father; nor does the Gospel of Mark.[5] The first appearance of Joseph is in the gospels of Matthew and Luke. Each contains a genealogy of Jesus showing ancestry from king David, but through different sons; Matthew follows the major royal line from Solomon, while Luke traces another line back to Nathan, another son of David and Bathsheba. Consequently, all the names between David and Joseph are different. According to Matthew 1:16 Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, while according to Luke 3:23, Joseph is said to be [the son] of Heli. Some scholars reconcile the genealogies by viewing the Solomonic lineage in Matthew as Joseph's major royal line, and the Nathanic lineage in Luke to be Mary's minor line.[6][7]
Joseph is venerated as a saint in the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Anglican, Lutheran[8][9] and Methodist[10][11] faiths. In Catholic and other traditions, Joseph is the patron saint of workers and has several feast days. He was also declared to be the patron saint and protector of the Catholic Church by Pope Pius IX in 1870, and is the patron of several countries and regions. With the growth of Mariology, the theological field of Josephology has also grown and since the 1950s centres for studying it have been formed

Sermon from Ascension Thursday : May 13, 2010

Fr. Daniel Cooper, who reposed in the Lord on May 1, 2018 (Feast of St. Joseph the Worker), was laid to rest on Tuesday, May 8 at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Dickinson, TX.
Prior to succumbing to cancer, Fr. Cooper faithfully served the U.S. District for many years. A man regarded for his kindness and dedication to the priesthood, it should come as little surprise that Fr. Cooper fought his cancer with patience, acceptance, and a joyful spirit.
A Solemn Day
Prior to Tuesday’s funeral Mass at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Dickinson, a public Rosary was held for Fr. Cooper’s soul with the faithful filling the building. The Rosary was followed by all-night prayers.
When the time came to serve the solemn Requiem Mass for Fr. Cooper, over 20 priests were present in addition to the larger gathering of laity, all of whom could not fit into the church building. U.S. District Superior, Fr. Wegner, served the Mass with Fr. Kurtz acting as deacon and Fr. Haenny as subdeacon. Some of the priests in attendance sang in the schola while the rest joined the faithful in assisting at Mass and asking Our Lord to quickly usher Fr. Cooper’s soul to Heaven.
The choice to be buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery was Fr. Cooper’s. Due to his many years of priestly service in Dickinson, he requested to be buried near the parish where he regularly said Mass, heard innumerable confessions, and served other sacraments according to the traditional Roman Rite for the salvation of souls.
Reflecting on the Life of Fr. Cooper
In his sermon that day, Fr. Wegner called attention to the fact that Fr. Cooper has been ordained, worked, suffered, and reposed all within the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX). He had served the SSPX as a priest for 31 years. While at the time of his ordination, many held to the hope that the crisis in the Church would be over after a few years, it is now clear that crisis is bigger than the lives of the Society’s priests. How long will the crisis last? And, just as important, will the SSPX continue to have the spiritual and physical resources to combat it?
The SSPX, as Fr. Wegner went on to note, is no longer a “young fraternity.” In the half-a-century since its inception, the Society has experienced setbacks, buried its members, realized its limitations, but ultimately matured. A new generation of young, vibrant priests are now filling the SSPX’s ranks, though they are dependent on the example of veteran clergy like Fr. Cooper whose years of service brought with it invaluable lessons. It is to be hoped that once the older generation of Society priests has gone to their final reward, the next “wave” of Society clergy will have the tools to carry on the holy work started decades ago by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre.
In concluding his sermon, Fr. Wegner spoke of the need for the SSPX’s priests like Fr. Cooper. That is, the Society needs priests who love the priesthood itself and are faithful to their vocation while always remaining humble and meek. It is priests made in the mold of Fr. Cooper who will keep the SSPX healthy and vibrant in the coming decades, and, in God’s good time, see the faithful through the ongoing crisis in the Church.
In Conclusion
Following the funeral, burial, and reception, Fr. Cooper’s brother thanked Fr. Kurtz for the beautiful ceremony and for the care given to Fr. Cooper by the faithful in Dickinson. The clergy in attendance then made their way back to their priories, no doubt edified by the outpouring of love and prayer for Fr. Cooper they had just witnessed. And the faithful themselves, who also came from all over the United States to pray their respects, can now carry with them a solemn memory of just how important our priests are for the future of the Catholic Church and the cessation of the crisis.

St. Joseph's in Rhineland
St. Joseph's is a site to behold, and within the sanctity of that site, is a peace within one's soul. This is the small German Catholic church I was baptized in and the same place my final farewell will take place. I have spent many hours on my knees during Mass service at this small cathedral in a cotton patch in the West Texas town of Rhineland. We all have our places and times in which God feels closer. For me, it is always in St. Joseph's at Rhineland, TX, USA. Thus, I love St. Joseph's, I love Rhineland, and I love God!
