St Martins Scilly Isles Cornwall August 2016
St Martin's (Cornish: Brechiek, meaning dappled island) is the northernmost populated island of the Isles of Scilly, England. It has an area of 237 hectares (0.92 sq mi).
There are three main settlements on the island - Higher Town, Middle Town and Lower Town - in addition to a number of scattered farms and cottages, with a total population (2011 census) of 136.
There are two quays - at Higher Town (the Higher Town Quay, used at high tide) and at Lower Town (the Hotel Quay, used at low tide). In Higher Town there is a post office.
There is a vineyard on the island.
To the north, St Martin's is joined by a tidal causeway to White Island.
Daymark
At the northeast corner of the island is a large red-and-white daymark. It was erected in 1683 by Thomas Ekins, first steward of the Godophin Family to live on the islands.
It is a rendered granite circular tower 4.8 metres (16 ft) in diameter and 6.4 metres (21 ft) high, set back to conical termination making it 11 metres (36 ft) high. The blocked arched entrance door contains an incorrect date of 1637. It was painted white until 1822 but by 1833 had been painted red, and is now painted in bands of red and white.
Despite its modernity, the daymark, alongside some prehistoric cairns, is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The daymark is built on the highest point of St Martin's — and the second-highest point in the Isles of Scilly — and the islands' only Ordnance Survey triangulation station is situated by the daymark; the position and relative height mean that the Cornish mainland is clearly visible (when the weather allows) and the daymark is identifiable from the mainland too.

More discoveries on Britain's treasure islands
In the second part of Britain’s Own Treasure Islands John Boyle turns his attention to the smaller inhabited Scilly Isles. Starting with St. Agnes, joined to Gugh by a sandbar at low tide you get a real taste of the views and the pace of life that makes the islands so attractive. A walk around the coastline of St. Agnes takes around one hour and if you are taking the local boat to one of the other islands chances are you will await the boat’s arrival at The Turk’s Head pub at the top of the slipway.
St. Martin’s, the other side of St. Mary’s has the attraction of secluded, empty sandy bays. Plus, (for such a small island) its own bakery and vineyard.
Bryher the smallest of the inhabited islands, also features the highest point on any of the islands at its northern end, 140ft above sea level. Most of Bryher’s 90+ inhabitants live in the south of the island.
We end with a close up look at the seals that inhabit the islands and a trip to the famous Bishop Rock lighthouse, the most westerly point of the archipelago.

Dorking is a market town in Surrey, England between Ranmore Common in the North Downs range of hills and Leith Hill in the Greensand Ridge, centred 21 miles from London. In the Georgian and Victorian periods six prominent sites in the former parish or on its boundaries became grand country estates: Leith Hill Place, Denbies (today a vineyard/hotel), Norbury Park, Polesden Lacey, Wotton House and Deepdene; five of which along with nearby Box Hill's promontory and chalk grassland slopes belong to the National Trust.
Dorking is a commuter and retirement settlement with three railway stations and a few large offices of multinational companies. Similarly, Malden in 1911, noted the place was almost entirely residential and agricultural, with some lime works on the chalk, though not so extensive as those in neighbouring parishes, a little brick-making, water-mills (corn) at Pixham Mill, and timber and saw-mills. Fine sand often in veins of pink, used for mortar and in glassmaking was dug, particularly in the 19th century — the Dorking Caves were accordingly excavated under southern parts of the town centre itself.
Dorking chickens with short five-toed legs are a major breed. The town has a local government headquarters and hosts repeating loops of the FIA-ranked London-Surrey cycle classic elite category event every year.
Dorking is in the west of the area between hill ranges in southern England known as Holmesdale which has headwaters of several rivers. The town's geography is undulating; for example, the elevation of the southern point of the central one-way system is 76 metres and on its northern side the elevation is 59–60 metres. To the south west of the town is Leith Hill, also owned by the National Trust, the second highest point in the south east of England after Walbury Hill. The tower on the summit elevates the hill to 1,000 ft (300 m) above sea level. The area is towards the east of the Surrey Hills AONB surrounded by the Greensand Ridge, including Holmbury Hill and Pitch Hill, as well as the nearby escarpment of the North Downs from Box Hill to Newlands Corner.
Dorking three main trading streets of High Street, West Street and South Street are complemented by a small open-air shopping centre, St Martin's Walk, which is adjacent to the town's main car park and easily accessed from the High Street. In the late 1990s Dorking Halls was given a huge refit, to make it a cinema and theatre complex. In 2003 a new modern leisure centre and swimming pool were added to the Dorking Halls Complex. There is a thin, somewhat shiny metal statue of a Dorking cockerel on the Deepdene roundabout.
Dorking and nearby Box Hill were chosen as part of the route for the 2012 London Olympics cycling road race and have featured in the FIA-ranked London-Surrey cycle classic every year since. The Deepdene Trail, a heritage walking trail, opens in September 2016 offering walks for all levels of fitness in a quiet space just 15 minutes from Dorking High Street.
Dorking is at the junction of the A24 (London to Worthing) and A25 (Maidstone to Guildford) roads. Dorking railway station, on the Epsom to Horsham Sutton & Mole Valley Line. This video is just a taster of Allans great guided walk / talk in the streets of Dorking. Though the weather was poor over 50 people turned up to participate.
A wonderful two hours wandering around Dorking with a great guide. Allan gave a great mix of the social history of Dorking and the neighbouring Surrey area.Whilst he now lives in Cambridge he was brought up in Dorking and family still lives there. Over 50 people followed him around either side of the Dorking High Street.
Starting outside the Almshouses in Cotmandene. He talked about the commons origin and that cricket was played there from 1700 with a great advantage to the local team, as there cannot be a more uneven cricket field in the country.
From there he advance via the Cubit statue to Pippbrook House.
Unfortunately Pippbrook cannot sadly be visited now. Built by Foreman the Suffolk MP! in the Victorian trendy Gothic style. Though he sadly died within 5 years of it being built.
We then visited Pippbrook watermill, one of six on the Pipp Brook in the 19th Century (Rookery Mill, Westcott Mill, Milton Court Mill, Parsonage Mill, Pipp Brook Mill and Pixham Mill). Pipp Brook Mill was working into the 20th century.AllanBrighamTalk360w
We then had a history of St Martins Church including the Flagstone of the Duke of Norfolk and the fact that the church was rebuild twice in the 19th century. Included was the claim that it was the second highest in England, which I need to check, as at University, St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol claimed to be the third highest at 292ft? So not sure its 210 feet wil be higher enough!
We finished the tour with a discussion about Rose Hill and how it became the Victorian image of what the upper classes had, including domestic animals grazing up to their doorstep. So the estate was build around a small park. Including semi-detached that mimicked the larger houses.
If you get the opportunity to take one of Allans talks and walks- take it.

St Martin's Courtyard - Food and Flowers Festival 2013

St Martin's Courtyard hosted the Food and Flowers Festival on Saturday 13 July 2013.
With temperatures hitting over 30 degrees in the capital, St Martin's Courtyard paid tribute to the floral heritage of Covent Garden with a festival celebrating food and flowers.
Between noon and 5pm, six international restaurants served unique, exclusively created dishes and drinks with a floral theme, al fresco in the courtyard.
Jamie's Italian spit roasted a whole lamb al fresco, accompanied by rose jelly, floral breads and floral infused cocktails. Suda Thai served 'Chor-muang', steamed Thai dumplings handcrafted into a flower shape, from a Bangkok style street food cart in the courtyard as well as cocktails garnished with flowers.
Cantina Laredo, the modern Mexican in Covent Garden brought the fiesta to St Martin's Courtyard. Their pop-up bar served 2,000 free Casa Ambar Hibiscus Margaritas. This fragrant floral concoction was made using home-made syrup infused with tropical hibiscus flower, boutique Casa Ambar Blanco 100% Blue Agave tequila, Cointreau and freshly squeezed lime. Cantina Laredo served a specially created Squash Blossom dish (also known as zucchini flower) stuffed with feta cheese and fresh herbs.
Italian enoteca Dalla Terra hosted floral notes wine tastings throughout the day which focused on how floral notes influence the palate, the popularity and food choice.
For something different, Melvita's Bee Products including honeys, royal jelly and pollen were available to sample and Dishoom's Bombay bar in the courtyard was serving rose and cardamom lassis and Bollybellinis made with rose syrup. Those with a sweet tooth indulged in floral cupcakes from Bill's market barrow and festivalgoers cooled down with free floral flavoured ice creams.
The courtyard was in full bloom dressed with a fabulous floral installation and The Covent Garden Academy of Flowers created a spectacular banquet table with a full spread made entirely from flowers. Visitors tried their hand at floral design, creating decorative cupcakes from flowers to take home.
Live music came courtesy of vintage singing duo Verity and Violet, as well as the Hackney Colliery Band, a nine-piece big brass band.
Covent Garden was traditionally the home of the Flower Market (made famous by Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady) and is now a renowned foodie destination.
St Martin's Courtyard is shopping and dining destination in the heart of Covent Garden, a must-visit for shopping, style and restaurants.
