St Augustine, Florida USA - Exploring America's Oldest City
Exploring the beautiful city St Augustine in Florida, USA.
St Augustine was founded in 1565 by Spanish explorers which makes it the oldest continuously inhabited settlement of continental United States.
St Augustine is easy to get to from Orlando and even though it’s only two hours away the relaxed atmosphere and its rich history is a million miles away from crowds and queues of the theme parks.
During our stay in St Augustine we stayed at the pretty water front Bayfront Marin House Inn which overlooks Matanzas Bay in the historic centre and is within easy walking distance of the city’s historic sites, museums, art galleries and restaurants.
Take the Red Train Trolley to get to know the layout of the historic city centre. You must visit the Castillo de San Marcos, the first masonry fort in the Americas, the Fountain of Youth, Flagler College (formerly Hotel Flagler's Ponce de Leon Hotel) and the St Augustine Lighthouse.
Here is the list of all the exciting places we visited in St Augustine on Florida’s Historic Coast

In 1513, Ponce de León became the first known European to explore the area of present-day St. Augustine, which was officially founded by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés(1519-1574) in 1565. During the Spanish period, St. Augustine served as a base for further colonial expansion. Over the next two centuries, the fort faced attacks not only by Native American tribes, but also by French forces and then British forces. Great Britain obtained the Florida Territory in 1763 with the signing of the Treaty of Paris, which ended the Seven Years' War. The Treaty of Paris of 1783, ending the American Revolutionary War, allowed Spain to regain control of East Florida. However, Spain ceded its holdings in Florida to the United States in 1819 with the signing of the Adams–Onís Treaty. During the Second Seminole War of 1835-1842, St. Augustine served as a prison for captives from the Seminole tribe.
Before Florida seceded from the United States and joined the Confederacy during the American Civil War, St. Augustine was taken over by the St. Augustine Blues, a local militia that was in favor of secession. However, the USS Wabash was able to reoccupy the city on March 11, 1862. St. Augustine remained under Union control for the remained of the war. In the 1880s, Henry Flagler (1830-1913) made St. Augustine the headquarters for the Florida East Coast Railway (FEC), allowing for further development of the area. During World War II, hotels in St. Augustine were used as training centers for the Coast Guard. St. Augustine was a major site for civil disobedience during the Civil Rights Movement. During the later half of the 20th century, the city became a popular tourist destination for visitors seeking to observe Spanish colonial-era architecture.

Walking Around St Augustine and Seeing A Pirate Magic Show
In today's video we were invited out to St. Augustine Florida to visit the Colonial Quarter and see Captain Mayhem's all new Pirate Magic Dinner Show. We started off in the Colonial Quarter learning all about the history of St. Augustine and how the fort was used to defend the land from invasion. We got to see a cannon being fired as well as a black powder musket! It was really neat to see how much history is in this area of Florida. After the Colonial Quarter we did a little exploring around the touristy section of the city before making our way to Captain Mayhem's dinner show! We found out that this is the only dinner show in St Augustine and the only form of family entertainment available after the sun goes down, aside from ghost tours that might not be for everyone in the family. All in all it was a very interesting and exciting experience. If you would like more information about Captain Mayhem's show visit his website at:
